Did Grayscale’s Zcash ETF Top $1 Billion? What the September 2026 Report Says

Grayscale reported more than $500 million in ZCSH assets two weeks after launch. Here’s how that differs from inflows and why the $1 billion claim is unverified.

No—the primary report available for this milestone says Grayscale’s Zcash ETF, ticker ZCSH, had more than $500 million in assets under management (AUM), not more than $1 billion. In its September 8, 2026 announcement, Grayscale also reported more than $70 million in cumulative inflows during the fund’s first two weeks and disclosed a separate investment of about $100 million from an affiliated DCG entity. Those figures do not establish that the wider crypto ETF market has entered a new phase.

What did Grayscale report about ZCSH’s AUM?

ZCSH began trading on NYSE Arca on August 25, 2026. Two weeks later, Grayscale reported that the fund’s AUM had grown to more than $500 million. The September 8 release filed with the SEC does not substantiate a $1 billion milestone.

Figure What it refers to Source and date
More than $500 million ZCSH’s reported AUM milestone, reached two weeks after launch. AUM is the value of assets held by the fund, not a measure of investor inflows alone. Grayscale, September 8, 2026; SEC-filed release
More than $70 million Cumulative inflows Grayscale reported for the fund’s first two weeks as an exchange-traded product (ETP). Grayscale, September 8, 2026; SEC-filed release
Approximately $100 million An investment by DCG International Investments Ltd., an affiliated entity, disclosed separately in the filing. On September 8, it acquired shares by exchanging 85,705.32563297 ZEC through an authorized participant. Grayscale Form 8-K, September 8, 2026; SEC filing

AUM, cumulative inflows and an investor’s purchase are different measures. AUM can also change as the value of the underlying ZEC changes and through other fund activity. Grayscale said its AUM milestone included both the reported inflows and the affiliated investment, so those figures should not be added together to derive a separate total or described as entirely independent third-party demand. The 8-K says the affiliate’s shares had no preference features and were economically the same as the fund’s other shares.

Does the milestone show that the crypto ETF market is entering a new phase?

Not on the evidence in Grayscale’s September 8 release and SEC filing. They report activity in one fund; they do not provide a market-wide statistic, comparison across crypto funds, or an attributable statement establishing a new phase for the broader ETF market. The $1 billion figure and the wider market characterization therefore remain unverified by these primary sources.

What does ZCSH let an investor own?

ZCSH is an exchange-traded product offering spot exposure to ZEC, Zcash’s digital currency. The August 25 launch announcement says the fund is not registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940 and that buying a share is not a direct investment in ZEC.

The SEC-filed prospectus describes a trust that holds ZEC and issues shares representing beneficial interests in the trust. The trust creates and redeems shares in baskets. A share’s value is intended to reflect the value of the trust’s ZEC, less expenses and liabilities, but it can diverge from that underlying value. The amount of ZEC represented by each share gradually declines as ZEC is used to pay the sponsor fee and other trust expenses; consult the current prospectus for current fees and operating terms.

ZCSH shares and direct ZEC ownership are not interchangeable

With direct ZEC ownership, a person holds the digital asset. With ZCSH, the person holds trust shares that provide exposure to ZEC through the fund. That distinction affects custody and operational responsibilities, expenses, trading access and hours, and how closely share value tracks the underlying asset. The sources cited here do not establish a current, complete comparison of total costs, tax treatment or brokerage availability, so those details should be checked for an individual account and jurisdiction.

Does Zcash make every transaction private?

No. Zcash supports both transparent and shielded transactions; privacy is not automatic for every transaction. The prospectus describes shielded transactions as using zk-SNARKs to protect transaction amounts and sender and recipient information. Transparent transactions are publicly viewable and can allow selective disclosure.

The prospectus reports a maximum supply of 21 million ZEC, 16.7 million circulating ZEC and an aggregate Zcash market value of $6.7 billion as of June 30, 2026. It also identifies Zcash as the 12th-largest digital asset by market capitalization tracked by CoinMarketCap on that date. These are dated figures, not current market measurements.

What risks should a prospective ZCSH investor consider?

Grayscale warns that ZCSH carries significant risk and heightened volatility, may not suit someone unable to bear the loss of the entire investment, and is not a complete investment program. Its prospectus also notes that the predecessor trust’s OTCQX shares historically traded at substantial premiums and discounts to underlying value. That history is not evidence of ZCSH’s post-conversion trading performance.

  • Underlying-asset risk: ZCSH’s exposure is to ZEC, whose value can be volatile.
  • Share-price tracking risk: the market price of a share can differ from the value of the ZEC represented by it.
  • Expense effect: trust expenses reduce the amount of ZEC represented by each share over time.
  • Loss risk: the issuer says investors could lose their entire investment.

For current fees, operating details and risk disclosures, read the SEC-filed prospectus rather than relying on a launch announcement or an AUM headline.
