Why 3× Leveraged Crypto ETFs Can Lose Value Even When Bitcoin or Ether Recovers

A 3× crypto ETF targets a daily return, not a multiple of Bitcoin or Ether’s long-term gain. See how daily resets and a shrinking balance can leave the fund behind after a recovery.

A 3× leveraged crypto ETF generally targets three times its reference asset’s return for a single day—not three times Bitcoin’s or Ether’s return over weeks or months. Because the fund resets its exposure daily, each day’s gain or loss applies to a changing balance. A loss shrinks the base, and a later recovery is calculated from that smaller amount. The daily path, volatility, costs and the fund’s actual reference exposure can therefore leave the fund below its earlier value even after the crypto market rebounds.

What “3×” means—and what it doesn’t

For a daily leveraged ETF, “3×” describes a one-day objective. It does not promise three times the benchmark’s return over any period an investor chooses. The SEC says most leveraged and inverse ETFs reset daily, meaning they are designed to meet their stated objectives on a daily basis. Its Investor Bulletin on leveraged and inverse ETFs explains that results over longer periods can differ substantially from the daily target multiplied by the benchmark’s total-period return.

Consider a simplified fund seeking three times a benchmark’s daily return. If the benchmark rises 2% in a day, the fund’s daily target is approximately a 6% gain; if the benchmark falls 2%, the target is approximately a 6% loss. Those are daily targets, not guarantees: actual results can vary, and the fund’s prospectus defines the specific objective and exposure.

How a recovery can leave the fund behind

Returns compound on the fund’s current value. A percentage loss and a later percentage gain of the same size do not cancel out, because the gain applies to the reduced balance. With daily leverage, this changing base combines with the sequence of benchmark returns. The ending price of Bitcoin or Ether alone does not determine the leveraged fund’s result.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

The SEC’s two-day example

The SEC illustrates the mechanism with a hypothetical 2× ETF—not a 3× crypto fund. An index and ETF each start at $1,000. On Day 1, the index falls 10% to $900, while the ETF falls 20% to $800. On Day 2, the index rises 10% to $990, while the ETF rises 20% from its reduced $800 value to $960. Over the two days, the index is down 1% and the ETF is down 4%, even though the ETF matched twice the index’s daily return on both days. This is an illustration, not historical performance or a simulation of a particular crypto fund.

Why the order and size of moves matter

Repeated rises and falls can produce a different outcome from a smoother path that reaches the same benchmark endpoint. The SEC warns that divergence can be magnified in volatile markets. “Volatility decay” is a common shorthand for one way compounding can weigh on returns, but it is not a guarantee that a leveraged fund will lose value: the direction and path of daily moves matter, too.

The SEC also gives two examples of longer-period divergence, neither of which is identified as a crypto result. Over four months, one unnamed index gained 2% while a 2× daily ETF fell 6%; an inverse 2× ETF fell 25%. Over the same period, a different unnamed index gained around 8% while a 3× daily ETF fell 53%; a 3× inverse ETF declined 90%. These are regulator-published examples, not performance figures for Bitcoin, Ether or a named fund.

“Crypto ETF” can describe different exposures

A fund’s name does not tell you that it directly owns Bitcoin or Ether, or that its benchmark is the spot price. For example, a 2025 SEC-filed ProShares Daily Target 3x Ether prospectus describes a three-times-daily objective tied to the Bloomberg Ethereum Index and says the fund does not invest directly in ether. A 2025 Direxion prospectus filing describes the Direxion Daily Bitcoin Bull 3X ETF as seeking exposure to IBIT equal to 300% of fund assets.

Those examples show why the relevant comparison is the fund’s stated reference and instruments, not simply the movement of Bitcoin or Ether. The filing descriptions are not confirmation that a product is currently listed or that its terms remain unchanged. Check the current prospectus and listing information for the specific fund.

What to check before comparing funds

  • Reference or benchmark: Identify the index, exchange-traded product or other exposure named in the current objective.
  • Target and reset period: Confirm the stated multiple and whether it applies to one trading day.
  • Exposure method: Read how the fund obtains exposure; do not assume direct ownership of spot crypto.
  • Costs and risks: Review the current prospectus for expenses, financing or derivative costs, tracking differences and other risks. The SEC recommends reading the prospectus and points investors to FINRA’s Fund Analyzer for cost analysis. FINRA Fund Analyzer describes its fund coverage and fee-analysis tools.
  • Holding period and market path: A daily-reset product’s multi-day result depends on the sequence of returns as well as the benchmark’s endpoint.

Risks beyond the compounding effect

The SEC cautions that leveraged Bitcoin futures products add leverage to an already speculative and volatile market, potentially magnifying price movements. A fund may also fail to meet its daily objective on a particular day. Costs and tax consequences can differ from those of traditional funds; daily resets may cause short-term gains. These are general risks, not an assessment of any individual investor’s circumstances.
