The paper is 13 pages. It is the English paper for the May/June 2025 SC/NSC examination, not a generic monopoly worksheet or a paper for a later exam session.
How the exam is structured
The paper has three sections. Section A is compulsory; in Section B, candidates choose two of three questions. Section C contains longer essay questions.
#1 Best Overall
| Section | What to answer | Marks | Time allocated |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Compulsory questions | 30 | 20 minutes |
| B | Any two of three questions | 40 marks per question | 30 minutes for the section |
| C | Longer essay questions | Not stated here; consult the official paper | Not stated here; consult the official paper |
The paper’s instructions allow a non-programmable pocket calculator. That permission does not mean every question requires one.
What topics does Paper 2 cover?
Monopoly is a significant part of the microeconomics material, but it is only one part of a broad paper. Section A samples concepts and applications including explicit costs, market structures, information and market adjustment, maximum prices and black markets, inflation, tourism, environmental subsidies, natural monopolies and market terminology. Longer questions include microeconomics, externalities and market failure, monopoly and oligopoly, inflation, environmental issues and tourism.
In Section A, for example, candidates are asked to identify monopolistic competition as the hybrid market structure and to recognize a maximum price as the intervention associated with a black market in the question’s context. The longer microeconomics questions address monopoly and oligopoly; other material covers contemporary economic issues.
What monopoly material should you review?
The paper and memo include a question about the relationship between a monopoly’s demand (average revenue, or AR) curve and its marginal revenue (MR) curve, as well as a monopoly graph question. The marking guidelines state that both curves slope downward from left to right.

For the graph, the memo awards marks for accurately labelling the axes, drawing and labelling the demand/AR and MR curves, and positioning them correctly. When practising, make the labels and curve relationships clear rather than relying on the shape of a sketch alone. Follow the exact wording and requirements of the question in the official paper.

- Attempt the paper first. Use the question paper without looking at the memo so you can identify which concepts and question types you can answer independently.
- Check both answers and mark allocation. The marking guidelines give expected responses and show how marks are distributed. For explanatory questions, they may accept other relevant responses, so compare the reasoning as well as the wording.
- Review graph criteria point by point. For the monopoly graph, check axes, curve labels, slopes and positions against the memo’s stated criteria.
- Use errors to target revision. Separate missed definitions, incomplete explanations and graphing mistakes; then revisit the corresponding topics across the paper rather than treating every lost mark as a monopoly issue.
The memo is a marking guide, not a replacement for the question paper: use the paper to understand what was asked and the memo to see the expected answer and how marks are awarded.
