The five “mysterious” Uniswap V3 liquidity providers profiled by Ivan Vakhmyanin, Tom Grant and Isabela Bagi are best read as historical case studies, not as a current ranking or a guide to expected returns. Their 2023 analysis follows Ethereum positions from July 2022 to July 2023 and illustrates how range choice, price movement and fees can produce sharply different outcomes—even for very large positions.
What makes these Uniswap V3 positions different?
In Uniswap V3, a liquidity provider (LP) can choose a price range for a position rather than supplying liquidity across the entire price curve. Concentrating liquidity in a narrower range can make more of the capital active and potentially increase the provider’s share of fees while the market price remains inside that range. But if the price leaves the range, the position stops earning fees until the price returns or the LP adjusts it.
That trade-off makes range selection consequential. A narrow range may concentrate fee-earning activity, but it also leaves less room for price movement and may require closer monitoring. Repositioning can involve gas, swaps and the cost of realizing portfolio changes. These are explanations from the authors’ 2023 article, not a current audit of Uniswap’s protocol mechanics.
The five cases at a glance
The figures below are estimates reported by Vakhmyanin, Grant and Bagi in 2023, not independently audited results. “Not stated” means the article did not report that detail.

| Case and pool | Range or position status | Size and period | Estimated fees | Estimated result | What the figure describes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Blind Shooter USDC-ETH, 0.05% fee tier |
Outside the then-current price range; the authors suggest a limit-order-like purpose, but do not establish the provider’s motive. | More than $500,000 USDC; opened November 30, 2022 and still open when the article was published in 2023. | None while the position remained out of range, according to the authors. | Not stated (Vakhmyanin, Grant and Bagi, 2023). | One position. |
| The Enigmatic Trader WBTC-ETH, 0.3% fee tier |
Range width not stated (Vakhmyanin, Grant and Bagi, 2023); the authors say providers in this volatile, correlated pair often used wider ranges. | Individual position size and holding period not stated (Vakhmyanin, Grant and Bagi, 2023). | Not stated (Vakhmyanin, Grant and Bagi, 2023). | Around $40 million in net provider profits for WBTC-ETH pools over the preceding 12 months, as estimated in the 2023 article. | Pool-level aggregate, not a result for one provider or position. |
| Mr. Unlucky WBTC-ETH, 0.3% fee tier |
Narrow range; the position was closed after the market moved against it. | $10 million position; lasted less than half a day. | More than $4 million in lifetime trading fees across other positions attributed to the wallet, according to the authors. | More than $400,000 estimated loss on the short-lived position; the wallet’s other attributed activity had an estimated net loss exceeding $2.5 million. | Both one position and a separate wallet-level estimate; the wallet-level figure covers other positions too. |
| The Money Mastermind LINK-ETH, 0.3% fee tier |
Large, narrow-range position; closed before LINK’s price fell. | $6 million investment over seven days. | $60,000, included in the authors’ estimated earnings. | $500,000 estimated earnings over seven days. | One position; the article does not establish that this result is typical or repeatable. |
| The Wealthy Prophet USDC-USDT, 0.01% fee tier |
A contract labeled “1inch Team Investment Fund” added liquidity; range width not stated (Vakhmyanin, Grant and Bagi, 2023). | Around $75 million added in three transactions on February 9, 2023; closed after 22 days. | The authors attribute the estimated profit entirely to fees; a separate fee total is not stated (Vakhmyanin, Grant and Bagi, 2023). | $26,000 estimated profit. | One position associated with a labeled contract, not a verified identification of the people behind it. |
What the five providers did—and what the cases reveal
The Blind Shooter: capital can sit idle outside its range
The authors report that the position’s range had not been reached, so the USDC was not earning fees during the period they examined. They note that the last transaction was 50 days before publication and interpret the inactivity as evidence the position may have been intentional. That is an inference, not confirmation of a strategy. Their suggestion that it might have functioned like a limit order is also only a possible explanation.
The Enigmatic Trader: pool performance is not an individual return
The WBTC-ETH example contrasts a pair of volatile, correlated crypto assets with stablecoin pools. The authors say LPs in WBTC-ETH often used wider ranges, and report that the pool ranked second and third in aggregate provider profitability, with around $40 million in net provider profits over the preceding 12 months. That historical pool-level estimate cannot tell a reader what any one provider earned, and it is not a present-day ranking.

Mr. Unlucky: high lifetime fees can coexist with a net loss
The authors attribute the wallet to aavebank.eth, address 0xD730cd62CDA9cfdc109Be2d819B0337fafdCA959. They describe the short-lived position as losing more than $400,000 after BTC and ETH prices fell, then note that prices recovered within ten days. Their broader wallet estimate pairs more than $4 million in lifetime trading fees with a net loss exceeding $2.5 million. Fees alone therefore do not show whether a liquidity strategy made money: price movement and the rest of the position’s economics matter too.
The wallet attribution and P&L are the authors’ analysis, not proof of the person behind the address or of the wallet’s complete financial position. Hedging or activity elsewhere could change the outcome of a broader strategy.

The Money Mastermind: a short winning window is not a yield forecast
The authors estimate that the LINK-ETH position earned $500,000, including $60,000 in fees, on a $6 million investment during seven days. They say it was closed before LINK’s price fell. This is an estimate for a specific historical position, not evidence that the same timing, price movement or return can be reproduced.
The Wealthy Prophet: timing does not establish foresight
The authors report that the contract labeled “1inch Team Investment Fund” withdrew the USDC-USDT position four days before the USDC depeg event. They characterize the timing as fortunate; the timing alone does not show that the provider anticipated the event. Nor does the label establish the real-world identity of the people or organization controlling the contract.

How to interpret the reported results
- Separate fees from total profit or loss. A fee total is only one part of an LP position’s result. The Mr. Unlucky example shows why a wallet can collect substantial fees and still have an estimated net loss.
- Check whether a position was in range. A large deposit does not guarantee fee income. In the Blind Shooter case, the authors say the price never reached the selected range during the period described.
- Distinguish position, wallet and pool figures. The WBTC-ETH profit estimate is an aggregate for pool providers; the Mr. Unlucky figures include both an individual position and activity attributed to a wallet. They are not interchangeable measures.
- Read the time window and market context. The five examples concern Ethereum activity from 2022–2023. They do not establish current pool performance or predict a future position’s result.
What the authors’ analysis can—and cannot—establish
Vakhmyanin, Grant and Bagi published the analysis on Coinmonks/Medium on August 10, 2023; a HackerNoon version followed on August 12. They say they used Datamint’s indexed DeFi data engine to replay liquidity events and develop liquidity heatmaps and position-level analysis, including estimated accrued fees. The article itself warns that calculations may contain errors and presents extreme cases rather than curated decision-support examples.
The analysis follows individual Ethereum wallets. It cannot, by itself, show whether a provider hedged through another wallet or venue, or account for other parts of a broader strategy. The names in the article are editorial labels for pseudonymous wallets or a labeled contract, not verified personal identities. The authors frame the piece as an empirical illustration, not financial advice.
