Argentina’s construction stocks move with more than building activity. Demand and cement volumes matter, but prices, product mix, energy and freight costs, inflation accounting, exchange rates, financing and company-specific risks can push reported earnings—and share prices—in different directions. A useful way to monitor the sector is to pair construction indicators with issuer-level operating and financial results, then assess ownership and trading risks separately.
Which forces move construction stocks?
Construction companies are exposed to a chain of related signals, not a single measure of activity. Loma Negra, an Argentine cement and construction-materials group listed as LOMA on both the NYSE and BYMA, provides a useful example. Its 2Q26 filing covers cement, masonry cement and lime, concrete, aggregates and railroad segments, and says its operations are conducted in Argentina, with exports not significant. That makes local construction conditions especially relevant to its business, though one issuer cannot represent every construction-related stock.

- Demand: Residential building, infrastructure and broader economic conditions influence demand for construction materials. Loma Negra’s 2025 annual filing identifies project delays or cancellations, including public and private work, as risks to results.
- Volumes and realization: Industry dispatches and a company’s own volumes show how much product is moving; sales and realized prices indicate how much revenue those volumes generate.
- Costs and margins: Energy, freight and other costs, as well as the mix of products sold, affect how much revenue remains after operating costs.
- Macro and financing: Inflation, exchange-rate movements, debt and interest affect reported results and the cost or availability of financing.
- Company and market risks: Ownership developments, governance, capital structure and trading conditions can matter independently of construction demand.
These factors can diverge. Shipments may recover while margins weaken, or operating performance may improve while financing and accounting items weigh on net income. For that reason, compare operating indicators with financing and accounting results rather than treating a single earnings figure as a readout of sector demand.
What should be on a construction-demand dashboard?
Use several indicators because they measure different stages of activity and can point in different directions. Loma Negra’s 2025 annual filing discusses construction activity, building permits, employment and industry cement dispatches; its 2Q26 presentation and filing provide company-level volumes.

| Signal | What it helps show | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| INDEC construction activity indicator | Construction activity as captured by the national statistical measure. | Compare its direction with permits, dispatches and company volumes. A broad activity measure is not the same as sales for any one issuer. |
| Building-permit area | Authorized building activity, which can offer a signal about potential future work. | A permit is not proof that a project is funded, starts on schedule or buys materials in the period measured. |
| Industry cement dispatches | Industry-level movement of cement. | Check the reporting period and whether figures are issuer-reported industry data or an original industry release. Industry movement need not match an individual company’s volumes. |
| Company dispatches and segment volumes | The issuer’s own product movement and activity across its businesses. | Compare volumes with revenue, costs and segment results; higher volume alone does not establish stronger profitability. |
| Public-works funding and execution | Whether announced or tendered infrastructure activity is translating into funded, active projects. | Distinguish budgets, announcements and tenders from actual execution and resulting materials demand. |
| Formal sector employment | A separate indicator of labor conditions in construction. | Read it alongside activity and project data; it does not directly measure cement sales or company earnings. |
Loma Negra’s filing reported that authorized building-permit surface was down 6.2% year over year in December 2025 and formal sector employment was down 0.3%. The filing attributed both figures to INDEC; they are presented here as company-reported disclosures, not independently verified quotations from the original INDEC releases. The same filing reported industry cement dispatches down approximately 0.4% year over year in 1Q26. Treat that as the issuer’s report of industry data, not as an independently verified series.
The filing’s account of quarterly industry dispatch comparisons for 2025 was mixed: increases in the first two quarters, a small decline in the third and a small increase in the fourth. That variation is a reminder to compare like periods and avoid turning a single month or quarter into a trend without corroborating measures.

How do prices, product mix and costs change the earnings picture?
Once demand indicators establish what may be happening to activity, check whether the company is converting volume into profitable sales. Compare dispatches with revenue, cost of sales, gross profit and segment results. A shift in the products sold, realized prices or operating costs can make financial performance diverge from volume trends.
Loma Negra’s 2Q26 results release reported quarterly net revenue of AR$238,053 million and net profit of AR$7,043 million. These are nominal peso figures for that quarter, not inflation-adjusted comparisons by themselves. Its statements present cost, gross-profit and finance lines separately, so revenue and net profit should not be used alone to infer either the source of a change or the strength of underlying construction demand.

Why do inflation, exchange rates and finance lines matter?
Argentina’s inflation and currency conditions can complicate comparisons across reporting periods. Read a company’s peso figures alongside its inflation-accounting disclosures, monetary-position result, exchange differences, debt and interest. Check the accounting basis and period before comparing nominal results across companies or quarters.
Holcim Argentina’s first-half 2026 results illustrate why operating and net outcomes can tell different stories. The company reported net sales of AR$270,016 million, an operating loss of AR$44,500 million and a net loss of AR$19,415 million. Its release attributed a financial gain partly to the net monetary position. These issuer-reported first-half figures do not make net income a simple proxy for construction demand; operating and financial results need to be read separately.

Construction-material suppliers depend on projects becoming active demand, not merely being proposed. Track budget allocations, funding, tendering and actual execution separately. Loma Negra’s 2025 annual filing describes the cessation of public-works financing as a policy measure and identifies reduced financing, interruptions and delays as risks to construction demand and business performance. Private projects can also be delayed or canceled, so a public-works indicator alone is not a complete demand picture.
How can ownership and trading risks change the stock outcome?
A company’s shares can face risks that have little to do with cement demand. Loma Negra’s 2025 annual filing warned that uncertainty around a sale procedure could affect ownership and create volatility in its ordinary shares and ADSs. That disclosure establishes a risk identified in the filing; it does not establish the procedure’s status as of October 2026. Investors following the company should consult current company and securities filings for developments affecting ownership, control, capital structure and the securities themselves.
How should investors compare construction-materials companies?
Compare companies on a like-for-like basis and keep operating performance distinct from financing and ownership risks. A practical checklist is:
- Volume: Compare cement and related product volume growth over matching periods.
- Revenue quality: Assess prices realized and product mix alongside volume, rather than assuming more dispatches automatically mean stronger sales.
- Operating performance: Compare segment results, margins and cost pressures, including energy and freight where disclosed.
- Balance-sheet exposure: Review debt, interest and currency exposure together with inflation-accounting and financial-result disclosures.
- Demand sources: Consider exposure to private building and public projects, and distinguish project announcements from funded execution.
- Issuer-specific risks: Review ownership, governance, capital structure and trading disclosures separately from sector conditions.
Do not compare nominal peso amounts as if they were directly equivalent unless the periods, accounting basis and inflation restatement are aligned. For statistics attributed to INDEC by an issuer filing, consult the original statistical release before treating the number as an official INDEC figure.
