15 Best Used All-Wheel-Drive Vehicles Under $20,000, Ranked

Compare 15 used AWD vehicles that can fit a $20,000 advertised-price budget, from the Mazda CX-5 to the Ford Fusion. Learn what to inspect and how to account for costs beyond the listing price.

A $20,000 advertised-price ceiling can still buy a capable used all-wheel-drive vehicle, but the best choice depends on more than the badge or drivetrain. Taxes, registration, dealer fees, insurance, tires, and immediate repairs can make the final cost much higher.

This ranking covers the U.S. used market as of August 9, 2026. It weighs reliability reputation, safety, operating costs, practicality, driving quality, AWD usefulness, and how realistically each vehicle can be found at or below the advertised-price limit. Inventory and mileage vary substantially by region.

How to use this list without blowing your car budget

Set an out-the-door limit, not just a listing-price limit. For example, if you can spend $20,000 total, a vehicle advertised at $18,000 may be more realistic after taxes, registration, documentation fees, and an inspection. Leave room for tires, brakes, fluid services, and insurance.

Also confirm that the specific vehicle has AWD. A crossover’s appearance, traction control, or “4×4 style” marketing does not prove that it has all-wheel drive. Check the VIN, factory equipment sheet, or original window sticker.

1. 2018–2021 Mazda CX-5 AWD

Best target: 2019–2021 Touring or Grand Touring AWD

The CX-5 is the strongest all-around choice here. It combines a quiet, near-premium cabin with dependable engines, good safety equipment, comfortable ride quality, and sharper handling than most compact crossovers. It is also common enough in the used market that buyers can compare several examples instead of settling for the first AWD vehicle they find.

2018 models added standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Mazda made its full i-Activsense driver-assistance package standard for 2020. AWD was optional, so verify the drivetrain on the individual vehicle.

Watch for: The rear seat and cargo area are tighter than those of a CR-V or RAV4. Turbocharged trims can be more expensive to maintain and harder to find under budget.

2. 2018–2020 Subaru Crosstrek

Best target: 2019–2020 Premium or Limited

The Crosstrek is one of the easiest AWD vehicles to recommend for snow, light trails, and commuting because AWD is standard, ground clearance is useful, and the hatchback body is practical without being bulky. It also tends to retain value well.

The main compromise is performance. The 2.0-liter engine is slow when the vehicle is loaded or climbing hills, and the CVT’s service history deserves close attention. Sub-$20,000 examples are often not low-mileage vehicles; one current example cited in the research was a 2020 Limited with 55,859 miles advertised below $19,000.

3. 2016–2019 Toyota RAV4 AWD or Hybrid AWD

Best target: 2016–2018 XLE AWD or 2016–2019 Hybrid AWD

The RAV4 earns its place through practicality, durability, strong resale value, and broad service availability. The 2016 model year introduced the RAV4 Hybrid, which used standard AWD and carried a 32-mpg combined EPA rating.

Conventional AWD models are easier to find within the budget. Hybrid examples can also appear below $20,000, but buyers should expect substantial mileage: current listings include vehicles in roughly the 100,000- to 150,000-mile range. A low-mileage hybrid at this price deserves careful scrutiny rather than an automatic “good deal” assumption.

Watch for: Hybrid battery condition, suspension wear, brake condition, and complete service records.

4. 2017–2020 Honda CR-V AWD

Best target: 2017–2019 EX AWD

The CR-V offers excellent interior space, comfortable seats, good fuel economy, and a large, useful cargo area. The 2017 redesign brought a more modern cabin and turbocharged engines. It is a particularly strong choice for a family that needs room but does not want a three-row SUV.

AWD was optional, so check the equipment rather than assuming it is present. Some 1.5-liter turbo models have reported fuel-dilution concerns, particularly in cold-weather operation. Review maintenance records, confirm software updates, and ask whether applicable campaign or warranty work was completed.

The CR-V ranks below the RAV4 because comparable AWD examples often cost more than similarly equipped CX-5 or Crosstrek models.

5. 2019–2021 Subaru Forester

Best target: 2019–2020 Premium or Sport

The Forester is a strong winter and family vehicle. Standard AWD, excellent outward visibility, a roomy cabin, and a square cargo area make it easy to live with. The 2019 redesign also brought a newer platform and more standard driver-assistance technology.

The naturally aspirated engine is not particularly quick, and used prices remain firm. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were unavailable on the base trim, so inspect the actual equipment list instead of assuming every 2019–2021 Forester has those features.

6. 2020–2022 Ford Escape Hybrid AWD

Best target: 2020–2021 SE Sport AWD or SEL AWD

This is the fuel-economy specialist on the list. AWD hybrid versions are rated at approximately 40 mpg combined, and current listings include 2020–2021 examples below $20,000, sometimes with roughly 50,000–80,000 miles.

  • ES Wheel: At 280mm (11 inches), the compact diameter gives the motor maximum leverage, ensuring the 5.5Nm force feedback feels crisp, strong, and detailed rather than dampened or weak.
  • SR-P Lite Pedals(No Clutch): Crafted from high-strength steel, this Pedal with throttle and brake feature precise Hall sensors, adjustable spacing and height, customizable output curves, and an anti-slip base—offering reliable, adaptable performance for any setup.

The catch is availability. Most Escape hybrids are front-wheel drive, so do not confuse a well-equipped FWD hybrid with an AWD model. The Escape is newer and more efficient than many alternatives, but Toyota has the stronger long-term reliability and resale reputation.

7. 2020–2022 Mazda CX-30 AWD

Best target: 2020–2021 Preferred or Select AWD

The CX-30 delivers an upscale, quiet interior and unusually good handling for a subcompact SUV. Many 2020–2022 examples can fit the budget, particularly in base or Select trims.

Its lower ranking is about utility rather than quality. Rear-seat and cargo space are limited, and the base engine is adequate rather than quick. It is a good financial fit for a commuter or couple, but less useful for a family carrying bulky equipment.

8. 2018–2020 Subaru Outback

Best target: 2018–2019 2.5i Premium or Limited

The Outback is a raised wagon rather than a conventional SUV, but that distinction makes it useful. Standard AWD, good visibility, a comfortable ride, and generous cargo space suit buyers carrying bicycles, pets, camping equipment, or other bulky items.

Inspect the CVT history carefully. Certain 2018 Legacy and Outback vehicles received a Subaru CVT warranty extension to 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever came first. It was not a recall and does not automatically apply to every vehicle. Verify eligibility by VIN and review the service records.

9. 2019–2021 Mazda3 AWD

Best target: 2019–2021 Mazda3 Preferred or Select AWD

If you do not need an SUV, the Mazda3 is one of the best AWD choices available. It offers a high-quality cabin, composed handling, and sedan or hatchback body styles. The 2021 model offered AWD in both forms; the turbocharged engine included AWD.

The trade-offs are tight rear-seat room and, in the hatchback, poorer rear visibility than a crossover. It is best suited to buyers who value driving quality and fuel-efficient compact-car dimensions over maximum cargo capacity.

10. 2015–2016 Toyota Highlander AWD

Best target: 2015 XLE AWD or Limited AWD

The Highlander is the best three-row option in this group for buyers who need family space and Toyota’s durability reputation. It provides a comfortable ride, useful cargo room, and available AWD.

A $20,000 budget generally means an older vehicle with higher mileage. Have the suspension and cooling system inspected, and test the third-row seat rather than treating its presence as proof that it meets your needs. Fuel economy and maintenance costs are less favorable than with the compact crossovers above.

11. 2016–2018 Acura RDX AWD

Best target: 2016–2018 Technology Package AWD

The RDX offers stronger acceleration and a more premium cabin than mainstream compact crossovers while avoiding some of the ownership complexity associated with older European luxury SUVs. It can be a compelling choice for buyers who want comfort and equipment without paying for a newer luxury vehicle.

Budget for higher fuel, tire, brake, and insurance costs than you would with a CR-V or CX-5. A complete maintenance history matters more than an attractive leather interior or low advertised price.

12. 2015–2017 Lexus NX 200t AWD

Best target: 2015–2017 NX 200t AWD

The NX provides a quiet interior, premium-brand build quality, and strong resale value. AWD examples can fall below $20,000 because they are older and frequently have higher mileage.

Ownership costs are less predictable than those of a Toyota-badged crossover. Factor in luxury-brand repair, insurance, tire, and turbocharged-engine maintenance costs before deciding that the purchase price is affordable. Rear-seat and cargo space are also limited.

13. 2017–2019 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack

Best target: 2017–2019 SE or SEL

The Golf Alltrack is a distinctive alternative to an SUV. Its 4Motion AWD, useful wagon cargo area, and engaging road manners make it appealing to buyers who want practicality without a tall driving position.

It ranks below the Japanese choices because maintenance is more complex. Confirm dual-clutch transmission service, inspect the vehicle carefully, and verify that recall work is complete. A lower purchase price does not eliminate the need for a repair reserve.

14. 2019–2021 Honda HR-V AWD

Best target: 2019–2021 EX AWD

The HR-V is easy to maneuver, economical, and more flexible inside than its exterior dimensions suggest. AWD examples are widely available below $20,000, making it one of the more accessible entries on this list.

Its weaknesses are slow acceleration, a noisy engine under load, and less sophisticated crash-avoidance technology than newer vehicles. It is a sensible low-cost commuter, but the CX-30, CX-5, and Crosstrek deliver more refinement or capability.

Source: Honda HR-V information.

15. 2018–2020 Ford Fusion AWD

Best target: 2018–2019 SE or Titanium AWD

The Fusion is the sedan value pick. Certain gasoline-engine trims offered AWD, and the car provides a comfortable ride, spacious cabin, and strong equipment for the money.

AWD was not available on every Fusion. The Fusion Hybrid is not the same as the gasoline AWD model, so verify the drivetrain through the VIN or factory equipment sheet. The Fusion ranks last because it is older and less versatile than a crossover, but it can be a financially attractive option for a buyer who does not need SUV cargo space.

What to check before buying

  1. Confirm AWD by VIN or factory equipment listing. Do not rely on the seller’s headline, body style, or traction-control system.
  2. Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup. It identifies unrepaired safety recalls associated with that vehicle. Recall repairs are generally completed by the manufacturer at no charge. NHTSA recall lookup.
  3. Pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection. Prioritize this step for Subaru CVTs, turbocharged vehicles, luxury models, and older three-row SUVs.
  4. Check all four tires. They should match in size, brand, model, and have similar tread depth. Differences in tire circumference can stress some AWD systems.
  5. Inspect the underside for rust. Snowbelt corrosion can affect brake lines, suspension components, subframes, and exhaust parts even when the title is clean.
  6. Price the first year of ownership. Include insurance, tires, brakes, scheduled maintenance, registration, and likely repairs—not just the loan payment.
  7. Remember what AWD cannot do. AWD primarily helps a vehicle accelerate from a stop. It does not automatically improve braking or cornering on snow and ice; winter-capable tires remain critical. Consumer Reports explains AWD’s limits.

Common claims that are wrong or outdated

  • “All Subarus have the same AWD system.” Hardware and operating logic vary by model, transmission, engine, and trim.
  • “Every RAV4 Hybrid under $20,000 is a low-mileage bargain.” Many current examples have approximately 100,000–150,000 miles.
  • “The Mazda3 AWD is hatchback-only.” The 2021 Mazda3 offered AWD in both sedan and hatchback forms.
  • “AWD means better winter braking.” Tires and tire condition matter heavily for braking and cornering.
  • “A recall automatically makes a car unsafe to buy.” Check whether the repair is open and whether it can be completed; an open recall is not automatically a reason to reject the vehicle. Use NHTSA’s VIN lookup to check.
  • “A $20,000 listing costs $20,000.” Taxes, registration, dealer fees, financing products, add-ons, and immediate maintenance can raise the final amount substantially.

FAQ

What is the best used AWD vehicle under $20,000?

The 2018–2021 Mazda CX-5 AWD is the strongest overall choice because it combines reliability reputation, safety equipment, comfort, driving quality, and realistic availability. The 2019–2021 Subaru Crosstrek is a better fit for buyers who prioritize standard AWD and ground clearance.

Is AWD worth paying more for?

AWD can help acceleration from a stop on slippery roads, but it does not guarantee better braking or cornering. Compare the cost of AWD with the cost of good winter or all-weather tires, and do not sacrifice maintenance history or vehicle condition just to obtain AWD.

What is the cheapest AWD vehicle to maintain on this list?

The Mazda CX-5, Subaru Crosstrek, Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Honda HR-V generally offer more predictable mainstream ownership costs than the Acura RDX, Lexus NX, and Volkswagen Golf Alltrack. The specific vehicle’s mileage, condition, tires, and service history still matter more than the ranking alone.

How much should I budget beyond a $20,000 advertised price?

There is no universal amount because taxes and fees vary by state and dealer. Keep a separate reserve for taxes, registration, dealer charges, inspection, immediate maintenance, tires, and insurance. If $20,000 is your total available budget, target a listing comfortably below $20,000 rather than using the full amount on the vehicle price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

The Mazda CX-5 AWD is the best balanced purchase, while the Subaru Crosstrek is the simplest recommendation for standard AWD and light outdoor use. Choose the Toyota RAV4 for durability and resale value, the Honda CR-V for interior space, and the Ford Escape Hybrid AWD for fuel economy.

Before committing, verify AWD by VIN, inspect the vehicle independently, check recalls at NHTSA, compare all four tires, and calculate the out-the-door cost. A well-maintained $18,000 vehicle is usually a better personal-finance decision than a neglected $20,000 example with a more desirable badge.
