How to Verify a Crypto Exchange Transaction on a Public Blockchain

Use the exchange’s TxID and the matching network explorer to check a transfer’s public record, then distinguish blockchain confirmation from exchange crediting.

To verify an exchange deposit or withdrawal, copy its transaction ID (TxID or transaction hash) from the exchange’s transaction history, open an explorer for the exact network used, and compare the public record with the exchange details. An explorer can show whether a transfer was broadcast or included on-chain; it cannot confirm that a receiving exchange has finished crediting your account.

Find the transaction ID in your exchange account

  1. Open the transaction history on the exchange involved in the transfer and select the relevant deposit or withdrawal.
  2. Copy the identifier labelled TxID, transaction hash, or transaction ID. Coinbase describes opening a transaction and selecting “View on block explorer”; Binance describes opening its transaction record and following the TxID link. Coinbase’s guide to transaction hashes and Binance’s transaction-status instructions explain these paths.
  3. Note the asset and network displayed on the exchange record before searching. The same cryptocurrency can be transferred over different networks, and an explorer lookup must use the chain that handled this transfer.

Look up the TxID on the matching network

Open a block explorer that supports the transaction’s network and search the copied TxID. If the exchange provides a “View on block explorer” link, check that it opens the expected network. Otherwise, choose an explorer for that chain; Coinbase specifically advises using the correct blockchain explorer for the cryptocurrency. Etherscan’s explanation of block explorers describes searching by transaction hash and viewing status, sender, recipient, and value.

Compare the explorer record with the exchange’s transaction entry. Depending on the chain and explorer, useful fields include status, sender, recipient, asset or amount, and time. Coinbase notes that a transaction hash can also expose address, date/time, network fee, and confirmations. Explorer layouts and field names are not universal.

Check the transfer details for the chain

Bitcoin: inspect inputs and outputs

Bitcoin transaction pages can show inputs, outputs, fee or fee rate, confirmation count, and whether a transaction is confirmed or in the mempool. Blockstream’s Bitcoin lookup guide describes searching by transaction ID, address, or block height. Inputs and outputs describe how coins move through a transaction; do not assume every output is the intended recipient. A sender may receive change back to an address they control.

Ethereum and token transfers: check the relevant transfer view

Use an explorer for the specific Ethereum network involved and inspect the transaction status and transfer details. For a token transfer, the top-level transaction destination alone may not identify the recipient or token movement; check the explorer’s token-transfer information as well. Etherscan documents transaction-hash lookup and common transaction details, but fields and presentation differ among Ethereum explorers and networks.

Understand pending, confirmed, and finalized states

These labels describe network observations, not an exchange’s promise to credit a deposit. On Bitcoin, “pending” generally means a transaction has been broadcast but is not yet included in a block. Once included, it has at least one confirmation; each later block increases the confirmation count. Blockstream’s guide explains the mempool and confirmation indicators.

Ethereum API terminology uses pending, latest, safe, and finalized block tags. In the execution API, latest is the latest canonical-chain block observed by a client and may be reorged; safe carries safety assumptions, while finalized refers to the most recent crypto-economically secure block, not expected to be reorged absent manual community intervention. These are technical chain-state terms, not guarantees about when an exchange will credit funds. See the Ethereum Execution APIs documentation.

There is no universal confirmation count that is enough for every asset, network, or exchange. Binance says its minimum Bitcoin confirmation requirement can change. Check the receiving exchange’s current deposit policy for the specific asset and network rather than comparing raw confirmation counts across different chains. Binance’s status guide discusses confirmation requirements.

Separate the public record from exchange processing

An explorer reports what it can find on the selected public network. An exchange’s transaction page reports the platform’s own workflow. A matching on-chain record may still be awaiting the receiving platform’s required confirmations or internal processing, so a visible transaction does not by itself prove that a deposit has been credited.

  • If the explorer shows a matching transaction but your balance has not changed, open the receiving exchange’s deposit history and check its current status and asset/network requirements.
  • If the exchange has not supplied a TxID, check the transaction record and status with the sending platform. Binance advises contacting the platform or sender to obtain a TxID when it is unavailable.
  • If the TxID points to a different network, recipient, or asset than expected, keep the exchange transaction record and explorer link for support. An explorer displays public records; it cannot alter or reverse a transfer.

When an explorer search returns no transaction

A missing result in one lookup is not conclusive proof that the exchange never initiated a request. Bitcoin Core’s REST documentation says its transaction endpoint searches the mempool by default and returns 404 when the transaction is not found there; querying confirmed transactions through that endpoint requires the transaction index to be enabled. This is a technical caveat about that API, not a description of every public explorer. If a search fails, first confirm the TxID was copied correctly and the selected network matches the exchange record, then check with the sending platform. Bitcoin Core’s REST Interface documentation describes the endpoint behavior.
