How to Protect Your NEAR Wallet From Phishing and Malicious Approvals

Protect a NEAR wallet by checking domains and signing prompts, limiting access-key permissions, and knowing how NFT approval revocation differs from disconnecting a dApp.

Protect a NEAR wallet by verifying the site before connecting, checking every wallet prompt before signing, and limiting the permissions a dApp receives. If you suspect a problem, first identify what was exposed: disconnecting a website is not the same as revoking an on-chain access key or an NFT approval. If your seed phrase or a full-access key may be compromised, move remaining assets to a fresh account; revoking an NFT approval alone will not secure the account.

Know what a NEAR wallet connection does—and does not—authorize

Three different mechanisms are easy to confuse:

  • A website connection lets a dApp interact with a wallet interface. Disconnecting may end that session, but it should not be treated as removing an on-chain key or NFT approval.
  • A function-call access key is an on-chain key that can be limited to certain contract calls. NEAR’s NEAR injected-wallet specification discusses dApps requesting these constrained permissions and says the request should require the user’s explicit approval. Not every connection uses one, and a limited key still needs careful review.
  • An NFT approval is permission associated with an NFT contract and token. NEP-178 defines methods for revoking such approvals; it is not a general-purpose token allowance checker.

These distinctions determine the right response: disconnect a site to end a connection, remove a suspicious key through an appropriate key-management workflow, and revoke an NFT approval through the relevant contract’s supported method.

Check a site and its signing request before you approve

  1. Open the dApp through a bookmark you created or a project channel you independently verified. Check the full domain for misspellings or lookalike characters, and do not assume a sponsored search result is genuine.
  2. Never enter your seed phrase into a dApp, support chat, or “verification” form. A normal dApp interaction should not require your recovery phrase.
  3. Read the wallet prompt before signing. Check the account, receiver or contract, method, amount, and requested permission. If you did not initiate the request or cannot explain what it does, reject it.
  4. When a wallet offers a restricted function-call key, check which receiver and methods it permits and whether it includes a gas allowance. Choose only the scope needed for the task rather than granting broader authority.

NEAR’s technical specification describes constrained function-call keys as a dApp permission mechanism, not a guarantee that a request is safe. A wallet prompt deserves the same scrutiny even when the site appears familiar.

How to revoke a NEAR NFT approval

NEP-178 specifies two relevant contract methods: nft_revoke revokes one approval for a token, while nft_revoke_all clears approvals for that token. The method must be available through the relevant NFT contract or a wallet/interface that supports it; the standard does not establish one universal NEAR approvals dashboard.

  1. Identify the NFT contract and token, then use a trusted wallet or contract interface for that collection. Do not follow a revoke link sent in an unsolicited message.
  2. Review the transaction details and ensure the action targets the intended token and approval. Use nft_revoke for a particular approved account, or nft_revoke_all to clear approvals on that token.
  3. After signing, verify the resulting approval state on-chain using a trusted contract or explorer interface. Do not assume that disconnecting the marketplace or dApp changed the contract approval.

Revoking an NFT approval addresses that approval only. It does not remove access keys, repair a leaked seed phrase, or secure other assets affected by a compromised account.

Remove a suspicious access key and respond to a compromise

If you suspect a NEAR access key is unsafe, use the wallet’s key-management controls or another trusted, independently verified workflow to remove it. Where the wallet supports restricted keys, check the receiver, methods, and any allowance, and remove keys you no longer need. Wallet interfaces and available controls vary, so confirm the key scope and resulting on-chain state rather than assuming a website disconnect removed it.

If your seed phrase or a full-access key may have been exposed, treat the account as compromised. On a clean device, create a fresh account and move remaining assets there. Removing one NFT approval or a restricted function-call key is not a substitute for replacing an exposed recovery phrase or full-access credential.

What a hardware wallet can—and cannot—do

A hardware wallet can reduce exposure of private keys to a compromised computer, but it cannot decide whether a transaction or approval is malicious. If you approve a harmful request after misreading the details, hardware storage does not make that approval safe.

Practical permission check

What you are checking What to verify What it does not mean
Website connection That the domain is genuine and the session is one you intended to start. Disconnecting does not, by itself, revoke an on-chain key or NFT approval.
Function-call access key Allowed receiver and methods, and any gas allowance; remove keys you no longer need. A restricted key is not automatically harmless, and not every wallet connection uses one.
NFT approval Which contract, token, and approved account are involved; revoke and verify the state. Revoking the approval does not fix an exposed seed phrase or full-access key.
Hardware wallet Whether your selected wallet supports the device and how it presents transaction details. It protects key custody, not your judgment about whether to approve a request.
