For a U.S. account, sign in to your bank or credit union’s official website or mobile app, select the account you need, and open its account details or routing information. Confirm that the number is meant for your specific payment—direct deposit, ACH, checks, and wires may use different instructions.

Find the number in online banking

  1. Open your bank or credit union’s official app, or type its known website address into your browser, then sign in.

  2. Select the checking or savings account involved in the payment. Routing details are account-specific at some institutions.

  3. Look for Account details, Account information, or Routing and account numbers. Labels vary: Santander, for example, directs customers to select an account and open “More Info” or “Account Details,” while U.S. Bank says to select an account from the dashboard.

Make sure it is the right routing number

A U.S. ABA routing number has nine digits and identifies a financial institution; an account number identifies your particular account. A debit-card number is different from both. Direct deposit and many ACH setups typically ask for the routing number and account number, not the debit-card number.

The number can depend on where an account was opened and, at some institutions, when. Bank of America, for example, says routing numbers can vary by the state where the account was opened. A generic bank-number list may therefore show a number that does not apply to your account.

The number you need can also depend on the payment method. A bank may give separate instructions or numbers for ACH/electronic payments, paper checks, and domestic wires. Do not assume a check or ACH number is the correct number for a wire; follow the bank’s wire instructions for the specific transaction.

Other ways to check

Look at a personal check

If you have a check for the same account, the routing number is the leftmost sequence of digits along the bottom. The ABA says it is followed by the account number and then the check number. Use this as a reference, but verify with your bank if the number is for a wire or another transaction with separate instructions.

Contact your bank or credit union

Ask which routing number applies to your account and the payment you are making. Use the institution’s official contact details or secure messaging, especially if online banking does not make the intended use clear.

Use the ABA lookup as a cross-check

The American Bankers Association’s routing-number lookup can help find or validate a routing number. It does not establish which number your bank requires for a particular account or transaction, so confirm that with the institution.
