A Bengaluru farmer says a full day’s baby bottle gourd harvest can be worth about ₹50,000 before expenses. The figure is gross sales—not profit—and comes from one farmer’s account of a seasonal crop sold through brokers who arrange exports to Qatar.
How the reported ₹50,000 figure is calculated
Moneycontrol’s October 4, 2026 report profiles Karigowda, who farms a reported 3.5 acres in Karlapura Palya, Bengaluru Urban district. He says he harvests around one tonne of baby bottle gourds a day during the season and sells them for approximately ₹50 per kilogram.
| Reported measure | Amount | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Harvest on a full day | About 1 tonne | Farmer’s reported seasonal output |
| Reported sale price | About ₹50 per kg | Price attributed to Karigowda in Moneycontrol’s 2026 report |
| Gross value of a full day’s harvest | About ₹50,000 | 1,000 kg multiplied by ₹50 per kg, before costs |
The report also gives an estimate of roughly ₹14–15 lakh in monthly gross sales and about ₹45 lakh over a 90-day harvest period. These are reported sales figures, not verified earnings after expenses; the article says costs must be deducted to calculate profit.
What Karigowda grows and when he harvests
Karigowda says he grows baby bottle gourds for a market that prefers them at roughly 500 grams each. The report says he uses the Swikar 045 F1 variety, based on his account; it provides no independent trial data establishing how that variety performs compared with others.

His reported crop calendar begins with sowing around June or July, with the first harvest about 70 days later. He says harvesting continues from September through December. This is the schedule described for his farm, not a universal planting or harvest timetable for bottle gourd growers.
How the produce reaches Qatar
Brokers collect the gourds and arrange export to Qatar. The report does not say that Karigowda exports directly, nor does it identify the brokers or provide export documentation. In the account, this arrangement lets him focus on cultivation to buyer specifications while intermediaries handle the route to market.
Rank #2
- EXCEPTIONAL GROWTH - Bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria), also known as calabash or birdhouse gourd, produces vigorous fast-growing vines reaching 10 to 20 feet long; trellises or supports yield cleaner gourds and more uniform shape
- VERSATILE GOURD VARIETY - Harvest young gourds for cooking in Indian and Asian dishes or allow fruits to mature and dry naturally for birdhouses, drinking vessels, decorations, and craft projects
- HIGHLY PRODUCTIVE PLANTS - Heat-tolerant calabash gourd vines thrive in full sun with regular watering and rich soil, and can be trained to climb fences, arches, trellises, and other outdoor garden structures
- SUSTAINABLE GARDENING - Bottle gourds provide edible harvests, natural crafting materials, and nesting habitat for purple martins and other cavity nesting birds while attracting helpful pollinators
- FAMILY OWNED USA SMALL BUSINESS – Heirloom non-GMO seeds from Survival Garden Seeds, a trusted American brand; always open-pollinated, untreated, and quality tested for garden success
The profile also mentions drip irrigation, mulching and improved farm machinery as technologies that have changed what is possible on the farm. It does not isolate any one of these inputs as the cause of the reported harvest volume or sales.
Why the sales figure is not a profit figure
Gross sales are the value of produce sold before subtracting the costs of growing and marketing it. The report does not provide Karigowda’s full cost ledger, so it cannot show how much of the reported revenue remains as profit or take-home income.

Consequently, the profile is a reported example of one seasonal sales outcome—not evidence that other growers can expect the same output, price or margin.

Baby bottle gourds are not Karigowda’s only crop. Moneycontrol says he also grows brinjal and tomatoes, and that his brinjal goes to the Hosur market. That diversification is relevant context for his farm, but the report does not provide revenue or profit figures for those crops.

The account suggests two differences from a simple local-market comparison: the reported bottle-gourd price and volume, and a broker-mediated export channel rather than a direct local sale. Because it does not supply a comparable cost breakdown, rejection rate, payment terms or net margin for either route, it cannot establish which is more profitable or whether this model is replicable elsewhere.
