As of October 7, 2026, USDA had not released the October crop outlook: its October World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report was scheduled for October 9 at noon Eastern. The latest published WASDE figures cited here are from September, when USDA cut its U.S. corn production estimate but raised its soybean estimate. So a claim that October USDA figures cut both crops—or cut them more than expected—is not yet confirmed.
What USDA’s October report can—and cannot—confirm yet
USDA’s World Agricultural Outlook Board describes WASDE as a monthly outlook for U.S. and world agricultural supply and use, including coarse grains and oilseeds. The agency’s WASDE report page and release calendar scheduled the October 2026 report for October 9 at 12:00 p.m. Eastern. As of October 7, its October production estimates were not available.
That timing matters because the headline claim has two separate parts: that USDA lowered both corn and soybean production, and that the cuts were larger than expected. Neither can be established from the September figures. A comparison with market expectations would also require a documented pre-report consensus; none is established in the available sources.
What the September USDA estimates showed
The September WASDE report, released September 11, gave opposite month-over-month signals for the two crops:

| Crop and marketing year | September production estimate | Change from August | Related yield estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| U.S. corn, 2026/27 | 15.8 billion bushels | Down 213 million bushels | 178.5 bushels per acre, down 2.2 bushels |

Agri-Pulse reported the corn estimate and soybean increase from USDA’s September release; DTN reported the September yield figures and soybean production estimate. These are September values, not findings from the October report. See Agri-Pulse’s September 11 report and DTN’s September 11 report.
Keep crop production separate from old-crop stocks
A production estimate measures the crop being forecast; stocks measure grain held in storage at a specified date. USDA’s September 30 National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) release reported 2.10 billion bushels of corn stocks on hand September 1, 2026, 35% above a year earlier. It also revised its estimates of completed 2025 production downward: corn by less than 1% and soybeans slightly. Those figures concern old-crop stocks and prior-season production, not October estimates for the 2026/27 crop. The details are in the USDA NASS September 30 release.

How to judge the October numbers when they are released
To assess whether USDA cut production and whether a cut exceeded expectations, compare like with like in the October WASDE against the September WASDE, then evaluate the market-expectations claim separately:
- Check production month over month. Record the October estimate for each crop and subtract the September estimate. A lower figure is a cut; a higher figure is an increase.
- Separate yield from harvested area. Production can change because USDA adjusts expected yield, harvested acreage, or both. Don’t attribute the full change to yield without checking the report’s components.
- Identify the expectations baseline. “More than expected” requires a pre-release consensus from a named publisher or survey, with its date and figures. A USDA-to-USDA comparison alone cannot establish that claim.
- Check the supply-and-use balance. Look at whether USDA also changed use, imports, exports, or ending stocks. Production and ending stocks are different measures, and a production cut does not by itself establish how the overall balance changed.
USDA’s NASS Agricultural Statistics Board Briefings index identifies released crop reports; it is useful for distinguishing NASS crop-statistics releases from WASDE supply-and-use outlooks.
