Later price snapshots differ, and none establishes today’s price. The ball is a budget-oriented, two-piece model; limited early testing suggests it may trade some distance and short-game control for a lower replacement cost.
What is Amazon’s golf ball?
The Amazon Basics Soft Core, also referred to as Core Soft, is a two-piece golf ball with a low-compression core and an ionomer cover. Golf Monthly reported that it has 338 dimples, a side-alignment stamp, and white and yellow color options. Its launch-era coverage also reported that it conformed to USGA regulations; that is not a current verification of the product’s listing or conformity status. Golf Monthly’s product report describes the specifications.
Amazon’s product claim, as quoted by Golf Monthly, is “exceptional distance and straight flight path with soft feel on impact.” Golf Monthly also reported Amazon’s claim that its core and ionomer-cover technology enhances short-game spin. Those are manufacturer claims, not independently established outcomes. Multiple outlets identified SM Global as the manufacturer, though the reviewed sources do not verify that directly with Amazon.
How much did it cost—and is $12 the right figure?
The $12 figure in the headline is not the launch price established by the reviewed coverage. Forbes and Golf Monthly each reported $14.49 per dozen in 2025; Golf Monthly also reported a $24.16 price for a 24-pack. GeekWire later said it bought a dozen for $15.99 in November 2025. These are historical price snapshots, not current offers. MyGolfSpy mentioned $12 only conditionally, in the context of a golfer who was going to spend that amount per dozen—not as the ball’s reported list price.

What do the available comparisons show?
Distance and ball speed
GeekWire reported a small field comparison: two teaching professionals hit 10 shots with each of three clubs—driver, 7-iron, and wedge—using the Amazon ball, TaylorMade TP5x, and Titleist Pro V1. In that session, the premium balls produced higher ball speeds and more distance, particularly off the driver, with about 10 yards more average driver distance. This is the result of one limited comparison, not a general performance guarantee for every golfer, swing, or course condition. GeekWire’s comparison provides the test details.

Feel and short-game control
In the same GeekWire report, Evergreen Golf Club teaching professional Tyler Yee said the Amazon balls felt like hitting a “marshmallow” compared with the firmer-feeling TaylorMade and Titleist balls. Another instructor, Austin Nutt, said short-shot control would be harder. Forbes, summarizing an earlier test by YouTuber Mr. ShortGame, reported higher launch and peak height and lower spin than the Pro V1, with the tester characterizing it as a “low spin high launch golf ball.” These observations come from particular tests and should not be treated as a universal fitting result.
Durability
GeekWire observed no scuffing on the Amazon ball during its test session, while the premium comparison balls showed small marks. That brief observation does not establish long-term durability or how the ball will hold up over repeated rounds.

- Increased Ball Speed with Soft Feel. The HyperElastic SoftFast Core is engineered for faster driver and iron speed, with soft greenside feel.
- Exceptional Feel, Control and Spin with Long Distance. Supersoft’s Hybrid Cover combines maximized distance with soft feel and durability.
- Greenside Spin and Control. New cover system for enhanced control on approach shots and short game shots.
Who might find it worthwhile?
Coverage positions the Soft Core as a possible fit for beginners, higher-handicap golfers, recreational players, or anyone who frequently loses balls and puts a premium on replacement cost. MyGolfSpy described it as a low-cost practice or knockaround option; GeekWire suggested its appeal may be greatest for golfers less focused on maximizing distance or control around the green. Those are editorial assessments, not a substitute for choosing a ball based on your own play.
Before buying, weigh these factors:
- Cost per ball: Use the current listing and pack size, not launch-era prices.
- Construction: The Soft Core is reported as a two-piece ionomer ball. Compare construction and cover type rather than assuming that balls in different price tiers are equivalent.
- Distance and speed: The limited GeekWire test favored TP5x and Pro V1 on those measures, especially off the tee.
- Short-game feel and control: The test’s instructors raised concerns about feel and control near the green.
- Durability: One session without visible scuffing is not evidence of long-term durability.
How does it fit among alternatives?
The coverage names Kirkland Signature, Callaway Warbird, and TaylorMade Distance among value-oriented alternatives, alongside the premium TaylorMade TP5x and Titleist Pro V1. These are not all like-for-like competitors: price, construction, and intended performance differ. Compare the current per-ball price and the features you care about rather than treating the premium models as direct budget substitutes. GeekWire’s test compared the Amazon ball with TP5x and Pro V1; the other named balls were not part of that test.
