You can buy Bitcoin in Robinhood’s US app or on Robinhood web classic by opening Crypto, selecting Bitcoin, choosing Buy, entering an amount, and reviewing the order before submitting it. The key cost detail: “no transaction fee” on the default market-maker route does not mean a trade has no cost—the spread can affect the price you receive. Exchange-routed orders instead show an explicit fee based on your eligible trading volume and, where applicable, maker/taker handling.
How to buy Bitcoin on Robinhood
- In the US Robinhood app or on web classic, select Crypto.
- Search for and select Bitcoin, then choose Buy.
- Enter the dollar amount you want to spend. Robinhood supports fractional crypto orders; its stated minimums are $0.01 for market-maker-routed orders and $0.03 for exchange-routed orders.
- Open the Actions menu to confirm the order type, such as a market order or recurring investment.
- Select Review and inspect the order details, including the estimated price, bid and ask, and any displayed fee.
- In the app, swipe up to submit. On web classic, select Submit buy.
Bitcoin is listed for market-maker routing in the US app and web classic, and for fee-tier exchange trading in the app and Robinhood Legend. Availability and feature access can vary by platform and location, so check the options shown in your account.
Why the displayed Bitcoin price may differ from your execution price
Robinhood defines the chart’s mid price as the midpoint between the current bid and ask. A buy order generally executes at the ask, which is usually above the mid; a sell generally executes at the bid, usually below it. Robinhood states: “Orders are filled at the bid or ask price, not at the mid price.” The order review screen shows current bid and ask prices, so use those and the displayed estimate—not the chart’s mid price alone—to assess the order before submitting it.
How Robinhood’s two crypto routing choices charge
| Routing | How it works | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Market-maker routing | Robinhood’s default for standard crypto orders in the app and web classic. Orders go to third-party liquidity providers. | No separately listed transaction fee in Robinhood’s comparison, but Robinhood receives compensation from market makers that is included in the spread. |
| Exchange routing | For supported crypto in the app, orders go to one or more partner exchanges and may qualify for volume-based fee tiers. | An explicit fee based on eligible trailing 30-day exchange-routing volume; where maker/taker pricing applies, the order’s handling can affect the fee. |
Market-maker routing: spread is a cost to consider
Robinhood says it receives part of the executed order’s dollar value from market makers, with that compensation included in the spread rather than shown as a separate transaction fee. In a disclosure effective June 15, 2026, Robinhood said it receives $0.95 per $100 of notional crypto volume routed through market makers. That is Robinhood’s stated receipt from its market maker, not a universal spread, a guaranteed charge to an individual customer, or the total cost of every order.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Exchange routing: explicit fees and maker/taker handling
Robinhood describes exchange-routing fee tiers ranging from 0.00% to 0.95%, based on eligible trailing 30-day exchange-routing volume. The applicable tier and fee should be checked in your own order flow; maker/taker pricing is rolling out gradually and may not apply to every customer.
When maker/taker pricing applies, market and stop orders are taker orders. A limit or stop-limit order may be treated as a maker order if it is not matched immediately, or as a taker order if it executes immediately. A limit order sets a price boundary under the platform’s order rules; it does not guarantee execution.

How to compare the cost before you submit
Robinhood cautions that all-in costs may be higher or lower with either routing option, and neither route guarantees better execution. Compare the order you are actually placing rather than relying only on a “no fee” label or a tier headline.
- Review price and spread: Check the displayed estimate and current bid and ask.
- Explicit exchange fee: If exchange routing is available, check the fee shown for your current tier.
- Order type: For exchange routing, consider whether the order is a market, stop, limit, or stop-limit order and how it may be handled.
- Routing eligibility: Confirm that the route is available for Bitcoin on your platform and in your account.
Market-order buffers, trading hours, and order risk
Robinhood says market buys are buffered up to 1% and market sells up to 5%. If the price moves outside the applicable buffer, the order does not execute; an unexecuted market order may be automatically canceled after two minutes. These controls do not eliminate price or execution risk. Crypto trading is available 24/7 except during scheduled maintenance windows.
