How to Evaluate DraftKings Stock Before Investing

A practical framework for evaluating DraftKings (DKNG): separate betting activity from revenue and profit, test management’s growth assumptions, and build a valuation around current data and clear risks.

Evaluate DraftKings (Nasdaq: DKNG) by testing whether its customer activity can become durable revenue, GAAP profit and cash flow—and whether the share price adequately reflects the risks and growth required. A single quarter’s handle, an adjusted EBITDA figure or a market multiple cannot answer that question on its own. The framework below uses DraftKings’ Q2 2026 results, released August 6, 2026, and its FY2025 annual filing; it is an analytical process, not an individualized buy or sell recommendation.

What businesses are you evaluating?

DraftKings describes itself as a digital sports entertainment and gaming company. Its reported offerings include online and retail Sportsbook, iGaming (online casino), daily fantasy sports, digital lottery courier, prediction markets and other products. These activities do not necessarily share the same regulation, costs or profit characteristics, so the value of the company depends partly on the mix of business—not just the overall growth rate.

Sports revenue includes sportsbook and prediction-market activity. DraftKings defines Sports Consumer Volume as settled customer wagers or trades, and Sports Net Revenue Margin as Sports revenue divided by that volume. Volume is a measure of activity, not revenue or profit: revenue reflects how activity is monetized, while profit also depends on promotions, operating costs, taxes and other expenses. Treat these measures as separate steps in the business model.

Check where products can legally operate

Market access is jurisdiction-specific. In its August 2026 Q2 release, DraftKings reported mobile sports betting in 27 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, together representing approximately 53% of the U.S. population. It reported iGaming in five states, representing approximately 11% of the U.S. population. The same release said sportsbook and iGaming were available in Canadian provinces representing approximately 51% of that population following an Alberta launch. These are company-reported footprint figures as of that release, not permanent counts or a measure of the revenue available to DraftKings in each place.

For each jurisdiction, investigate whether the product is permitted, what license or market structure applies, and how taxes affect the economics. A larger legal footprint can create room to grow, but a new market is not automatically attractive if access costs, taxes or competition make returns unattractive.

What do the latest results say about growth and profitability?

DraftKings’ August 6, 2026 Q2 release illustrates why activity and revenue need to be read together. The figures below are company-reported and compare the second quarter of 2026 with the second quarter of 2025.

Measure Q2 2026 Q2 2025 comparison What to examine
Sports Consumer Volume $13.140 billion $11.475 billion; Q2 2026 was up 14.5% year over year Customer wagering and trading activity, not revenue or profit.
Total revenue $1.443 billion $1.513 billion; Q2 2026 was down 4.6% year over year How activity translated into reported revenue across products.
Net income (loss) attributable to common stockholders Net loss of $67.610 million Net income of $157.936 million GAAP results, including expenses and items that adjusted measures may treat differently.
Adjusted EBITDA $114.597 million $300.644 million A company-defined non-GAAP measure; review its reconciliation to GAAP results.
Monthly unique payers (MUPs) and average revenue per MUP 3.6 million MUPs; average revenue per MUP of $132 MUPs were approximately 9% higher year over year; average revenue per MUP was approximately 13% lower Customer reach and monetization per payer. DraftKings attributed the lower average primarily to sports outcomes and new-customer promotions.

DraftKings attributed the quarterly revenue decline primarily to customer-friendly sports outcomes and increased promotional reinvestment in customer acquisition for Sportsbook and Predictions. That explanation is useful context, not a reason to disregard the outcome: investors still need to judge how much volatility the business can absorb and whether acquired customers remain valuable after promotions. Compare activity, revenue, net revenue margin, payer trends and costs over multiple periods rather than extrapolating one quarter.

Separate GAAP results from management’s adjusted measure

Adjusted EBITDA can help investors follow the company’s chosen operating-performance measure, but it is not a substitute for GAAP net income or loss, nor does it establish cash generated for shareholders. Read the company’s definition and reconciliation, then examine cash-flow statements, capital needs, debt and interest expense. Also track stock-based compensation and share-count changes: dilution can reduce each existing shareholder’s portion of the business even when operating measures improve.

For a longer-period reference, DraftKings’ FY2025 investor-relations summary reported 10.9 million customers, $6.1 billion in revenue and $620 million in adjusted EBITDA. “Customers” is not the same measure as quarterly monthly unique payers. Consult the FY2025 Form 10-K for audited GAAP results, definitions, reconciliations and business detail rather than treating headline figures as a full financial analysis.

How should you assess DraftKings’ guidance and growth plans?

In its August 2026 Q2 release, management maintained FY2026 guidance of $6.5 billion to $6.9 billion in revenue and $700 million to $900 million in adjusted EBITDA. These are projections, not achieved results. Compare subsequent reported performance with the range, and assess whether any change reflects customer growth, promotions, sports outcomes, product mix, taxes or costs. Guidance for adjusted EBITDA does not, by itself, establish future GAAP earnings or cash flow.

DraftKings CEO and Co-founder Jason Robins characterized Q2 in the August 6, 2026 release as a “strong second quarter” with momentum in handle, users and engagement. That is management’s assessment; the same release reported lower year-over-year revenue and adjusted EBITDA. Put management commentary alongside reported measures and the company’s explanations, not in place of them.

Test the proposed Sports & Casino Super App

In a March 2026 company announcement, DraftKings outlined a proposed integrated Sports & Casino Super App bringing together Sportsbook, Predictions, Casino and Lottery through a phased integration plan. Management also stated an expectation of at least a 30% long-term adjusted EBITDA margin and described a $55 billion to $80 billion 2030 industry gross-revenue opportunity. These are forward-looking management expectations—not realized DraftKings results, an independent market forecast or a guaranteed outcome.

Before assigning value to the proposal, monitor whether the rollout occurs as described and whether it improves customer retention, cross-selling and acquisition costs without requiring unsustainable promotions. Track realized unit economics and the contribution of each product; an industry opportunity estimate is not the same as DraftKings’ obtainable revenue or profit.

How can you build a valuation rather than rely on a headline multiple?

Valuation depends on the price investors pay for future results. A price-to-sales or enterprise-value-to-revenue ratio is only meaningful alongside assumptions about growth, margins, cash conversion, capital needs and dilution. Analyst targets or a peer’s multiple do not establish fair value.

  1. Set a consistent market-data date. Obtain the share price and fully diluted share count for that date. Calculate market capitalization as share price multiplied by shares, and enterprise value using a consistent definition that accounts for debt and cash. Do not combine figures captured on different dates without noting the mismatch.
  2. Model revenue by driver. Make explicit assumptions for payer growth and retention, revenue per payer, product mix, market access and promotional intensity. Distinguish the number of customers from monthly unique payers and from sports activity.
  3. Translate revenue into shareholder economics. Estimate operating costs, taxes, interest, stock-based compensation, capital needs and cash flow. Compare those estimates with GAAP results and the company’s adjusted EBITDA reconciliation; do not assume adjusted EBITDA converts directly into cash available to shareholders.
  4. Build downside, base and upside cases. Vary customer retention, promotions, sports outcomes, iGaming contribution, state launches, taxes and prediction-market economics. State which assumptions drive the differences and whether the share price would still make sense if growth or margins fall short.
  5. Compare peers only after checking comparability. Align geography, product mix, licensing model, profitability and capital structure before comparing growth rates or valuation multiples. Competition and regulatory differences make an unadjusted headline comparison potentially misleading.

As a dated illustration—not a current quote or a valuation conclusion—StockAnalysis.com reported a DKNG closing share price of $19.75 on October 6, 2026, with market-capitalization and valuation statistics updated on that date. Aggregators can differ in timing and calculation. Refresh the price, share count and financial inputs before using any ratio; the cited price alone says nothing about intrinsic value.

Which risks could undermine the investment case?

DraftKings’ FY2025 Form 10-K identifies risks that connect directly to the assumptions in a valuation. Consider how each could affect customer demand, revenue conversion, costs or the value of the shares:

  • Regulation and taxes: Legal availability, licenses, state-specific tax rates and market structures influence where the company can operate and whether expansion is economically beneficial. Growth forecasts that assume new access should account for the possibility that a jurisdiction remains unavailable or returns less than expected.
  • Competition and discretionary spending: Rivals compete for consumer attention, and gaming spending can be affected by household budgets. Winning customers may require promotions or marketing that reduce the revenue retained by the company.
  • Sports outcomes and hold rates: Customer-favorable results can reduce revenue even when activity rises. A sound forecast should allow for outcome variability instead of treating a favorable period as a repeatable margin.
  • Technology, privacy and cybersecurity: Service reliability and obligations to protect customer information are operational requirements. Disruption or security failures can create costs and damage customer trust.
  • Share-price volatility and governance: The filing warns of volatility in the Class A stock and identifies controlled-company governance as a risk. Investors should understand the relevant voting and control arrangements in the filing, as well as the possibility of sharp price movements.
  • Forecast uncertainty: Company projections rely on assumptions and may differ materially from actual outcomes. Treat guidance and strategic targets as scenarios to test, not as facts already earned.

What should you compare before deciding?

When comparing DKNG with another public operator, use the same reporting periods and market-data date, then examine each company across these dimensions:

  • Jurisdictions and product footprint, including the legal and tax conditions attached to access.
  • Revenue growth and business mix, distinguishing activity measures from reported revenue.
  • Customer acquisition, retention and promotional intensity.
  • Revenue margin and sensitivity to sports outcomes.
  • GAAP profitability and cash conversion alongside reconciled non-GAAP measures.
  • Debt, dilution and capital requirements.
  • Valuation against defensible assumptions for growth, margins and risk.

A peer with a lower or higher multiple is not automatically cheaper or more expensive if its markets, products, licensing structure or profitability differ. The comparison is useful only after those differences are made explicit.

A practical pre-investment checklist

  • Can you explain how DraftKings turns each major product’s customer activity into revenue and, ultimately, cash flow?
  • Have you reviewed the latest GAAP statements and the reconciliation behind adjusted EBITDA?
  • Are your growth assumptions consistent with market access, customer retention, promotional spending and competition?
  • Have you modeled weaker sports outcomes, slower expansion, higher taxes or lower margins—not just the favorable case?
  • Are your share price, share count and valuation inputs current and drawn from a consistent date?
  • Can you explain why your valuation case remains plausible if management’s projections or strategic plans are not achieved?
