Why Trump’s Paper Wealth Rose About $1 Billion After the July 2024 Assassination Attempt

Trump’s estimated stake in Trump Media gained about $1 billion in paper value during trading on July 15, 2024. Here’s why that was not cash or a settled measure of his net worth.

Donald Trump did not collect $1 billion in cash after the July 13, 2024, assassination attempt. On the next trading day, July 15, Trump Media & Technology Group shares surged, raising the estimated market value of his roughly 60% stake by about $1 billion at an intraday price point, according to The Guardian. The shares later fell back, so the figure describes a temporary mark-to-market gain—not money realized from a sale or a definitive measure of his net worth.

What happened to Trump’s estimated wealth?

The headline refers to the change in the quoted market value of Trump’s Trump Media shares on Monday, July 15, 2024, the first trading day after the shooting at a campaign rally on July 13. The Guardian reported that Trump owned about 60% of Trump Media and that the stake was worth about $3.8 billion at Friday’s close. As the stock rose on Monday, the paper value of that holding increased by roughly $1 billion.

That is an estimate based on multiplying the share price by the reported stake. It is not evidence that Trump sold shares, received cash, or had $1 billion added to his bank accounts. A large block of shares also cannot necessarily be sold at the quoted price without affecting the price itself.

Why reports gave different stock gains

Trump Media shares moved sharply during the session, so reports using different observation times and baselines described different gains. The Guardian reported a Friday, July 12 close of $30.89, a Monday intraday high of $46.27, and a Monday close of $40.58. The Associated Press described a rise of more than 31% on the first trading day after the attempt. Those figures are not interchangeable: an intraday high captures a different moment from the closing price, and percentage descriptions depend on the chosen reference point.

Monday, July 15 close $40.58 Closing price reported by The Guardian after the shares had retreated from the intraday high.

The roughly $1 billion estimate is tied to the rise in the value of Trump’s stake during trading; it should not be read as a permanent increase in his wealth. The cited coverage does not establish a precise personal balance sheet or a current net-worth figure.

What may have driven the rally

Contemporaneous market observers connected the move to political sentiment, but the reporting does not establish that the shooting alone mechanically caused the full price change. The Guardian reported that traders saw the event as potentially improving Trump’s perceived odds in the November election, and considered whether a Trump victory could bring more users to Truth Social. Neil Wilson, chief analyst at Finalto, told the paper: “DJT is moving on Trump’s improved odds of winning.”

ABC News quoted Tyler Richey, an analyst at Sevens Report Research, describing the shares as “a little bit of a proxy for sentiment toward Donald Trump himself.” That is an interpretation of how investors traded the stock, not a calculation that separates the effect of one event from other news or market positioning. ABC also quoted University of Florida finance professor Jay Ritter: “The only thing that you can predict is that there will continue to be volatility.”

How the stock move relates to Trump Media’s business

A sharp share-price increase does not by itself show that a company’s revenue or operating results improved by the same amount. ABC News, citing government filings, reported that Trump Media had roughly $4 million in revenue and $58 million in net losses for the prior year. Those figures provide operating context for the stock story; they do not, on their own, establish what the company’s shares should be worth.

The July 2024 episode is best understood as a volatile market repricing of a publicly traded holding amid election-related sentiment. It does not establish Trump’s present net worth or Trump Media’s current share price.
