Is Elon Musk’s Net Worth Down $122 Billion From a December Peak? The Claim Is Unverified

Available Bloomberg and Forbes estimates do not verify that Elon Musk’s net worth fell $122 billion from a December peak. The dated figures use different dates and estimators.

The claim that Elon Musk’s net worth is down $122 billion from a December peak is not verified by the available dated estimates. The closest Bloomberg comparison in the cited material uses a different peak: Bloomberg News reported that its estimate reached about $1.33 trillion on June 16, 2026, then was $684 billion on July 31. That does not establish a December baseline or support the $122 billion figure.

What the dated estimates show

Net-worth figures are snapshots, not fixed account balances. Each one needs its estimator and as-of date, and estimates from different publishers or dates should not be treated as a like-for-like change.

Publisher and source Reported estimate As of What it establishes
Bloomberg News, “Elon Musk’s Fortune Slumps to Pre-SpaceX IPO Levels After Rout” About $1.33 trillion June 16, 2026 Bloomberg News reported this as the estimated peak.
Bloomberg News, same report $684 billion July 31, 2026 The Bloomberg Billionaires Index estimate on that date.
Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Elon Musk profile $929 billion October 1, 2026 The profile’s dated value; it is a later snapshot, not a December peak comparison.
Forbes, Elon Musk real-time net-worth profile $886.4 billion September 16, 2026 Forbes’ estimate on a different date, from a different estimator.

The June-to-July Bloomberg figures describe a much larger movement than $122 billion, but they concern a June peak—not the December peak named in the claim. The October Bloomberg and September Forbes figures are also not a same-day comparison and cannot validate that claim.

Why estimates can differ

Bloomberg describes its Billionaires Index as a dynamic measure that reflects changes in markets, the economy and Bloomberg reporting. Its profile identifies Musk’s Tesla and SpaceX stakes as the main sources of his fortune. Bloomberg also notes that certain unvested or conditional awards are excluded from its calculation.

#1 Best Overall

Forbes presents its own real-time estimate. Different estimation methods, dates and treatment of awards or private-company holdings can produce materially different figures. A sound comparison must use the same publisher and methodology, identify both the baseline and ending dates, and account for what assets or awards the estimate includes.

What would be needed to verify the $122 billion figure

Verification requires the original source for the December peak and its calculation. Without that baseline, the available figures do not show whether the claimed decline is accurate. Do not substitute a calculation using the June Bloomberg peak or combine Bloomberg and Forbes snapshots: either approach changes the dates or estimator behind the comparison.
