Notre Dame confirmed in December 2024 that head coach Marcus Freeman had agreed to a long-term contract extension as the Fighting Irish prepared to host Indiana in the first round of the College Football Playoff. ESPN reported the deal was believed to be a four-year extension through the 2030 season, but exact compensation and full contract terms were not disclosed. Notre Dame went on to beat Indiana 27–17.
What did Marcus Freeman’s Notre Dame extension include?
Notre Dame announced Freeman’s agreement to a long-term extension on December 15, 2024. ESPN reported that the agreement was believed to be a four-year extension, keeping him under contract for six more seasons through 2030; the university did not publish the contract or exact financial terms in that report. ESPN’s report attributed the four-year detail to a source, while a Notre Dame official confirmed the agreement.
In a prepared statement reported by ESPN, Freeman thanked the Board of Trustees, university president Fr. Bob Dowd, and athletic director Pete Bevacqua. He said the investment was not just about him, but reflected a commitment to keeping the program competitive and supporting student-athletes and staff.
How much does Marcus Freeman make?
The cited reporting does not establish Freeman’s exact salary or total contract value. ESPN characterized the extension as making him one of the country’s highest-paid coaches, but did not provide a verified dollar amount. Any precise figure should therefore be treated as an estimate unless supported by contract terms disclosed by the university.

What changed in Freeman’s contract after 2024?
A later Associated Press report carried by KSL.com said Notre Dame restructured Freeman’s deal in December 2025 and added a year through 2031. That report did not disclose updated compensation or the full terms, so it does not resolve the uncertainty around his salary. The AP report carried by KSL.com described the later change; it was separate from the extension announced in 2024.
