The “billions” in the Wells Fargo headline refer to a 2022 Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) enforcement order—not one open class-action settlement for all customers. Wells Fargo was ordered to provide more than $2 billion in consumer redress, separately from a $1.7 billion civil penalty. The CFPB says eligible consumers are notified and do not need to file a claim to receive redress.
What the Wells Fargo billions refer to
On December 20, 2022, the CFPB issued an enforcement order against Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. It required the bank to pay more than $2 billion in consumer redress and a separate $1.7 billion civil penalty. The penalty is not a pool of individual customer payments. The order addressed conduct involving auto loans, mortgages, and deposit accounts. Read the CFPB enforcement record.
The CFPB’s 2023 consumer guide says the practices affected customers between 2011 and 2022 and involved more than 16 million accounts. That is the CFPB’s count of accounts subject to the practices—not a count of eligible people or payments. Read the CFPB consumer guidance.
Which customers may have been affected
The order and CFPB guide describe several categories of harm. These examples explain the remediation areas; they are not a complete eligibility test, and the public guidance does not establish whether a particular person qualifies.

Auto loans
- Payments that were misapplied, or fees, interest, and other charges that were incorrect.
- Wrongful repossessions.
- Failure to refund certain prepaid dealer fees when a refund was warranted.
- Some GAP coverage refunds when a loan ended early, such as after an early payoff.
For customers affected by auto repossessions, the CFPB said in its 2023 guide that at least $4,000 could be reimbursed. That figure applies to the specific repossession category; it is not a promised payment for every customer.
Mortgages
- Improper denials of loan modifications.
- Miscalculated or unwarranted charges and wrongful foreclosure-related practices.
- Cases described in the CFPB guide in which borrowers were reported as deceased or attorney fees were overstated.
The CFPB’s 2023 guide said $77.2 million was for approximately 3,200 customers with mortgage-modification issues. It also says individual payments vary; the published figures do not establish a standard amount for any borrower.

Deposit accounts
- Certain unfair overdraft charges.
- Misleading statements about waivers of monthly service fees.
- Account freezes when a less restrictive response was available.
Do you need to file a claim?
No claim form is required for eligible consumers to receive the redress described in the CFPB order. The CFPB says Wells Fargo must notify eligible consumers, who do not need to take action to receive payment. That does not mean every current or former customer is eligible: eligibility depends on the relevant harm and the bank’s records.
How to check on a missing payment
- Contact Wells Fargo. The CFPB consumer guide lists 844-484-5089, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. Eastern Time, for people who believe they qualify but have not received money. Verify the current number and hours through the CFPB guide before calling, because contact details can change.
- Keep a record of your inquiry. Note the date, the contact channel, and any reference number or instructions Wells Fargo provides. Use the bank’s official channels; do not rely on an unsolicited caller or text to establish eligibility.
- Submit a CFPB complaint if the issue remains unresolved. The CFPB guide directs consumers to its online complaint process and lists (855) 411-2372 as its consumer complaint number. The CFPB’s online complaint route is available through its consumer guidance page.
How to recognize a redress scam
The CFPB warns: “If anyone claims they can get you compensation or asks for money upfront, it’s a scam.” The agency says it never requires payment to receive redress and does not ask for account information or personal data to send a payment or before cashing a CFPB-issued check. Do not pay a “claims helper” to unlock money or share sensitive information in response to an unsolicited message. See the CFPB’s warning.

How this differs from a class-action settlement
The CFPB matter is a regulatory enforcement order with remediation for eligible consumers. A court-approved class action is different: it has a defined class, a court-supervised settlement process, and may require a claim or follow a separate administrator’s notice and deadlines. The two processes do not share eligibility rules or payment totals.
For example, the SEB Investment Management securities class action concerns Wells Fargo investors and a defined stock-purchase class period; its administrator reported a third distribution on September 18, 2026. That investor case is separate from consumer redress under the CFPB order. Its dates and eligibility rules do not apply to the CFPB action. See the SEB settlement administrator’s site.

A separate Wells Fargo regulatory update
On March 5, 2026, the Federal Reserve announced that it had terminated its 2018 enforcement action against Wells Fargo after determining the required conditions had been met. The Fed said remediation work had spanned nearly a decade and that the asset cap was removed in 2025. This is institutional regulatory context; it does not determine whether an individual consumer qualifies for or has received CFPB redress. Read the Federal Reserve announcement.
