It did not show which products had already become more expensive because of tariffs: the check was a one-day snapshot, not a before-and-after study. Later Federal Reserve analyses found broader tariff-related retail price pressure building through 2025, but those findings cannot explain the price change of any particular Amazon listing.
What the April 2025 Amazon price check measured
Tom’s Guide writer Mike Prospero published the comparison on April 8, 2025. He selected the first 200 products on Camelcamelcamel’s Popular Products page and copied their price information collected April 7—two days before tariffs were then scheduled to take effect. He compared each listed price with the product’s reported historical average.
The sample’s average listed price was $417.17, compared with a historical average of $446.62. Tom’s Guide calculated that the 200 items were down an average of 7.6% from their normal prices. Those are figures for that selected group on that collection date, not an estimate for all Amazon products or a measure of tariff-driven price changes. Tom’s Guide’s April 8, 2025 report described the comparison as an imperfect barometer because prices move with sales, product age and other factors.
Which products had the biggest gaps in that snapshot?
The largest reported gaps were differences between the April 7 listed price and a historical average—not verified price increases caused by tariffs. The table reproduces selected examples from the report; none should be read as a current Amazon price.

Tom’s Guide suggested the Sony outlier could reflect the age of the model and limited inventory. It also noted that the Winix price appeared discounted from its regular price. Those examples illustrate why a gap against a historical average does not identify its cause.
Apple products in the sample
Tom’s Guide said its Apple products were, on average, 1.4% below their average prices. The Apple Watch Series 10 (42mm, GPS) was listed at $399 against a $364 average; the report noted that $399 was its regular price and that the difference could reflect the watch not being on sale. The 10th-generation 256GB iPad was listed at $349, 27% below its $446 average. These are also April 2025 observations, not present-day prices.

What later research says about tariffs and retail prices
Broader research published after the Amazon comparison found evidence of tariff-related price pressure in retail data during 2025. It studies groups of goods and consumers, however, and does not establish why an individual Amazon listing changed price.
Federal Reserve Board household-purchase analysis
A March 2026 note by Federal Reserve Board researchers used item-level purchase and origin data from a panel of up to 200,000 U.S. households covering January 2018 through December 2025. The researchers reported an 8.5% year-over-year price increase by December 2025 for Chinese-imported goods in their dataset and estimated that at least 30% of tariffs on those imports passed through to consumers between April and December 2025. They described the adjustment as gradual rather than a single price spike. The analysis has limited coverage and does not include the entire household purchase basket. Federal Reserve Board, “The Slow Climb,” March 5, 2026.

Federal Reserve Bank of New York estimate
Staff Report 1201 from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, issued in August 2026 and revised in September, estimated that about 26% of the 2025 tariff increase passed through to consumer prices relative to less-exposed goods, holding aggregate conditions fixed. The report attributed 64% of that increase to direct effects on foreign varieties and 36% to indirect effects through imported inputs and domestic producer markups; it said the indirect effects take nine to twelve months to work through supply chains. This is an aggregate estimate, not a product-level forecast. Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Staff Report 1201.
Federal Reserve Board pass-through coefficients
A separate Federal Reserve Board FEDS paper, revised in August 2026, estimated a retail-price pass-through coefficient of about 0.15 using realized tariff rates and 0.20 using its benchmark tariff-exposure measure, which also accounts for import penetration. It also found a disproportionate welfare burden for low-income households and larger quantity declines for nonessential goods. These coefficients come from a different method and research question than the New York Fed’s 26% estimate, so the figures are not interchangeable. Federal Reserve Board FEDS paper.

Earlier tariff evidence has a different scope
The U.S. International Trade Commission’s March 2023 retrospective found that importers bore nearly the full cost of the specified Section 232 and Section 301 tariffs active as of March 15, 2022. Its price and trade estimates cover specified industries during 2018–2021; they are historical context, not a measure of 2025 tariffs or Amazon prices. USITC, March 15, 2023 report.

A listing that is higher than its historical average is a reason to look more closely, not proof that tariffs caused the difference. A single product’s price can reflect a sale ending, changing inventory, product age, a seller or listing change, or other market factors. The April 2025 comparison did not isolate these influences or compare the same products before and after tariffs took effect.
