TikTok announced its global Change Makers Program on May 21, 2024, selecting 50 social-impact creators for six months of support and pledging more than $1 million to nonprofits. The money was not a cash prize for creators: TikTok said it would donate $25,000 to a nonprofit in honor of each Change Maker. The announcement came amid the 2024 U.S. ban-or-divestiture fight; that context is now historical, with AP and Axios reporting that a U.S. divestiture deal closed in January 2026.
What TikTok announced
The initiative had two connected parts: a six-month TikTok Change Makers Program for selected creators, and the Change Makers Grant, which TikTok said would provide more than $1 million to more than 30 global and local nonprofit organizations. TikTok described the program as its first global social-impact creator-elevation initiative. Its stated goals included helping participating creators build communities, reach new audiences, and connect with nonprofit organizations.
The headline figure needs a careful reading. TikTok said it would donate $25,000 to a nonprofit in honor of each of the 50 Change Makers. That is not the same as paying each creator $25,000, and the announcement did not describe the grant as a general creator fund. TikTok’s official announcement is at TikTok Newsroom.
Who received the money?
The announced recipients were nonprofit organizations and causes associated with the creators, not the creators personally. TikTok described the total as “over $1 million” and said the grant would reach more than 30 organizations. Because the announcement does not provide a complete allocation table, it does not establish that every nonprofit received the same amount.

At $25,000 for each of 50 creators, the stated per-creator donation structure would add up to at least $1.25 million if applied to all 50. TikTok’s own public wording, however, was “over $1 million”; the total should not be presented as an audited final disbursement figure.
What did the creators receive?
TikTok said participants would receive tools, resources, and opportunities intended to help them build engaged communities and reach new audiences. The company also described real-world opportunities and connections with nonprofit organizations. The announcement did not specify a compensation schedule, contract terms, selection rubric, guaranteed platform promotion, or promised audience growth.

Nor did it describe an open application round. It presented the inaugural cohort as a selected group of 50, so creators should not interpret the announcement as an invitation to apply for a share of the grant or as evidence of an evergreen enrollment path.
Who was selected, and what causes did they represent?
The global cohort included creators working across a range of social-impact subjects. TikTok’s U.S. announcement highlighted, among others, Barbara Costello (@brunchwithbabs), JT Laybourne, Kara Lewis, Franziska Trautmann, Caulin Donaldson, Joel Bervell, and Alethea Crimmins. These are examples, not a complete list; TikTok’s regional announcements spotlighted different participants.

Why the announcement was tied to the U.S. ban fight
On April 24, 2024, President Joe Biden signed the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act. It required ByteDance to complete a qualified divestiture of TikTok’s U.S. operations or face restrictions that could make the app unavailable in the country. TikTok announced Change Makers on May 21, while it was challenging the law and contesting the government’s national-security rationale. The Congressional Research Service summarizes the law and its original deadline, which fell in January 2025 and could be extended by the president under specified conditions: CRS analysis of the law.

The timing led TechCrunch to frame the announcement as arriving while a U.S. ban loomed and to interpret the program as part of TikTok’s broader image-management effort. That is an outside interpretation, not a stated TikTok purpose or proof that the program was created to influence the legal dispute. The announcement itself presented the initiative as support for creators and nonprofits. TechCrunch’s contemporaneous coverage is here.

The threat described in the 2024 headline should not be mistaken for the unchanged status in 2026. The Supreme Court rejected TikTok’s challenge to the divestiture law in January 2025, according to the Congressional Research Service’s case summary. The Trump administration later delayed enforcement while pursuing a transaction.

In September 2025, the White House said a proposed U.S.-controlled joint venture would satisfy the qualified-divestiture requirement. Its announcement described ByteDance as holding less than 20% and Oracle as the U.S. security provider: White House executive action and fact sheet. The Associated Press and Axios reported that the deal closed on January 23, 2026: AP report and Axios report.
What the announcement does not establish
- It does not say that creators received cash awards or that individuals could apply for a portion of the grant.
- It does not guarantee algorithmic placement, a particular level of reach, or monetization.
- It does not publish a full audited breakdown of payments to every nonprofit.
- It does not provide a comprehensive post-program impact report or independently verified long-term outcomes.
TikTok also cited more than 50,000 posts under #TikTokforGood as context for the initiative, but that figure alone does not measure the program’s results.
