Your Bitcoin break-even sell price is the price at which the cash you receive after selling fees equals what you spent to buy the Bitcoin. To calculate it, use the BTC actually credited to your account, your total cash outlay, and the sell fee that will apply. The simple two-fee formula works only when the buy fee is deducted from the cash set aside for the purchase.
Use the formula that matches how your fees are charged
For a buy fee deducted from your quote-currency budget and a percentage sell fee, calculate:
Break-even sell price = total cash outlay ÷ [BTC acquired × (1 − sell fee rate)]
If your entire cash budget is the outlay, and there are no other costs, this simplifies to:

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Break-even sell price = buy price ÷ [(1 − buy fee rate) × (1 − sell fee rate)]
Enter fee rates as decimals: 0.1% is 0.001. This simplified version assumes the buy fee comes out of the cash budget, reducing the amount available to buy BTC. It also assumes percentage fees on both trade legs and no other costs.

Example: 0.1% fee on each leg
Suppose you spend $1,000 at a Bitcoin price of $50,000, with a 0.1% buy fee deducted from that budget. The fee leaves $999 to buy BTC, so you receive 0.01998 BTC. If the sell fee is also 0.1%, the break-even price is $1,000 ÷ [0.01998 × 0.999], or about $50,100.30 per BTC. The 0.1% rates here are illustrative calculator inputs, not a universal exchange fee. Your result depends on the rates and fee treatment for your trade. Coinmarketfees’ Bitcoin calculator likewise frames break-even as recovering the amount paid after both fees.
When the simple formula does not fit
Use actual transaction values when a buy fee is charged on top of the order, withheld from the BTC received, or paid in another asset—or when the venue’s displayed price includes a spread rather than a separate fee. The general formula uses your actual cash outlay and BTC credited, so it does not depend on a particular fee convention.

Calculate from your actual trade amounts
- Find your total cash outlay. Include the purchase amount and any costs you want the sale to recover. Decide whether you are recovering only the purchase or also costs such as a transfer or withdrawal fee.
- Find the BTC actually credited. Use the filled order or account transaction record, not just the amount you intended to buy.
- Get the sell fee rate that applies to your planned sale. Use the current order preview or fee schedule for your account and order.
- Divide your cash outlay by the BTC remaining after the percentage sell fee. In formula form: break-even sell price = cash outlay ÷ [BTC held × (1 − sell fee rate)].
As a cross-check, estimated net sale proceeds are BTC held × sell price × (1 − sell fee rate). Subtract any fixed costs included in your target, then set the result equal to the cash outlay you want to recover.
Choose the fee rates for your actual order
Fees can vary by venue, order type, 30-day trading volume, account tier, and whether you pay fees with the exchange’s own token. A market order generally uses the taker rate. A limit order receives maker treatment only if it adds liquidity and is filled that way. Check the trade preview or the venue’s current fee schedule; there is no single rate that applies to every Bitcoin trade.

When comparing two venues or order routes, compare the applicable maker or taker rate, fees on both legs, the currency or asset used to pay each fee, any account-tier or fee-token adjustment, and the BTC and cash values shown in the order preview. A displayed spot price may not equal your execution price: spread and slippage can affect the realized cost, and their size depends on the specific trade.

This calculation answers a cash-flow question: what sale price would return your chosen outlay after trading fees? It does not determine whether a sale creates a taxable gain or loss. For U.S. federal tax purposes, the IRS generally calculates gain or loss by comparing adjusted basis with the amount realized. Purchased digital-asset basis includes purchase cost and qualifying acquisition fees; transaction costs allocable to a disposition can reduce the amount realized. The details depend on the taxpayer, transaction, and applicable rules. See the IRS virtual-currency FAQs, the IRS digital-asset FAQs (the relevant FAQ section was added December 15, 2025), and the final regulations in Internal Revenue Bulletin 2024-31. A fee-adjusted trading break-even price does not, by itself, establish that there is no taxable gain.
