Google Analytics 4 (GA4) can help you spot where shoppers drop out, which products sell, and which landing pages or channels bring valuable visits. It does not prove that a website change caused sales to rise: use the patterns and attributed credit it reports to form questions, then test changes against consistent measures.
1. Track the full purchase journey
GA4 does not automatically collect every ecommerce interaction on every site or app. Your implementation needs to send ecommerce events for the actions you want to analyze. Google’s ecommerce event setup guidance and recommended events cover interactions such as product views, adding items to a cart, checkout, purchases, refunds, and promotion activity.
Use the recommended event names and parameters where they fit your store. Consistent implementation helps GA4 populate its standard reports and dimensions. Confirm that the events reflect what actually happens in your checkout rather than assuming every store has identical steps.
2. Validate event data before making decisions
Check whether events are being sent correctly before relying on a report. GA4’s DebugView lets you inspect events in real time while testing your site or app. Verify that event names and values match the actions you perform, and that purchase details such as currency and item information are present where required.

Processing takes time: Google says ecommerce reports and explorations can take up to 24 hours to populate, while its ecommerce overview says data typically appears within 24–48 hours after tagged users begin using a site or app. Treat those as approximate expectations, not guarantees. See Google’s ecommerce overview and event setup guidance.
3. Compare products in the Ecommerce purchases report
The Ecommerce purchases report helps you review products or services sold, but it depends on correctly implemented ecommerce events. If required parameters are missing, events may not appear in the report. Google’s Ecommerce purchases report documentation describes the report and its requirements.

Use it to investigate which items are earning purchases and revenue, then check that reported item names, categories, and prices agree with your store and tracking setup. When comparing products, keep the date range, currency, and event definitions consistent; otherwise, apparent differences may reflect measurement or period choices rather than product performance.
GA4 distinguishes event-scoped parameters, which describe an interaction, from item-scoped parameters, which describe products within that interaction. That distinction matters when diagnosing a discrepancy between a purchase event and its product details. See Google’s ecommerce scopes explanation.

4. Find the step where shoppers leave
Review the relevant steps in your store’s purchase journey, such as product view, add_to_cart, begin_checkout, add_shipping_info, add_payment_info, and purchase. These recommended events can help you see where the volume or rate changes between stages.
- Choose a consistent period. Compare the same date range and use the same event definitions each time.
- Look for a meaningful drop. Compare step counts and rates to find where fewer shoppers proceed.
- Investigate the corresponding experience. Check the product page, promotion, shipping step, payment options, or checkout behavior that aligns with the drop.
- Test a change. Treat the drop as a lead for investigation, not proof of what caused it. Measure whether a controlled or otherwise comparable change improves the outcome.
Google’s ecommerce event guidance covers these measurement events. Your store may use only some of them, so interpret the funnel in light of the steps your implementation actually records.

5. Evaluate landing pages and acquisition by business outcomes
A landing page or traffic source is more useful to evaluate when you connect visits to an important outcome, rather than judging it by traffic alone. GA4 reports can include key-event counts for landing pages and user acquisition. The reports help you examine how users arrive and whether their visits include actions your business values.
Mark only meaningful actions as key events—for example, a purchase or a qualified lead. A rise in sessions is not itself evidence of a sales improvement. Compare landing pages, sources, or campaigns over consistent periods and alongside purchase or revenue outcomes where available. Google explains key events and lists relevant Analytics reports.

Attribution assigns credit for a key event among eligible marketing touchpoints; it does not establish that a channel caused the purchase. Google says data-driven attribution is the default attribution model, and GA4 settings also cover which channels can receive credit and the key-event lookback window. Those settings affect how credit is distributed.
Before comparing channels, keep the attribution model, eligible channels, lookback window, date range, currency, and event definitions steady. Review attributed purchase outcomes alongside appropriate funnel measures, then treat differences as questions to investigate rather than a definitive ranking of what caused sales. Google describes how attribution credit is assigned, getting started with attribution, and key events and conversions.
If you advertise with Google Ads, GA4 key events can also be used to create Google Ads conversions. That connection can support advertising measurement, but the attribution caveat still applies: credited conversions are not causal proof.
