To read a company’s quarterly results, compare the same financial measures across comparable periods, then connect revenue, profit, margins, and cash flow rather than relying on a single headline figure. Revenue is sales, not profit; EPS is not cash paid to shareholders; and reported earnings do not tell you by themselves how much cash operations generated. The SEC advises reading the statements together because “no one financial statement tells the complete story.”
1. Confirm the period and reporting basis
Before comparing figures, check the fiscal quarter end and the table headings. A company’s fiscal year may not match the calendar year, and a release may show the quarter, year-to-date results, prior-year comparisons, or trailing-twelve-month figures. Note the units, whether results cover continuing operations, and whether each figure is GAAP or adjusted.
For a seasonal business, the same quarter a year earlier is often a more useful comparison than the immediately preceding quarter. Use the same period and basis on both sides of a comparison; otherwise, an apparent change may reflect different time spans or definitions rather than performance.
2. Read revenue growth—and find its drivers
Revenue, sometimes called sales or net sales, is the top line: the amount earned from selling goods or services before costs and expenses are subtracted. If the company does not state a comparable growth rate, calculate it as (current-period revenue ÷ comparison-period revenue) − 1. For example, revenue of $110 million compared with $100 million is 10% growth.

Then look in management’s discussion and analysis (MD&A), segment reporting, and relevant notes for the explanation. Potential drivers include:
- Units sold or customer demand (volume)
- Prices and the mix of products or services sold
- Acquisitions, divestitures, or changes in the businesses included
- Foreign-exchange effects
- Other factors the company identifies, including accounting or reporting changes
Do not call growth “organic” unless the company defines the measure and explains its adjustments. For example, Procter & Gamble’s SEC-filed release uses issuer-specific definitions for organic growth and adjusted results; those definitions are not universal measures for other companies: P&G’s quarterly release filed with the SEC.
Revenue growth alone does not establish that performance improved. Costs may have risen faster than sales, or growth may reflect a purchase or a change in reporting. The next step is to follow revenue down the income statement.

3. Trace profit from gross to net
The income statement shows a sequence of profit measures. Each answers a different question, so identify the exact line when someone says “profit” or “earnings.”
| Measure | What it represents | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Gross profit | Revenue less cost of sales (also called cost of revenue) | Whether the cost of producing or delivering what the company sells is changing relative to revenue |
| Income from operations | Gross profit less operating expenses | Whether the core operating result changed, and which operating costs contributed |
| Net income | Profit or loss after interest, other items, and income tax | Whether items below operating income, such as interest or tax, explain a change |
| Earnings per share (EPS) | Net income expressed per share, using the reported basic or diluted share count | Which EPS basis is shown and whether the share count changed |
EPS is not a cash payment to shareholders. A change in net income or EPS may reflect a one-time gain, restructuring charge, tax change, interest cost, or different share count rather than a similar change in sales or operating performance. Verify explanations in the statements and notes; do not assume an item is nonrecurring just because it is described as unusual.
4. Calculate margins consistently
A margin is a profit measure divided by revenue, expressed as a percentage. The SEC defines operating margin as income from operations ÷ net revenues. Gross margin uses gross profit as the numerator; net margin uses net income. These measures describe different layers of the income statement and should not be used interchangeably.
When comparing a margin over time, keep the numerator, denominator, and reporting basis the same. If a company reports an adjusted margin, label it adjusted and review its definition and reconciliation to the closest GAAP measure before comparing it with another period or company. An adjusted operating margin is not automatically comparable to GAAP operating margin.
Read the margin alongside revenue: a margin can rise even as revenue falls, and revenue can rise while a margin contracts. Segment results and MD&A can help explain the combination. Comparisons between companies also require care: industry, business mix, seasonality, and accounting presentation matter, and the SEC notes that desirable ratios vary by industry.
5. Compare operating cash flow with earnings
On the cash flow statement, find “net cash provided by (used in) operating activities.” This reports cash generated or used by operations during the period. It is related to net income, but it is not the same measure: the statement reconciles accounting earnings with cash flows and includes adjustments for noncash items and changes in operating assets and liabilities.
Compare the direction of operating cash flow with net income, then inspect the reconciliation. Changes in receivables, inventory, and payables can shift the timing of cash received or paid. A difference between cash flow and earnings is a reason to investigate the period and business model, not a universal sign of good or bad performance: cash flows can be lumpy within a quarter.
“Free cash flow” has no single automatic calculation that applies to every issuer. Check the company’s definition and whether it reconciles the figure to operating cash flow. P&G, for example, defines free cash flow and adjusted income using its own stated calculations and exclusions in its SEC-filed quarterly release; do not silently apply that issuer’s definitions to another company.

MD&A is management’s narrative about financial performance and condition, including trends, events, and uncertainties known to management that may materially affect reported information. Read it to understand management’s account, then check material explanations against the statements and notes. It is useful context, not a substitute for the reported figures.

Pay particular attention when the report discusses acquisitions, discontinued operations, changes in segments or accounting, litigation, impairments, restructuring, foreign-exchange effects, or tax items. These details can make a headline comparison less straightforward. Treat a change as temporary or recurring only when the evidence supports that conclusion.
7. Compare quarters or companies without mixing measures
For a quick, disciplined comparison, keep these measures and context aligned:
- Revenue: growth rate, comparison period, and the company’s stated growth drivers.
- Profit: trends in gross, operating, and net income, plus material items between those lines.
- Margins: the same numerator, denominator, and basis—GAAP or clearly labeled adjusted.
- Cash generation: operating cash flow alongside net income, with working-capital movements in view.
- Context: industry, seasonality, fiscal period, business mix, and management’s stated trends or risks.
Do not rank businesses by one growth rate or margin alone. The same percentage can mean different things for companies with different industries, business models, or reporting periods.
A company example is not a benchmark
Emerson’s SEC-filed results for the second quarter of 2026, released May 5, 2026, report net sales of $4.562 billion, GAAP EPS of $1.10, operating cash flow of $779 million, and free cash flow of $694 million. These figures describe that company and quarter; they are not targets or general benchmarks for other companies. Emerson’s second-quarter 2026 results filed with the SEC.
