Sometimes—but a state’s “no income tax” label does not tell you whether your household will spend less overall. The move may reduce state tax on some income, while higher property or sales taxes, housing costs, or other local expenses offset the difference. To find out, compare your own income, housing, spending, and likely costs in specific places for the same year.
What “no income tax” does—and does not—mean
In its 2026 State Tax Competitiveness Index, the Tax Foundation lists Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Wyoming as states with no individual income tax. New Hampshire eliminated its interest and dividends tax on January 1, 2025, so older lists that describe that tax as current are out of date.
Washington needs separate treatment. The Tax Foundation says the state does not tax wage income, but it does tax certain capital gains. Its 2026 Washington profile, updated October 5, 2026, reports a graduated 9.9% rate on gains above $1 million. That profile also ranks Washington 45th overall in the Foundation’s 2026 index. The rate and rank are the Foundation’s reported figures; the rank describes its tax-system methodology, not how much a particular household will save.
These distinctions matter if your income is not just wages. A household with substantial investment gains should check the tax treatment of those gains, as well as wage income, in each place it is considering. Verify applicable state rules for the relevant tax year before relying on a general state label.

Why a lower income-tax bill may not mean lower total costs
State income tax is only one part of a household budget. A move can change property taxes, sales and excise taxes, housing costs, and other regular expenses. The effect depends on how you earn and spend money and whether you rent or own.
- Homeowners and prospective buyers: Compare property taxes and the cost of the home you would actually buy or keep. A statewide rate or average cannot tell you the bill on a specific property.
- Renters: Compare rents and other housing expenses in the particular neighborhoods you would consider. State-level price figures cannot predict a lease quote.
- Households with substantial spending: Check sales and relevant excise taxes against what you actually buy; a rate alone does not show the household’s total tax cost.
- Retirees and investors: Identify the income types you receive and check whether the states treat them differently. Washington’s capital-gains tax is one example of why a wage-income exemption may not answer every income-tax question.
- Anyone changing jobs or routines: Include credible estimates for any likely changes in salary, commuting, insurance, and other recurring costs in the places being compared.
There is no universal savings amount established by the available state rankings or aggregate tax estimates. Your result depends on your current and prospective locations, income types, housing, spending, and move date.

How to compare your current location with a destination
Use the same household assumptions and time period for each place. A useful comparison includes both taxes and ordinary location costs rather than treating a state tax label as the outcome.
- Set the comparison period and household facts. Use an annual budget for a specific tax year. List expected income by type, where you expect to live, whether you will rent or own, and your spending pattern.
- Estimate income taxes by income type. Compare state and relevant local taxes that apply to your wages, investment income, or other income. For Washington, account for the distinction between wage income and certain capital gains.
- Estimate property taxes and housing costs. If you own or plan to buy, use the likely property and location rather than a broad state average. If renting, compare rents for the housing you would realistically choose.
- Estimate sales and excise taxes against your spending. Apply relevant taxes to your household’s likely purchases and use, rather than assuming a rate affects every household equally.
- Add other recurring location costs. Include credible local estimates for expenses such as insurance and commuting, and account for any expected salary change.
- Compare the totals, then check move-year rules. A first year that includes a move may not match a full year in either state. Check the current official tax rules for both states and your actual move date; consult a qualified tax professional if residency, investment income, or a part-year return makes the result uncertain.
This is a household budget comparison, not a tax return. The sources cited here do not establish part-year filing rules for every state pair, so do not assume that a full-year estimate settles the move-year calculation.

Use price data and tax rankings for context, not as a forecast
The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis’ Regional Price Parities by State and Metro Area measure price levels across states and metropolitan areas for a given year as a percentage of the national level. The 2024 figures, released February 19, 2026, put California at 110.7, Hawaii at 110.0, and New Jersey at 108.8; Arkansas was 86.9, Mississippi 87.0, and Iowa and Oklahoma 87.8. These are price-level measures, not estimates of a household’s tax savings or a quote for a particular home or shopping basket.
Housing-rent parities illustrate why the detail can matter: the BEA reports California’s 2024 housing-rent RPP at 154.3 and West Virginia’s at 54.2. Those figures compare price levels; they do not mean every rental in California costs a set amount or that every renter in West Virginia pays less. For a decision, use local housing quotes and a realistic household budget alongside state or metro price context.

Tax rankings also answer narrower questions than “Will I save?” The Tax Foundation’s 2026 index compares tax-system competitiveness under its methodology. Its separate state and local tax-burden estimates cover calendar year 2022 and aggregate estimated burdens. That report distinguishes legal collections from economic incidence, allocating some taxes to people economically affected outside the state collecting them. It says the figures are not individual taxpayer estimates and do not include compliance costs, economic-efficiency losses, or the value of public services received. Neither a state burden rate nor a ranking can be multiplied by your income to produce a personal forecast.

A January 28, 2026 analysis from the White House Council of Economic Advisers, The Economic Impact of State Income Tax Elimination, models income-tax phase-outs using two specified approaches to replacing revenue: broadening the sales-tax base alone, and broadening the base while limiting spending growth. It reports modeled average-state outcomes including 1% to 1.6% higher GDP and 16% to 19% more new startups in its analysis. These are conditional model results for policy scenarios, not measured savings for a household that moves. They cannot replace the location-by-location budget comparison.

- ULTRA-STRONG 200LB LOAD CAPACITY — Independently tested to support heavy-duty moves. Our signature wrap-around handles encircle the entire bag from bottom to top, creating a structural "cradle" that supports weight from the base. Combined with reinforced stitching, these bags won't snap or tear, even when packed with heavy linens, books, or kitchenware.
- THE SMARTER BOX ALTERNATIVE — Why buy expensive, bulky moving boxes that end up in the trash? One 24-gallon HOMESURE bag provides the same volume as a large box but is far easier to carry over the shoulder. When empty, all 8 bags fold down into a compact stack, saving you a massive amount of storage space in your closet or car trunk.
- COLLEGE DORM MOVE-IN READY — Save time and car space on move-in day. One 24-gallon HOMESURE bag is a dorm room lifesaver. To visualize the space: it fits 2 Twin XL comforters and 1 mattress pad, OR 6 standard pillows, OR 30+ sneakers and an entire semester’s worth of sweaters. It’s the ultimate heavy-duty solution for carrying everything from the trunk to the dorm room.
- INSTANT CONTENT IDENTIFICATION — Stop the "guessing game" on moving day. Each tote features a clear plastic tag pocket. Simply slide in a label to identify "Master Bedroom" or "Garage Toys" in seconds. This small design detail saves hours of unzipping and searching, making your organization system professional and efficient.
- PRO-GRADE PROTECTION — Crafted from high-density, water-resistant woven fabric with smooth #5 dual zippers. These aren't flimsy one-move bags; they are designed for years of reuse. Whether it's light rain during transit or long-term storage in a dusty attic, your clothes and linens stay pristine and protected.
When the move is more likely to work financially
A move is more promising on tax grounds when the income tax you would otherwise owe is substantial and the destination’s other taxes and living costs do not absorb the difference. But that is a question to test with your figures, not a conclusion that follows from the destination’s label.
Quick Recap
- Compare a specific origin and destination, not a state ranking with your current bill.
- Use the income types, housing choice, and spending pattern your household actually expects.
- Check current rules for both locations and the tax year that includes the move.
- Keep estimates and known amounts distinct; a statewide price measure is not a local quote.
