Dell confirmed on September 20, 2024, that its security team was investigating a threat actor’s claim that data involving more than 10,000 employees and partners had been exposed. Dell did not confirm that a breach occurred or verify the sample, the number of people affected, or the data’s source. The accurate description is an investigation into an allegation—not a confirmed Dell breach.
What the threat actor claimed
A threat actor using the handle grep reportedly described a “minor data breach” in September 2024 and claimed the data involved more than 10,000 Dell employees and partners. That number came from the threat actor; it was not a verified Dell count. BleepingComputer’s report said the alleged records included names, unique identifiers, employment status, and an internal identification string.
Reporting said a small sample was shared publicly and access to the alleged full database was offered for one BreachForums credit, then reported as about $0.30. The advertised price does not establish that the data was authentic or complete.
What Dell confirmed—and what it did not
Dell’s statement, quoted by CRN, was: “We are aware of the claims and our security team is currently investigating.” CRN reported the statement on September 20, 2024.

What information was reportedly involved
The reported fields were employee and partner names, unique identifiers, employment status, and an internal identification string. The reviewed reporting did not verify that the alleged material contained passwords, Social Security numbers, payment or bank information, health information, or authentication tokens.

There is also no source-backed basis to conclude that all Dell employees were affected, that customer records were included, or that identity theft occurred. Because names or employment details can be used in convincing impersonation attempts, treat unexpected messages claiming to be from Dell or a business contact cautiously. Verify requests through a known contact method rather than links or phone numbers in the message.

CRN described a separate May 2024 Dell customer-portal incident involving limited purchase-related information. The September employee-data allegation has not been shown to be connected to that incident.

A separately reported 2025 compromise involved Dell’s Solution Center. Dell said that environment was isolated from customer and partner systems and used primarily synthetic, publicly available, Dell test, or demonstration data. That later incident does not establish that the September 2024 allegation was genuine or related.
