A nice watch can appeal because of its mechanical craft, materials, design, heritage, personal meaning or the status it signals. Those qualities can make ownership worthwhile to some people—but a high price does not automatically mean better timekeeping, lasting value or a sound investment. The useful question is whether the specific watch and the experience of owning it justify the cost to you.
Why do expensive watches cost more?
One major cost difference is the movement. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry says mechanical watches generally cost more than quartz watches, describing meticulous production, close monitoring of components and, in some cases, hand finishing. Finishing may include polishing steel or decorating and chamfering movement bridges. The federation’s general explanation describes possible cost drivers; it does not prove that a particular model is fairly priced or made by hand.
Materials and external finishing matter, too. Watch cases can use steel, ceramic or precious metals, among other materials. A buyer can inspect the actual case, dial, bracelet or strap, proportions and finishing rather than treating the price or a brand name as proof of quality. The federation’s explainer is at the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry.
A Swiss-made label has defined criteria and carries consumer expectations, but it is not a shortcut for deciding that a specific watch is superior or worth its price. Check the model’s own specifications and construction; see the federation’s Swiss-made explanation.

What makes someone want a luxury watch?
Craft and engineering
Some owners enjoy the mechanism itself: the construction, finishing and the chance to observe a mechanical movement. This is an appeal of the object, not a guarantee that it will keep time more accurately than a quartz watch. Look for the specific movement and finishing details of the model you are considering.
Materials, design and everyday feel
A watch is also something worn and seen every day. Case material, size, dial layout, legibility, bracelet or strap, and finishing all affect whether it suits the wearer. A costly material is not automatically the most comfortable or practical choice; fit and appearance are personal.

Heritage, quality and personal meaning
Brand history can matter to luxury buyers, as can the expectation of material quality and long-term product value. EY’s 2026 luxury index reports that 64% of surveyed luxury consumers cited perceived product quality as a purchase reason; material quality was cited by 63%, long-term product value by 47%, brand heritage by 46%, and craftsmanship by 44%. These are findings from EY’s surveyed luxury consumers, not universal reasons or watch-only results. See EY’s 2026 luxury index.
Personal meaning is different: a watch may mark a milestone, be a gift, or become associated with a particular person or period. That value cannot be inferred from the movement or resale market. A desire to keep a watch for years is also an aspiration, not a lifespan guarantee; servicing, use, construction and parts availability affect what long-term ownership entails.

Status, identity and collecting
A recognizable luxury watch may signal taste, group affiliation or purchasing power. That signal can be part of the appeal, but it is subjective and does not make the watch objectively better. Collectors may also enjoy scarcity, design history or the hunt for a particular piece. Those motives are distinct from a dependable financial return.
Does buying an expensive watch make financial sense?
It can make sense as discretionary spending when the buyer can afford the full cost and values the watch for what it is. It is much harder to justify on the assumption that a watch will appreciate. Some buyers cite investment motives, and demand or scarcity can lift prices for particular sought-after models, but those examples do not establish that watches generally make reliable investments. For a personal-finance decision, separate the amount you are willing to spend for enjoyment from any hoped-for resale proceeds. Consider the purchase price alongside any model-specific service requirements and the seller’s warranty and return terms. Do not treat a brand’s reputation, a Swiss-made designation or general claims about scarcity as a substitute for evidence about the exact watch and its market.

Interest in traditional watches remains visible in survey results, though the figures describe particular samples rather than a universal forecast. Deloitte’s 2025 Swiss Watch Industry Study says 72% of surveyed consumers planned to buy a traditional watch for their own use in the following 12 months. The study surveyed 6,500 consumers across Switzerland and major Swiss-watch export markets. Read the finding in its stated context at Deloitte’s 2025 study.

Pre-owned can open access to discontinued designs or a lower entry price, but the condition and protections vary by seller and watch. EY’s 2026 index reports that seven in ten Swiss luxury consumers surveyed would buy certified second-hand luxury products directly from a luxury brand; that is a Swiss result across luxury goods, not a watch-only finding. Neither survey establishes that a given used listing is authentic, fairly priced or a bargain.
What should you check before buying?
Compare the individual watch and the terms of the transaction, not just the brand or headline price.
- Movement: Identify whether it is mechanical or quartz, and check the model’s stated accuracy rather than assuming one type is more accurate.
- Materials and finishing: Confirm the actual case, dial, bracelet or strap materials and inspect the workmanship relevant to the price.
- Fit and use: Consider case size, comfort, legibility and whether the style suits how you expect to wear it.
- Ownership needs: Ask about service requirements and parts support for the particular model.
- Pre-owned condition and authenticity: Request clear details on condition, provenance or authentication, and service history. Do not infer safety from a marketplace or seller label alone.
- Transaction protections: Check warranty coverage, return terms and total price, and confirm them with the seller before paying.
A new purchase may offer a direct brand or retailer experience; a pre-owned purchase may provide access to a piece no longer sold new. Which is preferable depends on the exact watch, condition, seller protections and price—not on a general rule that new or used is always better.
