You can add to Google Play balance by redeeming a Google Play gift card or code, using a cash top-up where Google offers that option, or exchanging Google Play Points for credit. There is no universal bank-account transfer or card-to-balance top-up documented for every country. If you only need to pay for one purchase, you may be able to use an accepted payment method at checkout without adding balance first.
Before redeeming a code, check that you are signed in to the Google Account you want to use and that the card is intended for that account’s Play country and currency. Redeemed balance generally cannot be moved to another account or withdrawn as cash.

What Google Play balance is—and what it is not
Google Play balance is prepaid or promotional credit associated with a Google Account for eligible purchases through Google Play. It is separate from a bank account, Google Pay balance, cash, and a payment card. It is not a general-purpose wallet for paying bills or sending money to another person. Google’s overview of balance and its limitations is at Google Play balance help.
Adding a card or another payment method to Google Play usually lets Google charge that method for eligible purchases; it does not necessarily convert the method into stored Play balance. Payment methods and balance options depend on the country and account. Google lists payment methods for the United States separately, and availability can still vary by user and purchase: accepted payment methods on Google Play.

Before adding credit
- Choose the right account. Check the Google Account shown in Google Play before redeeming. Once credit is applied, it generally cannot be transferred to another account.
- Match country and currency. Gift cards generally must be redeemed in the country and currency where they were purchased, and the Play country must match. Google’s gift-card country and availability rules explain the restrictions.
- Buy from an authorized seller. Keep the receipt and packaging until the code works. Do not share an unused code.
- Know which kind of credit you are using. A gift card, cash top-up and Play Points reward are different routes and are not available to every account in every country.
Redeem a gift card or code on Android
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Tap your profile picture in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions.
- Tap Redeem code.
- Enter the gift-card or gift-code characters, then tap Redeem.
- Review the Google Account that will receive the credit.
- Tap Confirm to apply the code.
Google says codes are typically 16-character combinations of letters and numbers, but some digital codes may have a different format. Follow the code or redemption link provided with an email or digital purchase. Menu labels can differ by app version, language or country. See Google’s Android redemption instructions.
Redeem a gift card or code on a computer
- Go to play.google.com/redeem while signed in to the Google Account that should receive the credit.
- Enter the code and select Redeem.
- Check the account shown, then select Confirm.
You can also enter a code during a purchase: start buying eligible content, open the payment-method selector when it appears, choose Redeem code, and follow the prompts. Google documents both routes in its code redemption help.
Add cash at a participating retailer
Cash top-ups are limited to countries and participating stores where Google offers the service; they are not a universal option or a confirmed general US top-up method. Google’s current instructions include selected markets such as Indonesia, Japan and Mexico. Available stores, amounts and any extra retailer fee depend on the market. Check Google’s cash top-up availability and instructions for your location.

- Open Google Play and tap your profile icon.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Payment methods.
- Tap Add a payment method and select Buy Google Play Credit, if shown.
- Choose an amount and tap Continue.
- Select a participating store. If prompted, enter your name and postal code.
- Tap Get payment code and pay at the selected store using that code.
Google says the balance and transaction email can take up to about five minutes to update after payment. In Indonesia, Google also documents a virtual-account route: choose Menu > Payment methods > Buy Google Play credit, select an amount, then pay using the virtual account number or code through a supported banking app, internet banking or ATM. The banks named in Google’s instructions include BCA, Mandiri, BSI, BRI and Permata.

Find a lost cash payment code
In the Play Store, tap your profile icon and go to Payments & subscriptions > Budget & history > Purchase History. Open the transaction and tap See code. The transaction area may also offer a way to cancel a cash add before it is completed.
Exchange Google Play Points for credit
If Play Points is available to you and you have enough points, you can redeem them for Play credit using the reward options shown in your Play Points account. This exchanges previously earned points; it is not a cash deposit. Reward choices and conversion values vary by country and account, so use the value displayed in your account rather than assuming a universal points-to-currency rate. Check your Google Play balance
On the web, go to play.google.com, select your profile icon, then select Payments & subscriptions and look for Play balance. On Android, look in the Google Play profile and payments area; the exact menu presentation can vary by app version and region.
What Google Play balance can buy
Balance can pay for eligible apps, games, in-app purchases and other digital content offered through Google Play. It may cover some subscriptions or services where Google Play balance is accepted, but eligibility depends on the item, account and market. A purchase can require another payment method, and not every subscription accepts prepaid or promotional credit.

Google says Play balance cannot be used to buy Google Play gift cards or specialty gift cards. Specialty cards may be issued and redeemed by another brand, so check the terms for the specific item. See Google’s gift-card restrictions and safety guidance.

Can you transfer, refund or withdraw Play balance?
Generally, no: prepaid balance, including cash top-ups, and promotional credit are not refundable or transferable, except where required by law or under a specific country or account exception. A redeemed gift-card balance normally stays with the Google Account that redeemed it, and it is not a bank withdrawal. Google’s refund and transfer policy describes the general rules and exceptions.
That is why the account check before tapping Confirm matters. A parent or guardian also should not assume that a family group can use a Google Play gift card as its family payment method; Google says gift cards are not eligible for that purpose. “Invalid code” or code not accepted
- Check each character, including possible confusion between O and 0, and try without spaces.
- Confirm that you are using the intended Google Account and that the Play country matches the card’s country and currency.
- Check whether the code has already been redeemed. Do not keep submitting a code if the redemption completed.
- Keep the receipt and card packaging. If the retailer did not activate a physical card, contact the retailer; for other redemption errors, use Google’s gift-card troubleshooting guidance.
Card bought in another country
A similar-looking currency or a change of account setting does not make a foreign card compatible. Google ties gift-card redemption to country and currency. Changing Play country has separate eligibility and timing rules and does not necessarily move existing balance: see Google’s Play country guidance. A VPN does not change the card’s underlying region requirements.

Balance did not appear
For a cash top-up, allow several minutes, then check Play balance and transaction history. For a gift code, first verify that the redemption completed and that the intended account received it; reopening Google Play or signing back in may help refresh the display. Do not repeatedly redeem the same code. If a digital gift card was never delivered, Google advises that the purchaser may need to contact support about the delivery message or redemption link; see its gift-card help.
Cash payment code is missing
Recover it through Google Play Store > profile icon > Payments & subscriptions > Budget & history > Purchase History, then open the transaction and tap See code. This option applies to a cash-add transaction, not a gift-card redemption.
Someone is asking you to pay with a gift card
Do not send the code. Google Play gift cards are for Google Play purchases, not taxes, bills, bail, jobs, technical support or debt collection. Treat any demand to reveal or photograph an unused code—including a request from someone claiming to be Google support—as a scam warning. Google’s gift-card safety page provides further guidance.
When to use a payment method instead
For a one-time purchase, paying directly at checkout with an accepted card, PayPal, carrier billing or another listed method may be simpler than preloading credit. This charges the chosen method for the purchase rather than necessarily adding to Play balance, and availability varies by country and account. If you need a fixed amount for gifting or budgeting, an authorized gift card is the more direct prepaid option; if you need cash top-up, first confirm Google offers it in your country.
