Microsoft Raised Xbox Prices Again: What Tariffs Had to Do With It

Microsoft raised U.S. Xbox prices in May 2025 amid tariff and trade-war uncertainty, but it did not explicitly say tariffs caused that increase. The latest confirmed increase, effective August 1, 2026, is officially tied to rising memory, storage, and component costs—not tariffs specifically. Current U.S. recommended prices range from $499.99 for the Series S 512GB to $799.99 for the Series X with a disc drive.

Current U.S. Xbox prices

The following are U.S. recommended retail prices (MSRP), not guaranteed checkout prices. Microsoft’s June 2026 announcement said the new prices took effect worldwide on August 1, but local prices and availability vary. Retailers may discount older stock, bundle products, or charge different amounts.

Model Storage and disc drive October 3, 2025 MSRP Price from August 1, 2026 Status
Xbox Series S 512GB, digital-only $399.99 $499.99 Current lineup
Xbox Series S 1TB, digital-only $449.99 $599.99 Current lineup
Xbox Series X Digital 1TB, digital-only $599.99 $749.99 Current lineup
Xbox Series X 1TB, disc drive $649.99 $799.99 Current lineup
Xbox Series X Galaxy Black Special Edition 2TB, disc drive $799.99 Not stated; Microsoft says the model is being sunset Being discontinued, not merely temporarily out of stock

The 2026 increases were $100 for 512GB models and $150 for 1TB models, according to Microsoft’s June 25, 2026 announcement. Model-by-model U.S. prices were reported by TechCrunch. The 2025 comparison prices come from Microsoft’s October 3, 2025 U.S. price list.

How Xbox prices changed from launch to 2026

The May 2025 increase was one step in a longer sequence, not the only adjustment. Microsoft’s U.S. price lists show these recommended prices for the main configurations:

From August 1, 2026 $499.99 $599.99 $749.99 $799.99 Sunset; no new price stated

The original Series S launched at $299.99 and the original disc-equipped Series X at $499.99 on November 10, 2020, according to the FTC’s Microsoft gaming-market report. By August 2026, the 512GB Series S MSRP was about 67% above its launch price; the disc-equipped 1TB Series X was 60% above the original Series X launch MSRP. Those comparisons span different points in time and, for Series X, do not represent an identical storage configuration throughout. They compare U.S. MSRPs, not what buyers necessarily paid at retail.

Were tariffs the reason for the 2025 increase?

The May 1, 2025 increase came shortly after sweeping U.S. tariff announcements and during intense uncertainty about trade and supply chains. Bloomberg described the move as happening amid the trade war, and the Associated Press covered the increase and Microsoft’s explanation. But Microsoft did not publicly identify tariffs as the cause. Its stated rationale was broader: “market conditions” and rising development costs.

That makes “tariff-era” or “amid tariff uncertainty” more accurate than saying Microsoft confirmed a tariff-driven price hike. The timing and wider trade context support the connection, but they do not establish that tariffs caused every dollar of the increase.

Microsoft’s stated explanation in 2026

For the increase effective August 1, 2026, Microsoft pointed to higher memory and storage costs and a broader components crisis. In its June 25 announcement, Microsoft said console memory and storage prices had risen more than 2.5 times and that it expected another doubling by fall 2027. Those figures are Microsoft’s claims; the announcement did not provide a measurement method or product basket. Microsoft also said consoles are typically sold below manufacturing cost, which should be read as the company’s characterization rather than a universal statement about every console or configuration.

The company’s expectation of further component-cost increases is not an announced future Xbox price hike. It signals uncertainty, not a guaranteed change to retail prices.

Controllers, headsets, and games also saw 2025 changes

Microsoft’s May 1, 2025 U.S. price sheet included accessories as well as consoles. The listed recommended prices were:

  • Xbox Wireless Controller Core: $64.99
  • Xbox Wireless Controller Color: $69.99
  • Special Edition controller: $79.99
  • Limited Edition controller: $89.99
  • Xbox Stereo Headset: $64.99
  • Xbox Wireless Headset: $119.99

These are the post-change prices on Microsoft’s May 1, 2025 U.S. price sheet, not a complete before-and-after comparison.

Microsoft also indicated that some first-party games released during the 2025 holiday season could cost $79.99. Coverage differed on whether this applied broadly or only to selected titles, so it should not be treated as a universal price for all Xbox games. Ars Technica’s coverage and Bloomberg’s report describe the game-price announcement. Microsoft’s 2026 console announcement does not announce a new universal Game Pass increase or a universal increase to game prices.

Does Xbox still make sense at these prices?

The best choice depends on how you play, what you already own, and whether you need a console now. At today’s prices, compare the full cost of hardware, storage, games, subscriptions, and accessories—not just the console’s entry price.

Choose a Series S if low-cost access to the Xbox library matters most

The Series S can suit players who mainly buy digital games or use Game Pass, have a 1080p or 1440p display, or want a second console for a different room. Its trade-offs are lower performance than Series X, no disc drive, and limited storage. In particular, 512GB is the console’s installed capacity, not all space available for games after system software. A large library may require frequent deletions or added storage, which can reduce the apparent savings. At $499.99 for the 512GB model, it is no longer the $300-class entry point it was at launch.

Choose a Series X if you will use its performance or disc drive

The Series X is a stronger fit for buyers with a 4K display, people who want more storage or performance, and players who use physical Xbox games or Blu-ray discs. The disc-equipped model is $799.99, so weigh those benefits against the digital model, competing consoles, and a gaming PC before buying. The digital Series X and Series S cannot play physical discs; owners of Xbox One or other physical game discs should account for that before choosing a digital-only model.

Count Game Pass as a recurring cost, not a free hardware substitute

Game Pass offers a rotating game catalog, with console, PC, cloud access, online multiplayer, discounts, and perks varying by plan and availability. Check the official Game Pass page for current plan details; a dependable full U.S. price table is not established here, so verify the live price before budgeting. A subscription can be worthwhile if you regularly play many included games, but it does not remove the cost of console hardware for local play. Games can leave the catalog, plan catalogs differ, and cloud play depends on supported devices, region, network quality, and plan eligibility. Some online multiplayer features also require a subscription.

Consider waiting if you do not need the console immediately

Waiting can make sense if you are not tied to an Xbox-exclusive game, expect to compare holiday promotions, or want to see how the market develops. Retailers may discount existing inventory or offer bundles, but no price drop is guaranteed. Microsoft’s component-cost warning does not prove that prices will rise again, either.

Ways to reduce the total cost

Check certified-refurbished and used systems

Microsoft says certified-refurbished consoles may be available for up to $100 below MSRP, with models and stock varying. Check the Microsoft Store refurbished listing for the specific model, current price, warranty, and return terms. A used console can cost less, but inspect the controller, included cables, storage behavior, ventilation history, warranty coverage, and return window before treating it as comparable to new hardware.

Compare retailer stock and bundles against MSRP

Microsoft publishes recommended retail prices, not a promise that every seller will charge them. Older stock may be discounted, while scarcity or marketplace sellers can push asking prices above MSRP. Compare the bundle’s contents and the actual checkout total rather than assuming that a bundle or advertised markdown is a saving.

Treat financing as a payment schedule, not a discount

Microsoft says eligible purchases may qualify for interest-free installments through partners, including programs of up to 12 months. Eligibility, region, credit approval, and terms apply. Before using one, compare the cash price, total repayment, late-payment consequences, and return terms; spreading payments does not reduce the console’s cost.

Account for storage before buying the smallest model

If you are considering the 512GB Series S, decide whether you can manage a smaller installed library or need expansion storage. Check Xbox’s accessories page for current compatible options and prices. Expansion can change the total cost, so compare that total with a higher-capacity model rather than evaluating the console price alone.

How to compare Xbox with other platforms

A PlayStation 5 is relevant if you want its games, ecosystem, or a physical-media option; Nintendo Switch 2 is a better comparison for buyers prioritizing Nintendo software and portability, not equivalent performance. A gaming PC offers broader storefront choice and upgradeability, but matching console performance can require a substantially higher initial budget. Cloud gaming may defer buying console hardware, but depends on a supported device, region, connection quality, and the games available through the service.

There is no sound blanket claim that Xbox is cheaper or more expensive than these alternatives without matching the hardware tier, disc capability, storage, bundles, subscriptions, and games a particular buyer needs. Compare current local prices and the complete ownership cost before deciding.
