Avelo and Allegiant can work better on specific nonstop routes, Southwest may be competitive when checked bags matter, and Breeze or major airlines are worth checking wherever they fly. Compare the same dates and practical airports, then price the trip with the bags, seats, and ground travel you actually need.
Start with your route, not a national ranking
There is no single cheapest replacement for Spirit across all domestic trips. Airlines price by route, date, demand, and availability, while airport distance, schedule, baggage, seat selection, and ticket flexibility can change the total cost. Search the exact origin and destination for your travel dates, including nearby airports only if getting to them is realistic.
Frontier said in May 2026 that it was serving more than 100 routes formerly flown by Spirit, with examples including Atlanta–Orlando and Atlanta–Fort Lauderdale. That is a dated route snapshot, not a guarantee of current service or frequency. Check the airline’s live schedule for your dates. Frontier’s announcement
Which airlines are worth comparing?
| Airline | Why it may fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Frontier | The closest comparison to Spirit’s low-base-fare structure. Its fare page lists one personal item as included. Frontier fare inclusions | Current route and frequency, then the final price with any needed bags, seat selection, or bundle. Frontier’s May 2026 announcement reported more than 100 former Spirit routes in service at that time. Route announcement |
| Avelo | May offer a route alternative, sometimes through a different airport. Its route announcement included airports such as Wilmington, Delaware (ILG), Lakeland, Florida (LAL), and Tweed-New Haven (HVN). Avelo announcement | Whether the airport is practical from both ends of the trip, which days it flies, and the current all-in fare. Avelo said its schedule was available through April 20, 2027; schedules can change. Schedule announcement |
| Allegiant | Can be a useful option for leisure trips where it offers a nonstop. The airline describes nonstop service as a hallmark of its leisure-focused model. Route announcement | Whether a nonstop operates on your dates, how often it flies, and route-specific baggage charges. Its published free personal-item maximum is 8 × 14 × 18 inches. Allegiant optional services and fees |
| Southwest | May compare favorably when baggage is part of the trip budget. | Check the fare type and applicable ticketing rules. For U.S. mainland travel booked and ticketed or changed on or after April 9, 2026, Southwest lists free carry-on and personal items. Its page lists first and second checked-bag fees of $45 and $55 for Basic, Choice, and Choice Preferred; Choice Extra includes two checked bags. Southwest optional travel charges |
| Breeze | Worth checking where it serves your route. | Confirm the live schedule and fare availability; Breeze warns that displayed fares may no longer be available and optional baggage charges may apply. Breeze flight deals |
| Major airlines and JetBlue | Can offer a lower-priced seat on some routes, so do not rule them out based only on airline category. | Compare the exact fare family, airport, schedule, baggage, and change terms against the alternatives. Associated Press reporting on the budget-airline market |
Compare the trip’s total cost
A base fare is only one part of the amount you may pay. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Domestic Airfare Consumer Report, Fourth Quarter 2025, published in 2026, says its reported ticket fares include taxes and mandatory airline charges but exclude optional fees such as baggage and seat upgrades. The survey expanded in July 2025 to cover all domestic certificated and commuter carriers using a 40% sample, under new reporting rules. Its historical market data provide context, not an all-in comparison of the trip you are shopping for. Read the DOT report
#1 Best Overall
- Carry-On Approved Size: 22 in. hardside spinner measuring 22" x 14" x 9.5" overall, sized to meet most major airline carry-on requirements
- Smooth 360° 4-Wheel Spinner System: Four quiet, EZ-glide in-line blade spinner wheels roll effortlessly in any direction
- Lightweight Hardshell: Durable 100% ABS shell weighs just 6.4 lbs empty
- Easy-Grip Handles & Locking Trolley: Push-button recessed telescoping handle locks at your preferred height, plus padded top and side carry handles for lifting into overhead bins
- Fully-Lined Interior with Compression Straps: Adjustable straps hold clothing flat and secure
For each flight you are considering, compare:
- Fare for identical dates and airports: Make sure the itinerary and passenger count match.
- Airport access: Include the cost and time of getting to the airport. An alternate airport can erase a lower fare through extra driving, parking, transit, or an overnight stay.
- Schedule and connections: Compare departure times, operating days, nonstop availability, and any added connection time.
- Bags and seats: Price the personal item, carry-on, checked bags, and seat selection you expect to use. Airline allowances and fees differ; check the policy for the fare you are buying.
- Flexibility: Review change and cancellation terms, especially if your plans may shift.
Why baggage can change the winner
Allegiant lists a free personal item up to 8 × 14 × 18 inches and carry-on fees ranging from $10 to $75, varying by route and when the bag is added. These are the terms on its fee page accessed October 2026; confirm the amount for your booking. Allegiant fee details
Southwest’s published checked-bag rules also depend on fare and travel dates: for qualifying U.S. mainland travel booked and ticketed or changed on or after April 9, 2026, the page lists $45 for the first checked bag and $55 for the second on Basic, Choice, and Choice Preferred, while Choice Extra includes two checked bags. Confirm eligibility and current terms before purchase. Southwest fee details
Rank #2
- CARRY-ON DESIGN: Best for 1-5 day trips without the hassle of checking luggage; measures 14.8 x 10 x 21.7 inches, including wheels
- DURABLE AND RELIABLE: Extra-thick hard shell with scratch-resistant finish guards against impact and rough handling
- EXPANDABLE: Increase packing space up to 25% for added flexibility and organization
- ORGANIZED INTERIOR: Keep essentials organized with an interior divider and three zippered pockets
- EFFORTLESS TRAVEL: Navigate with ease thanks to four multi-directional wheels, telescoping handle, and short lift handle
If you plan to travel with only a personal item, check the dimensions for the airline and fare you choose. Allegiant’s limit is not a universal size standard, and a bag that exceeds an airline’s allowance may trigger a separate charge.
How to choose the best replacement for your trip
- Search your exact dates and route. Check Frontier first if you want the closest Spirit-style alternative, then compare Avelo, Allegiant, Breeze, Southwest, JetBlue, and major airlines wherever they operate.
- Check nearby airports selectively. Consider an alternate airport only after checking the ground journey, operating days, and total time.
- Build the fare around your needs. Add the bags and seats you expect to use, and examine the fare’s change or cancellation terms.
- Compare complete itineraries. Weigh total price alongside nonstop availability, schedule, and airport access. A lower fare is not necessarily the better value if it adds costly ground travel or an inconvenient connection.
- Recheck before booking. Routes, schedules, fares, fees, and seat availability can change. Use the airline’s booking page for a current quote on your dates.
Why there is no universal cheapest Spirit replacement
The available evidence does not establish one present-day national “cheapest Spirit replacement.” DOT fare figures are historical and exclude optional baggage and seat charges; airline starting fares and promotions apply to particular routes, dates, and available seats. Frontier’s May 2026 rescue-fare deadline and summer pass were limited to 2026 and have passed. Avelo’s May 2026 promotion likewise should not be treated as an offer available now without checking its booking page. Avelo’s announcement
