Emad Mostaque said he was stepping down from Stability AI to address what he saw as excessive concentration of power in artificial intelligence. The company announced on March 23, 2024, that he had resigned as CEO and board member to pursue decentralized AI; that statement describes his public rationale, not a complete or independently verified account of why he left.

What happened at Stability AI?

Stability AI announced on March 23, 2024, that Mostaque had resigned both as chief executive and as a member of the board. The company, known for Stable Diffusion and other generative AI work, said he was leaving to pursue decentralized AI. Its announcement named chief operating officer Shan Shan Wong and chief technology officer Christian Laforte interim co-CEOs while the board searched for a permanent CEO. Stability AI’s announcement is the primary source for the departure and interim appointments.

Why did Mostaque say he was leaving?

In contemporaneous reporting, Mostaque’s explanation was quoted as: “The concentration of power in AI is bad for us all. I decided to step down to fix this at Stability & elsewhere.” TechCrunch’s report attributed those words to him.

That makes the headline’s “to fix concentration of power in AI” a compressed version of Mostaque’s stated position. It should not be read as proof that this was his only reason for resigning. The public statements cited here do not provide a full account of internal board or investor discussions.

What did Stability AI say about the transition?

In the company announcement, Mostaque said: “I am proud two years after bringing on our first developer to have led Stability to hundreds of millions of downloads and the best models across modalities. I believe strongly in Stability AI’s mission and feel the company is in capable hands. It is now time to ensure AI remains open and decentralised.” The “hundreds of millions of downloads” figure is his claim in the announcement; the statement does not give a measurement method.

Board chairman Jim O’Shaughnessy thanked Mostaque for “his leadership and relentless commitment to Stability AI and the open source movement.” Those remarks record the company’s public response, rather than independently verifying the circumstances of the resignation.

What does “decentralized AI” mean in this context?

Mostaque framed decentralized AI as a response to power being concentrated in the AI industry. In broad terms, decentralization describes efforts to distribute control or participation rather than place it primarily in a small number of organizations. The cited statements establish his public view and the company’s description of his next direction; they do not show that his resignation itself changed how power is distributed across the industry.
