Prediction markets trade contracts whose payouts depend on specified future outcomes; crypto exchanges trade digital assets or derivatives linked to their prices. A contract about Bitcoin’s price does not give you Bitcoin, and funding a contract with crypto does not change what you own. The key is to identify the instrument, its settlement terms and the venue’s rules before comparing platforms.
What you are actually trading
| Question | Prediction market | Crypto exchange |
|---|---|---|
| What is traded? | A contract tied to a defined event or outcome, such as yes/no, a choice among outcomes, or a price range. | On spot markets, a crypto asset. On derivatives markets, a contract that references a crypto price; it may be cash-settled rather than deliver tokens. |
| What does the price mean? | The contract’s value, shaped by participants’ expectations, order flow, liquidity and contract mechanics. It is not a guaranteed forecast. | For spot, the market price of the asset. For a derivative, the value of the crypto-linked contract under its terms. |
| What do you hold after trading? | A position that settles according to the event contract’s rules. A Bitcoin-linked event contract alone does not confer ownership of Bitcoin. | A spot purchase typically acquires the asset, subject to the venue’s custody and transfer arrangements. A derivative gives exposure defined by its contract, not necessarily the coin. |
These are category-level distinctions. Products and venues vary, so the label “prediction market” or “crypto exchange” is not enough to tell you the terms.
How prediction-market prices and payouts work
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) explains that a contract price reflects traders’ perceived probability of the event outcome. In its illustrative rain example, a “yes” position priced at 70 cents and a “no” position at 30 cents indicate market prices—not certainty that rain is 70% likely. If a position resolves correctly, it receives the contract payout; the trader’s profit is that payout minus the amount paid to enter, before applicable fees. The CFTC notes that participants may sometimes trade out before settlement, but whether that is possible and at what price depends on the venue and available liquidity. CFTC, Understanding Prediction Markets and Event Contracts.
Why settlement wording matters
For an event contract, the exact resolution rule is central: check what outcome counts, the named source of truth, the measurement window, the expiration time, payout and how edge cases are handled. A quoted price elsewhere may not match the official settlement value if the contract specifies a particular index, calculation or results source.

One service-specific example: Coinbase says its displayed prediction markets are operated by Kalshi. Its documentation describes rules that identify the controlling source and gives a crypto-price contract example using a 60-second average of the CF Benchmarks Real Time Index before expiration; it also cites official league results for sports contracts. These details apply to those contracts, not to prediction markets generally. Coinbase’s page describes a U.S. product for residents except Nevada, with purchases using settled USD or USDC and fees shown at order confirmation. Risks: different mechanisms, no risk-free option
Prediction-market risks
- Outcome risk: If the contract resolves against your position, you can lose the amount invested.
- Liquidity and exit risk: There may be too few buyers or sellers to exit at a desired price before settlement, even if the platform supports early trading.
- Rule and resolution risk: A result that seems obvious under everyday wording may be treated differently by the contract’s defined source, time window or edge-case rules.
Crypto spot and derivatives risks
- Price volatility: Crypto asset prices can move sharply. With spot holdings, custody and account security also matter.
- Leverage and margin: Leveraged futures can magnify gains and losses; positions may require more margin or be closed under the venue’s rules.
- Contract mechanics: Derivatives can use their own index, settlement and margin terms, and may not deliver tokens.

Regulation depends on product, venue and jurisdiction
In the United States, the CFTC says registered event-contract exchanges and intermediaries have obligations that include registration, rules, surveillance and examination. That does not mean every service described as a prediction market or every contract is covered identically; check the entity and product. Crypto spot markets and crypto derivatives also should not be treated as one regulatory category. The CFTC describes limited oversight of commodity cash markets alongside anti-fraud and manipulation authority, while derivatives have a separate framework. Other legal questions may depend on the product and jurisdiction.
A joint statement from SEC Chair Paul S. Atkins and Acting CFTC Chair Caroline D. Pham on September 5, 2025, notes that securities and commodity-derivatives regimes have different statutory jurisdictions and discusses coordination across securities, commodity derivatives, spot crypto products and event contracts. It is context for product-specific oversight, not evidence that the agencies established one unified framework. This article describes U.S. sources and is not legal, tax or investment advice. A practical checklist before you trade
- Name the instrument: Is it a spot asset, a crypto derivative or an event contract?
- Read the terms: For an event contract, identify the outcome definition, resolution source, time window and payout. For a derivative, inspect its index, settlement and margin rules.
- Understand the position: Does the trade give you an asset, or only a contract-based exposure?
- Check costs and exits: Review fees, liquidity and whether the venue allows you to close before settlement or expiration.
- Verify the venue and eligibility: Confirm the responsible legal entity, applicable registration and whether the product is available to you where you live.
- Assess loss exposure and custody: Understand what you can lose, whether leverage applies, and who controls any assets held on the platform.
How prediction markets fit alongside crypto
Prediction markets have a history in the United States predating today’s consumer trading platforms. The CFTC timeline identifies 1988 as the creation year of the Iowa Presidential Stock Market, an experimental academic program, and 2004 as the year it approved the first designated contract market offering binary options. The CFTC says prediction markets have been regulated by it since 2004. Those dates provide background, not a measure of current market size.
