Give the earliest date you can realistically start, the days and hours you can reliably work, and any firm scheduling limits. Offer flexibility only where you can genuinely provide it. For example: “I can start on [date]. I’m available [days and hours]. I can also cover [specific additional time] with [notice/occasionally]. I’m not available [fixed conflict].” Replace every bracket with details that are true for you.
Why employers ask about your availability
An employer is checking whether your schedule and start timing match the role’s staffing needs. This is especially relevant for part-time, shift-based, weekend, or otherwise nonstandard schedules. The question also gives both sides a chance to identify a mismatch before you accept an offer.
Listen for the specific detail the interviewer wants. “Availability” may mean your start date, regular days and hours, willingness to work nights or weekends, openness to overtime, or dates you already know you cannot work.
How to prepare an accurate answer
- Review the role’s schedule. Check the posting or job description for required days, hours, shifts, and start timing.
- Map your real commitments. Write down recurring obligations and the times you can reliably work.
- Separate firm limits from flexibility. Identify fixed conflicts, then note any additional hours you could cover occasionally or with notice.
- Answer the question directly. State your start date and the days and hours you can work. Add a brief qualification or alternative if a requested time does not work.
For instance, if you cannot work a particular evening but can work other shifts, say which evening is unavailable and name the shifts you can cover. That gives the employer usable information without implying that your schedule is completely open.

Sample answers for common availability questions
“What is your availability to work?”
“I can start on [date]. I’m available [days] from [start time] to [end time]. I can also cover [specific additional hours] with [notice/occasionally].”
“When can you start?”
“My earliest realistic start date is [date].” If you need to give notice or complete another commitment first, state the date you can actually begin rather than promising an immediate start you cannot meet.

“Are you available on weekends or for night shifts?”
Answer for the particular days or shifts asked about. For example: “I’m available Saturdays, but not Sundays,” or “I can work evening shifts, but I’m not available overnight.” Indeed UK advises candidates to be truthful if they cannot work an occasional weekend shift, rather than reversing that position after receiving an offer: Indeed UK’s availability guidance, updated 16 June 2026.
“Would you be open to overtime?”
Say whether overtime is feasible and, if relevant, under what conditions: “I can sometimes stay late with advance notice, but I can’t commit to regular overtime.” Do not agree to overtime you cannot sustain.

“Are there dates you know you cannot work?”
State any known, relevant dates briefly and explain when you are available instead if that helps. For a recurring conflict, describe the pattern rather than making it sound like a one-time exception.
How to discuss a schedule conflict
If the schedule in the job description conflicts with a real constraint, be clear and concise. Name the unavailable hours and offer alternatives where possible. For example: “I can’t work Tuesdays after 5 p.m., but I’m available the other weekday evenings and on Saturdays.” This lets the employer assess the fit without leaving your limits ambiguous.

A vague “I’m flexible” may not answer a staffing question that depends on specific coverage. Likewise, do not promise weekend work, night shifts, overtime, or an immediate start unless you can honor that commitment. A mismatch is better surfaced during hiring than after you have agreed to a schedule you cannot work.
