First identify whether the hold is on the purchase, the bank funding, the bought crypto, or an on-chain transfer; each has a different cause and next step.
First, identify what is pending
Open the relevant purchase or deposit in transaction history and check its status, any estimated availability date, and the confirmation email. Coinbase says completion times vary by region, asset type, and payment method. A purchase labeled “pending” has not completed.
- Purchase pending: The crypto order itself has not completed.
- Bank funding pending: A bank deposit or payment has not settled.
- Crypto unavailable to send or cash out: The purchase may be reflected in your balance, but a hold still applies.
- On-chain transfer pending: Crypto already sent to or from Coinbase is waiting for network confirmation. This is different from a purchase or bank deposit; Coinbase’s pending-transactions guidance covers transfers.
If Coinbase says buying or funding is unavailable
Coinbase identifies several possible reasons: incomplete identity verification, an account limitation, a service restriction in your location, a payment method that is unverified or limited, a negative balance, or a bank disruption. The account notice and the payment flow determine which applies.
- Complete any identity-verification steps shown in your account.
- Read the restriction notice and follow its account-specific instructions. Coinbase says transaction types can be restricted for security, compliance, operational, or geographic reasons; service availability depends on account setup and location.
- Check that your payment details are correct and that the payment method belongs to you. If a payment method is limited, another available method may be an option, but switching methods will not necessarily clear an account-level restriction.
- Resolve any negative balance shown in the account.
- If Coinbase indicates a bank disruption, contact your bank before trying the payment again.
Coinbase also says it may disable buying and selling for activity prohibited by its User Agreement. If your notice points to this kind of restriction, use Coinbase’s account notice or support route rather than repeatedly retrying.

If the purchase is waiting on bank funding or authorization
Coinbase says ACH and wire funding typically take 1–3 business days to settle. That is a typical settlement window for those funding methods, not a guarantee that every crypto order will complete within that time. Bank checks or missing authorization can add delay. In some card flows, if required bank authorization is not completed, the order expires and does not process. See Coinbase’s purchase and deposit timing guidance.
U.S. bank-account payments
For U.S. customers, Coinbase describes ACH bank transfer, debit card, and wire as payment methods. A linked bank account must belong to the customer, have a name matching the Coinbase account, and be verified. Coinbase shows when a bank-funded purchase or deposit will be available to send or cash out before confirmation. Card verification outside the United States
For supported countries outside the U.S., a debit-card purchase may require 3D Secure authorization through the bank. If the bank redirect times out, Coinbase suggests trying Chrome with extensions and popup blockers disabled, or completing the purchase in the Coinbase iOS or Android app. See Coinbase’s card-purchase timeout guidance.
If crypto is in your balance but cannot be sent
Buying or trading availability and sending or cash-out availability are not always the same. Coinbase says cash deposits can be held from sending or cashing out for security and fraud-prevention reasons. The confirmation email gives an estimated availability date; hold length can depend on account history, payment activity, and transaction history. Coinbase says Support cannot shorten the hold. Check the available-balance view and confirmation email rather than assuming the full displayed asset value can be transferred. Coinbase notes that some temporary restrictions may remain after an initial hold period; the account message may advise waiting and trying again or withdrawing to the originating bank account.

- Contact your bank if the payment flow identifies a bank disruption, a card authorization problem, or a transfer the bank has not processed.
- Contact Coinbase through your signed-in account if identity verification is stuck, a limitation is unexplained, the stated availability date has passed, or the transaction status does not fit the guidance above.
Have the amount, date and time, payment method, exact status text, and any error code ready. Do not share your password, seed phrase, or authentication codes with anyone claiming to help.
