eBay’s removal of domestic private-seller fees in Germany and the UK may make it easier for individuals to list watches, but the available evidence does not show that either change increased watch listings, altered watch prices or shifted watch-buyer demand. eBay has reported growth in Germany’s broader consumer-to-consumer marketplace; those company figures are not watch-market results.
What changed for private sellers in Germany and the UK?
The changes apply to domestic private selling, not every seller, service or transaction on eBay. Their scope depends on where the seller is based, the marketplace used, the delivery destination and whether the seller is private or a business.

The UK change is for private sellers, not businesses. A person selling watches as a business should check the business-seller fee schedule rather than assume the private-seller policy applies. In Germany, eBay likewise describes a domestic private-selling policy, not a promise that every transaction or optional service is free.
Could lower fees mean more watches for sale?
It is plausible. If a private seller keeps more of a sale price, listing a watch may become more worthwhile, particularly for lower-priced pieces where a fee can take a noticeable share of the proceeds. A larger pool of sellers could give buyers more choice. That is a mechanism, not evidence that it happened in the watch category.

eBay’s March 2024 report on Germany said C2C volume grew more than the company had expected after domestic private selling became free. It described several hundred million euros in additional volume relative to expectations, more than 20% growth in private listings and double-digit growth in active private sellers. eBay also said more than 250,000 sellers began buying on the platform after the change. These are eBay-reported, broad-market measures; the company did not isolate the fee change as the sole cause or report these figures specifically for watches. See eBay’s Germany results report.
When it announced the UK change, eBay CEO Jamie Iannone described the German initiative as lowering barriers to C2C selling and improving inventory breadth and depth. He said, “C2C sellers make our marketplace more vibrant by bringing some of the most unique, hard-to-find, and well-priced inventory.” That is eBay’s explanation of its strategy, not an independent measurement of watch selection or prices. The company’s stated goal was to make more distinctive C2C inventory available, as explained in its UK policy announcement.

What do the sources show about watches specifically?
They do not establish that the fee changes increased watch listings, changed completed-sale prices or shifted demand for watches. Nor do they establish that any general marketplace growth reported by eBay was concentrated in watches. Without category-specific listings, transaction or price data, claims that the policies caused a watch-market boom—or had no effect—go beyond the evidence.
A 2023 WatchPro report said searches for luxury watches on eBay rose 31% in 2021. That figure predates the UK policy, announced in 2024, and does not measure the effect of either fee change. It is historical context, not proof of a policy-driven rise in watch interest. WatchPro also reported that eBay UK’s Authenticity Guarantee covered watches priced at £1,500 or more and described checks by independent watch-industry experts. Because that eligibility figure is from 2023 trade reporting, sellers should verify current terms directly with eBay rather than rely on it as today’s threshold. What should a watch seller check before listing?
The headline fee change is only one part of the cost and eligibility picture. Before listing, check the rules that apply to your own transaction:
- Seller status and location: Confirm that you qualify as a private seller in the country and marketplace where you plan to list. Business sellers should use the applicable business terms.
- Delivery destination: Domestic free selling does not necessarily cover an international transaction. For UK private sellers, eBay’s help page states that a 3% international fee applies when the delivery address is outside the UK; check the live page for current terms.
- Listing allowance and extras: Check your free-listing allowance and whether any optional upgrade, promotion or other service adds a charge.
- Watch protections and terms: If authentication eligibility or another buyer-protection feature matters to your sale, verify the current requirements with eBay. A past reported price threshold is not a substitute for current terms.
- Net proceeds: Factor in shipping, packaging, any optional services and the amount you expect to receive. A zero domestic selling fee does not mean every cost associated with a watch sale is zero.
Does eBay’s planned UK buyer fee change the picture?
In an October 2024 corporate post, eBay’s CEO said the company planned to introduce a buyer-facing fee in the UK in early 2025 alongside buyer enhancements. That was a plan stated at the time, not confirmation of a fee currently charged. Buyers should check eBay’s present checkout terms rather than infer current charges from the announcement.
