Before opening or switching a bank account for everyday UPI payments, compare five things: whether the account will link to your registered mobile number, the account’s balance rules and fees, its practical transaction limits, the bank’s support and dispute process, and its response to unauthorised transactions. Check the bank’s current account terms and UPI guidance before you decide; limits, charges and features can change.
What should I check before choosing a new bank for UPI and everyday payments?
Compare at least two banks on the same criteria rather than relying on a “best bank” list. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and Reserve Bank of India (RBI) explain the general rules, but they do not provide a live comparison of every bank’s fees, app reliability or eligibility. Use each bank’s current account schedule of charges, product terms and UPI help pages for the details that apply to you.

Will the account link to UPI smoothly?
UPI needs to find the bank account associated with the mobile number verified in the payment app. NPCI says that if the verified number does not match the number registered with the bank, the account may not be fetched. Check that your number is registered correctly and ask whether the account type you want is supported by the bank and your preferred UPI app. See NPCI’s UPI FAQ for account-linking guidance.
If you are switching accounts, check how the app handles multiple linked accounts and changing the account used for payments. NPCI’s BHIM product information describes switching among linked accounts; availability and details can change, so confirm the current steps in the app you plan to use. Also make sure it supports your routine payment types, such as paying people and merchants or paying bills.

What are the account’s balance rules and charges?
Compare minimum or average balance requirements and the charge applied if you fall below a threshold. Check the current schedule of charges for debit cards and other optional services, too. RBI requires banks to disclose minimum-balance requirements and related charges transparently; see its customer-service and minimum-balance notification.
Do not assume that “zero balance” means every service is free or that all basic savings accounts include identical features. RBI says a Basic Savings Bank Deposit Account (BSBDA) has no minimum balance, while terms for services beyond the prescribed minimum package may be set transparently by the bank. Review the RBI’s BSBDA FAQ and the bank’s own product terms to see what is included and what may cost extra.
Which UPI limits and restrictions apply?
NPCI’s FAQ gives general ceilings, not a promise that every bank, app or transaction will allow the maximum. It lists a normal limit of up to ₹1 lakh per transaction; specified special categories have a ceiling of up to ₹2 lakh, and IPO and Retail Direct Scheme transactions have a ceiling of up to ₹5 lakh. The applicable category and the bank’s own controls matter. Check NPCI’s UPI FAQ and the bank’s current guidance.
Ask about restrictions beyond the per-transaction ceiling, including daily amount or transaction-count limits and any temporary cooling period after registration or a UPI PIN reset. These can depend on the bank, account, app or transaction category. For example, SBI’s published UPI guidance sets out bank-specific limits and cooling-period rules; it is an example, not a rule for all banks.

NPCI says UPI payments are available 24/7 regardless of bank working hours. That describes the service, not uninterrupted access to a particular bank or app: a bank may impose limits, and service issues can still occur.
How can you get help with a pending, failed or incorrect payment?
Before opening an account, find the in-app route for reporting a UPI problem and check how to reach customer care. If you may need in-person assistance, confirm branch access and hours. Look for the bank’s instructions for pending or failed payments and payments credited to the wrong person, so you know what details to provide and how to track a complaint.
NPCI says customers can raise UPI grievances through participating bank apps. For covered failed transactions, RBI rules set turnaround times and compensation requirements; read the RBI notification on failed-transaction turnaround and compensation, dated September 20, 2019. An app’s dispute process and RBI escalation are separate steps: first use the bank or app’s complaint route, then check the relevant RBI process if the bank does not resolve the matter.

Check how to report an unauthorised payment promptly, block or secure access, and receive confirmation that the bank has logged your report. RBI directions require banks to take immediate steps to prevent further unauthorised transactions after a customer reports one. The RBI customer-protection directions on unauthorised electronic banking transactions explain the framework.
Keep your UPI PIN private. NPCI’s advice is direct: “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone.” A bank’s reporting and recovery process is worth checking before you need it.
Where can you escalate a complaint that the bank has not resolved?
Check the bank’s grievance stages and the applicable RBI escalation route before you open the account. As of October 7, 2026, RBI’s FAQ says the Reserve Bank–Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026 took effect on July 1, 2026, replacing the 2021 scheme for new matters. Confirm current eligibility and filing steps in the RBI’s 2026 Integrated Ombudsman Scheme FAQ rather than relying on older descriptions of the 2021 scheme.
A practical side-by-side comparison
Use a simple checklist and fill it with information from each bank’s current documents and support pages. If a term is unclear, ask the bank to confirm it before you open the account.
