Hostinger is the best all-around starting point for most new Linux-hosting customers in 2026, based on its combination of introductory price, beginner tools and common website features. But the right choice depends on what you host: Namecheap is a better fit for low ongoing cost, Bluehost for guided WordPress setup, and ScalaHosting for a managed VPS step up.
Here, “Linux hosting” means a hosting service built on Linux—not necessarily a server you can administer as root. The prices below are US-dollar offers observed around August 18, 2026; promotions, billing terms, taxes, regional storefronts and checkout selections can change the total. Confirm the current terms on each provider’s linked page before buying.
Quick comparison: the best Linux hosts for different needs
| Provider | Best for | Price and term observed | Sites and storage | Backups and domain | Control panel | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hostinger | Overall value for new and small sites | Premium: $2.99/month for 48 months ($143.52 upfront); renews at $10.99/month | 3 websites; 20 GB SSD | Weekly backups; free domain for one year | hPanel | Renewal is much higher than the introductory rate |
| SiteGround | Managed WordPress and small businesses | Comparison pages show about $2.99–$3.99/month; confirm the term and renewal at checkout | Plan-specific; not stated in the cited pricing evidence | Plan-specific; verify frequency, retention and domain terms | Not stated in the cited evidence | Higher long-term cost may outweigh managed features for price-focused buyers |
| Bluehost | WordPress beginners | Starter: $3.99/month for 36 months; renews at $9.99/month | 10 websites; 10 GB NVMe SSD | Weekly backups; free domain for first year | Not stated in the cited pricing evidence | Daily backups require a higher plan or add-on; Starter has no phone support |
| DreamHost | Simple plans and daily backups | Launch: $2.89/month for the first year; renews at $10.99/month | 25 websites; 25 GB NVMe SSD | Daily automated backups; free domain for one year | Custom panel, not cPanel | Visit guidance is not a capacity guarantee |
| InMotion Hosting | Small businesses, agencies and developers | Displayed Power plan: about $5.99/month; renews at $17.99/month | 10 websites; 200 GB NVMe | Backup inclusion varies; free domain for one year | Plan-dependent | Costs more than budget hosts; qualifying plans only may have up to 90-day refund terms |
| Namecheap | Low-cost conventional shared hosting | Stellar: 30-day free trial, then displayed at $2.28/month; billing-cycle pricing can vary | 3 websites; 20 GB SSD | 30 mailboxes; confirm backup terms for the plan | cPanel | Less guided onboarding; low price alone does not establish performance under load |
| ScalaHosting | Managed growth beyond shared hosting | Current exact plan and renewal price not stated in the cited comparison evidence; check checkout | Plan-specific; not stated in the cited evidence | Plan-specific; verify before purchase | SPanel or other options; verify the selected plan | Managed VPS can be excessive and more expensive for a basic site |
These are use-case recommendations, not a claim that one provider is fastest or most reliable for every website. Current comparison coverage likewise separates budget, beginner, managed WordPress and VPS use cases (Hostinger comparison; TechRadar comparison; Tom’s Guide comparison). Price and feature listings here are provider-page signals unless explicitly described otherwise, not independent benchmark results.
What Linux web hosting means—and what it does not
A Linux host runs your website on a server using the Linux operating system. A common web stack includes a web server such as Apache, LiteSpeed or Nginx; PHP for many dynamic sites; MySQL or MariaDB databases; SSL certificates; and tools for domains, files, email and scheduled tasks. The exact stack and tools vary by host and plan.

- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.

- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Linux hosting is a common fit for WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, Laravel and other PHP-based applications. Windows hosting is more relevant when an application specifically requires technologies such as ASP.NET or Microsoft SQL Server.
The label does not tell you that you can choose Ubuntu, Debian or another distribution, install arbitrary system packages, change the kernel or administer the machine as root. Those are server-access questions. Shared hosting typically gives you an account within a provider-managed environment; VPS and dedicated products offer more control, depending on whether the provider manages the operating system for you.
Hosting types differ in control and responsibility
- Shared hosting: Multiple customers use resources on a host-managed server. It is usually the lowest-cost fit for ordinary websites, but the account has defined resource and software limits.
- Managed WordPress hosting: Hosting configured around WordPress, often with WordPress-specific updates, staging or support. It may still run on Linux, but it is not necessarily suitable for every PHP or Node.js application.
- Reseller hosting: Lets a customer package hosting accounts for clients; it is an account-management product, not automatically a more powerful server.
- Managed VPS: Provides allocated virtual-server resources while the provider handles some server administration. Confirm exactly which patching, security, backup and monitoring tasks are included.
- Unmanaged VPS: Gives more server control, but you take responsibility for tasks such as updates, firewall configuration, hardening, monitoring and recovery.
- Dedicated hosting: Reserves a physical server for one customer, typically at a higher cost and with more operational responsibility.
- Cloud hosting: Uses cloud infrastructure and can offer different scaling and deployment models; the term alone does not guarantee automatic scaling or managed operations.
How to judge a Linux host before buying
Compare the whole service and its costs, not just the monthly promotional number. For this guide, the decision framework gives the greatest weight to cost and pricing transparency, then plan features, recovery, performance infrastructure, support and ease of use, and finally scalability and portability. The provider details below are not all equally disclosed, so verify plan-specific terms before checkout.
Calculate the real cost
Record the introductory rate, required billing term and amount due today, then compare the renewal rate and the next 12 months of service. Add any domain renewal, email after a free period, backups, malware removal, migration, premium support, security or CDN add-ons, and applicable taxes. A displayed monthly price can require paying multiple years upfront; compare the cash total as well as the normalized monthly figure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck limits that affect your application
- Number of websites, storage type and capacity, inode or file-count limits, databases and bandwidth policy.
- CPU, RAM, PHP worker and I/O limits, plus how the host handles overages or resource throttling.
- PHP version selection, MySQL or MariaDB, SSH/SFTP, Git, WP-CLI, Composer, cron jobs and staging.
- Node.js, Python, Ruby or Laravel support only where the provider explicitly advertises it for the plan you are considering.
“Unmetered” or “unlimited” does not mean unlimited CPU, RAM, concurrent processes or acceptable use. Ask what happens when a site approaches its account limits.
Separate performance features from performance proof
NVMe storage, caching technologies, a CDN and server locations are useful infrastructure details, but they do not by themselves prove that a particular site will load faster. Results also depend on application code, caching, database work, geography and traffic. Treat a provider’s visit estimate as guidance, not as a comparable capacity guarantee: page size, logged-in use, checkout activity, plugins and traffic spikes can change the demand substantially.
Inspect recovery and support
For backups, check frequency, retention, what is included (files, databases and email), restore method, and whether restoration is included in the price. A weekly backup can lose more recent changes than a daily one; neither replaces an independent off-site copy. Also distinguish an uptime guarantee or SLA—which sets contractual terms—from independently measured availability. DNS problems, planned work, application bugs, expired domains and account suspension may be treated differently under a guarantee.
For support, identify available channels and hours, and whether staff assist with migrations, DNS, malware or application errors. A provider’s support reputation does not establish its uptime or raw server speed.

cPanel is familiar to many developers and agencies and has extensive third-party documentation. A custom panel can be simpler and integrate closely with the provider’s own tools, but its workflows may not transfer to another host. If you already run a cPanel site, using another cPanel provider such as Namecheap can reduce interface changes; it does not remove the need to test the migration. Keep independent copies of site files and databases, maintain DNS control, and check whether your current panel’s email, cron and other settings need to be recreated.

1. Hostinger: best overall value for many new sites
Plan and price signal
Hostinger’s US page lists Premium at $2.99 per month when paid for 48 months, or $143.52 upfront, with renewal shown at $10.99 per month. The plan lists three websites, 20 GB SSD storage, weekly backups, a domain free for the first year, CDN access and email free for one year subject to mailbox limits. It includes 30-day money-back protection; check the terms and exclusions at purchase. See Hostinger’s current plan details.
Why choose it
It is a strong default for a blog, portfolio, freelancer site or small brand that wants a modern dashboard and common website tools at a low initial price. Hostinger advertises WordPress and Node.js support, along with a website builder and AI tools; availability of advanced features varies by plan.
Trade-offs and who should look elsewhere
The renewal price is substantially higher than the introductory rate, so compare the full term rather than treating $2.99 as an ongoing price. Hostinger uses hPanel rather than cPanel, which creates a learning curve for cPanel users. Weekly backups may also be too infrequent for a frequently updated store. Choose a different product if you need root access or server-level control: shared hosting is not a substitute for a managed VPS.
2. SiteGround: best for managed WordPress and small-business support
Plan and price signal
Comparison pages show SiteGround entry pricing around $2.99–$3.99 per month, depending on region, promotion and billing term. The exact current official offer and renewal price are not established here; confirm both on SiteGround’s pricing page.
Why choose it
SiteGround is worth considering when managed WordPress tools, caching, staging, migration and a guided experience matter more than the lowest long-term bill. Those features are most valuable when you will use them—for example, a small business that needs a safe staging workflow—not merely because they appear in a plan description.
Trade-offs and who should look elsewhere
Current comparisons describe its entry-level storage as comparatively limited, and renewal pricing can make it less attractive for a buyer focused on long-term cost. The cited pricing evidence does not establish exact plan limits, backup retention or control-panel details, so check the selected plan rather than assuming all features are included. A support-oriented positioning is not proof of superior uptime or raw server speed.
3. Bluehost: best for WordPress beginners
Plan and price signal
Bluehost lists its Starter plan at $3.99 per month for a 36-month term, renewing at $9.99 per month. The plan includes ten websites, 10 GB NVMe SSD storage, a free domain for the first year, free SSL, a migration tool and weekly backups. Bluehost advertises a 99.99% uptime SLA and gives an ideal capacity estimate of approximately 40,000 monthly visits for the plan; that estimate is provider guidance, not a performance guarantee. Check the current Bluehost plan terms.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why choose it
Guided onboarding, WordPress-oriented tools and an ecosystem aimed at first-time site owners make Bluehost a reasonable choice for someone launching a first WordPress site. SSH, WP-CLI, staging, CDN access, managed WordPress updates and 24/7 chat support are advertised. Its beginner-focused feature information is also available in Bluehost’s WordPress beginner guide.
Trade-offs and who should look elsewhere
Starter’s backups are weekly, not daily; daily backups require a higher plan or an add-on. Phone support is not included on Starter, and the interface includes upsells. The SLA is a contractual commitment, not evidence that every customer will experience 99.99% measured uptime. Consider another provider if low renewal cost or daily backups on the entry plan is essential.

- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
4. DreamHost: best for simple plans and daily backups
Plan and price signal
DreamHost’s Web Hosting Launch plan is displayed at $2.89 per month for the first year and auto-renews at $10.99 per month. It lists 25 websites, 25 GB NVMe SSD storage, unmetered bandwidth, daily automated backups, unlimited free SSL certificates, a domain free for one year and a 30-day money-back guarantee. The provider gives guidance of 40,000 monthly visits, which is not a hard capacity limit. Confirm current DreamHost plan details.
Why choose it
It fits a reader who wants a relatively straightforward hosting plan and values daily automated backups. DreamHost uses a custom control panel rather than cPanel, a fact that may be welcome to a first-time site owner but inconvenient when moving an existing cPanel workflow.
Recommended Free Tools
Trade-offs and who should look elsewhere
DreamHost advertises a 100% uptime guarantee; that is a policy, not a promise that downtime cannot occur. The introductory rate applies to the first year on the displayed plan, so include renewal in the budget. If your application needs advanced server configuration, consider VPS hosting instead. For panel and guarantee context, see TechRadar’s DreamHost review.
5. InMotion Hosting: best for agencies, developers and migration needs
Plan and price signal
An InMotion Power plan is displayed around $5.99 per month and renews at $17.99 per month. Listed features include ten websites, 200 GB NVMe storage, unmetered bandwidth, a domain free for one year, free SSL and free migration. The hosting page advertises 99.99% uptime and security monitoring, while the cited plan listing advertises a 99.9% uptime guarantee; check the terms for the exact product. Up to 90 days of money-back protection applies only to qualifying plans. Verify the current InMotion offer and terms.
Why choose it
InMotion is a fit for a small business or agency that values migration help, human support, developer access and more storage on a shared plan. The provider advertises 24/7 human support and managed options. Its VPS listings include configurations with 4 vCPU cores, 8 GB RAM, 160 GB NVMe SSD, 5 TB bandwidth and dedicated IPs, with cPanel or Control Web Panel availability; verify the exact configuration and management scope before purchase.
Trade-offs and who should look elsewhere
It generally costs more than Hostinger or Namecheap, and the plan structure may take longer to learn. Backup inclusion varies; some shared plans may charge separately for backups, so verify frequency, retention and restore charges. Do not assume the longest refund period applies to every product. See TechRadar’s InMotion review for additional review context.

Plan and price signal
Namecheap’s Stellar plan offers a 30-day free trial and is displayed at $2.28 per month after the trial. It includes three websites, 20 GB SSD storage, 30 mailboxes and cPanel. Stellar Plus is displayed at $2.98 per month after its trial, with unlimited websites, unmetered SSD storage, unlimited mailboxes and automated daily, weekly and monthly backups. Stellar Business is displayed at $4.98 per month after its trial. Billing cycle and promotion affect the price, so confirm the checkout total and terms. Review Namecheap’s shared-hosting plans.
Why choose it
Namecheap is attractive to budget-conscious customers who prefer cPanel or want their hosting and domain services under one vendor. It is also a conventional shared-hosting option for several modest websites on its entry plan.
Trade-offs and who should look elsewhere
Its onboarding is less guided than Hostinger’s or Bluehost’s, and a low price does not establish how a site will perform under load. “Unmetered” storage is not unlimited server resources, and acceptable-use policies still apply. Verify backup retention and restoration details for the exact plan; the cited feature listing does not establish every recovery term.

7. ScalaHosting: best managed step up from shared hosting
Plan and price signal
Current comparison coverage positions ScalaHosting as a managed-hosting or managed-VPS choice, rather than a direct match for the cheapest shared plans. The exact current plan specifications and renewal price are not established here; compare CPU, RAM, storage, backups and renewal terms on ScalaHosting’s site before buying.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why choose it
Consider ScalaHosting when a growing site or online store needs more room than basic shared hosting and you want a managed server path rather than an unmanaged Linux VPS. Its value is more relevant to customers who need that capacity and management than to someone launching a small brochure site.
Trade-offs and who should look elsewhere
Managed VPS pricing is higher than budget shared hosting, and the products are not directly comparable. Check whether the selected plan uses SPanel or another panel and what server operations the provider actually manages. If your site is simple and has no resource pressure, a shared plan may be the more economical choice.
Which host should you choose?
- Best broad value for a new small site: Hostinger, if hPanel is acceptable and you have budgeted for renewal.
- Lowest displayed ongoing shared-hosting price among these plans: Namecheap, after its stated free trial; compare the actual billing cycle and included recovery features.
- First WordPress site and guided onboarding: Bluehost.
- Managed WordPress tools and small-business support: SiteGround, if its checkout price and renewal justify the features you need.
- Simple plans with daily automated backups: DreamHost.
- Migration help, developer tools or larger shared-plan storage: InMotion, with plan-specific backup and refund terms checked.
- Growing site that needs managed server resources: ScalaHosting or another managed VPS provider.
- Root access, Docker, Redis, persistent workers or custom daemons: Choose an appropriate VPS or application platform, not ordinary shared hosting.
When shared Linux hosting is—and is not—a good fit
Good fit
- Blogs, portfolios, brochure sites and local-business websites.
- Low-to-moderate traffic WordPress sites and small WooCommerce stores.
- Landing pages and marketing sites.
- Developers who need PHP, databases, SSH, Git or cron jobs but do not need root privileges, subject to the plan’s actual support.
Poor fit
- High-traffic stores with strict latency needs or substantial checkout activity.
- Applications that require root, Docker, custom system packages, persistent workers or background services.
- Sites with unpredictable spikes, large marketplaces, SaaS applications or media-heavy services.
- Compliance-sensitive workloads requiring specified infrastructure or audit controls that a shared plan does not document.
For an ecommerce site, prioritize daily backups, staging, restore testing, security monitoring, database performance and an upgrade path. If traffic starts straining the account, first optimize caching and application load, then ask the host about CPU, RAM, PHP worker and I/O limits before upgrading.
Pricing traps to check before checkout
- Billing term: A monthly equivalent may require paying one, three or four years upfront.
- Renewal: Use the renewal rate to estimate the next year, not the discounted first term.
- Domain: A “free domain” is typically limited to the first year and eligible extensions; check renewal cost and whether it is bundled with the qualifying plan.
- Email: Confirm mailbox count, storage, sending limits, spam filtering and whether a free period ends.
- Backups and security: Establish whether backups, restore actions, malware removal and security add-ons cost extra.
- Refund terms: Money-back policies may exclude domains, add-ons, setup fees, dedicated IPs or some managed services. Check the terms for the specific product.
- Region and tax: These figures are US-dollar signals. Select your local storefront and account for currency, tax, data-center choices and support-language availability.
For a like-for-like comparison, calculate the amount due today plus the following 12 months at the renewal rate, then add any domain, email, backup and tax costs that apply. Do not compare a four-year prepaid Hostinger price directly with a one-year introductory offer without showing the commitment.
When to move from shared hosting to a VPS
Upgrade when your application needs root access or persistent services, when resource limits repeatedly constrain normal traffic, or when the cost of lost sales or slow responses makes isolation and predictable capacity more important. Before moving for a temporary slowdown, enable page and object caching, use a CDN, optimize images and database queries, remove inefficient plugins, and ask the host to identify the limiting resource. If demand is structural, a managed VPS can reduce administration; an unmanaged VPS is only a good fit if you can handle server maintenance, security and recovery.
How to migrate a site without avoidable downtime
- Inventory the current site: Record the PHP version, cron jobs, DNS records, email accounts, SSL setup and any application-specific settings.
- Lower DNS TTL in advance: Reduce the time resolvers cache your DNS records before the planned cutover, if your DNS provider allows it.
- Make separate exports: Keep copies of the site files and databases. Do not rely only on a host’s migration tool or a single backup.
- Build and test at the new host: Use a temporary URL or hosts-file override where available. Check forms, redirects, scheduled jobs, login, SSL and ecommerce checkout.
- Freeze content changes for final sync: For a dynamic site, pause new orders or edits as appropriate, then transfer the latest database changes.
- Change DNS only after testing: Update the necessary records, then monitor the site and email while cached DNS entries expire.
- Keep the old service active during verification: Confirm pages, forms, checkout, scheduled jobs and email delivery before cancelling the old host.
Moving from cPanel to hPanel or another custom panel can still be possible, but settings and workflows may not transfer one-to-one. Check what the host’s migration service includes rather than assuming it moves email, DNS and every application configuration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Linux hosting better than Windows hosting?
Neither is universally better. Linux is a common choice for PHP applications such as WordPress; Windows hosting is relevant when software requires ASP.NET, Microsoft SQL Server or other Windows-specific components.
Is Linux hosting good for WordPress?
Yes. WordPress commonly runs on Linux with PHP and a MySQL-compatible database. Choose a plan based on its actual limits, backups, support and workload rather than the operating-system label alone.

Do I need cPanel?
No. cPanel is familiar and widely documented, but providers also offer custom panels. Choose based on your comfort, workflow and migration needs; the control panel does not by itself determine server performance.
Is shared hosting secure?
It can be suitable for ordinary sites, but security depends on the provider’s isolation and maintenance as well as your own updates, passwords, plugins and backups. Check the plan’s security and recovery terms; shared hosting is not the right choice when you require specific infrastructure or audit controls.
Can I run Laravel or Node.js on shared Linux hosting?
Only if the specific provider and plan support the required runtime, versions, SSH access, cron jobs and background processes. Node.js is advertised by Hostinger, but that does not establish that every shared plan supports every deployment pattern. Persistent workers or root-level dependencies usually call for a VPS or application platform.
Can I host multiple websites on one plan?
Some plans allow multiple sites, but the permitted count, storage and shared resource limits vary. Check the exact plan: examples in this guide range from three sites on Hostinger Premium and Namecheap Stellar to 25 on DreamHost Launch.
What happens if I exceed a hosting plan’s resource limits?
The provider’s response depends on its terms and the resource involved. Ask whether it throttles, requests an upgrade or restricts an account, and which CPU, RAM, I/O, process or inode limits apply. A visit estimate is not a substitute for those limits.
Are free domains really free?
Offers in this comparison generally cover an eligible domain for the first year on qualifying plans, not permanent registration. Check eligible extensions, renewal cost and refund exclusions before registering.
Are backups included with Linux hosting?
Not always, and frequency matters. Hostinger Premium and Bluehost Starter list weekly backups; DreamHost Launch lists daily automated backups. InMotion’s inclusion varies by plan, and Namecheap’s listed automated schedule applies to Stellar Plus, so verify the exact recovery terms.
Can I cancel and get a refund?
Possibly, subject to the product’s money-back policy and exclusions. The listed plans include different 30-day or qualifying-plan refund terms; read the current terms for domains, add-ons and other excluded charges before paying.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan I move to another host later?
Usually, but migration effort varies. Keep independent copies of files and databases, retain domain and DNS control, and record email and scheduled-task settings. Panel changes can require recreating settings, and the new host’s migration service may not cover every component.
