Pooling does not merge accounts or share Premier status, and the published rules do not answer every question about control of a pool or what happens when someone leaves it.
What United miles pooling does—and does not do
A MileagePlus pool is a shared balance built from miles contributed by members’ individual accounts. United introduced the feature in a March 21, 2024 announcement, describing it as a way for members to use miles together. Each person still has their own MileagePlus account; pooling is not an account merger.
United says contributed miles can be used for award flights on United and United Express, booked on United.com or in the United mobile app. Its announcement does not establish pooled-mile use for partner-operated flights or other travel products. United’s MileagePlus Travel FAQ says pooling is currently available only for flight purchases, not car rentals. Read United’s MileagePlus Travel FAQ.
Who can create a pool, and how many people can join?
According to United’s launch announcement, a member older than 18 can create a pool and invite up to four other people. Invitees may be family members, friends, or close travel companions, and may be any age if they have active MileagePlus accounts. United says there is no minimum age to join MileagePlus, and membership is free. The release does not explain parent or guardian enrollment steps for a child.

That means a pool can include up to five members in total: the leader and four invitees. The U.S. account-management terms were not available in the accessible United pooling page, so details such as whether a member can join multiple pools should be checked in the current U.S. terms or the member’s account rather than inferred from another region’s rules.
How members contribute miles
Members choose whether to contribute all or only some of the miles in their own accounts. United’s announcement says there is no limit to the amount that may be contributed to an active pool. The miles are then available as pooled miles for the feature’s stated eligible use: United and United Express award flights.

United identifies flights, spending on United co-branded cards issued by Chase, and MileagePlus Shopping as ways members earn miles before contributing them. These are individual-account earning routes; the pooling announcement does not establish current earning rates, card offers, or special family-linked discounts.
United’s launch announcement also says MileagePlus miles do not expire. That is the program-level policy stated in the March 2024 release; check current MileagePlus terms for any applicable conditions before relying on it.

How to decide whether pooling fits your family
| Question | Pooling | Keeping miles separate |
|---|---|---|
| What can the miles buy? | United says pooled miles can pay for United and United Express award flights through United.com or the app. | Individual miles remain in each member’s account. United separately describes MileagePlus Travel car-rental redemption; that is not pooling. |
| Can smaller balances work together? | Yes. Members can contribute some or all of their miles to a common balance, which may help when no single member has enough for an eligible award. | Each member relies on their own balance for an award booking. |
| Does status move with the miles? | No. Contributions do not transfer or pool Premier status or its qualification metrics. | Each member’s status and qualifying activity remain individual. |
| Who can control redemptions, and what happens when someone leaves? | Not stated in the accessible U.S. rules; confirm current terms in United’s account page. | Members retain individual accounts and balances, subject to MileagePlus terms. |
Pooling may be useful when the group values combining balances for a qualifying flight and is comfortable using a shared balance. Keeping miles separate preserves individual balances instead. Because accessible U.S. information does not resolve pool permissions, departure, closure, or the destination of remaining miles, review those terms before contributing a large balance.
Do family members share Premier status?
No. United says contributing miles does not affect the contributor’s Premier status. The traveler whose ticket is paid for with pooled miles earns any eligible Premier qualifying points for that travel. Premier qualifying points, Premier qualifying flights, PlusPoints, and TravelBank cash are not pooled.

Regional rules: what United’s Japan page adds
United’s Japan MileagePlus information page, marked current as of April 2026, says a member may belong to only one pool at a time, a newly added member must wait at least 72 hours before contributing, and contributions have no stated upper limit or transfer fee. It describes award travel redemption on United and United Express through united.com. Those are statements on a regional Japan page; they should not be treated as confirmed current U.S. rules without checking United’s U.S. terms. See United’s Japan miles-pooling information.

In its March 21, 2024 announcement, United attributed two figures to the Family Travel Association’s 2023 U.S. Family Travel Survey: 81% of parents reported intending to travel with their children in the next year, and nearly 60% said they were concerned about travel affordability. These are 2023 survey findings cited by United, not current 2026 results. Read United’s March 21, 2024 announcement.
