The IMF says overall bank capital and liquidity appear adequate, but financial-stability risks remain elevated and mid-sized and smaller banks face greater credit-quality concerns than large state-owned banks. System-wide figures are not a safety assessment of any individual stock.
How could borrower stress affect a bank?
Property and local-government exposures
A property downturn can affect banks through developers that struggle to repay, households and businesses exposed to falling or weak property markets, and loans secured by property. LGFVs—entities used by local governments to finance projects—also matter where their debt-servicing capacity is weak. The IMF identifies the property-sector correction and LGFV debt overhang as material financial vulnerabilities. A local-government debt swap and other policy measures have helped mitigate some risks, but do not eliminate banks’ exposure.
Exposure is not the same as a loss already recognized on the books. The relevant question is how much a particular bank has lent to these borrowers, how repayment prospects are changing, and what collateral, restructuring or provisions may reduce the eventual loss. Stress can also reach smaller businesses: the IMF notes that SME lending has risen steeply in recent years and could add credit risk under pressure.
Other borrowers and concentrations
Look beyond aggregate loan growth. Regional banks may have concentrated portfolios, while pressure has been noted in some retail, credit-card, micro- and small-enterprise lending. A bank concentrated in one region, borrower segment or funding source may be more exposed to a local shock than a diversified peer. The IMF reports greater credit-quality concerns at mid-sized and smaller banks than at large state-owned banks; that comparison does not establish the condition of any named lender.

Do reported loan ratios show the full picture?
Not by themselves. The IMF’s January 2026 Article IV report gives commercial-bank non-performing loan (NPL) and special-mention-loan ratios of 1.5% and 2.2%, respectively, as of 2025 Q3. These are aggregate, dated system indicators—not current readings for an individual bank or a forecast. The report also says loss loans, defined as loans whose principal and interest cannot be recovered, were about 40% of NPLs.
Interpret those measures alongside the way loans are restructured, written off and provisioned. The IMF says bad-asset disposal helped offset new NPL inflows and warns that expanded forbearance covering property, LGFVs, medium-sized enterprises and retail borrowers may veil underlying asset quality or delay loss recognition. Its 2025 Financial System Stability Assessment also describes weaknesses in disclosure and opacity around NPL inflows and loss deferral. Those are reasons to scrutinize disclosures, not evidence that a particular bank has concealed losses.

- Disclosed property, LGFV, SME and other concentrated borrower exposures.
- How loss recognition and asset disposals affect reported trends.
Can earnings, capital and funding absorb a shock?
Loan quality is only part of the risk. Lower lending rates and weak credit demand can squeeze the spread between loan yields and funding costs. The IMF says lending rates fell more than funding costs during the period it assessed, contributing to profitability pressure. Weaker earnings mean less internally generated capital to absorb future losses; regional banks with concentrated business models face particular pressure, including competition for deposits and loans.

- Package: 1 bundle of paper money, 100 sheets per bundle. Each sheet measures about 5.9*2.9 inches (15*7.4 cm). Another 1 sheet of ancestor gold paper and 2 gold foil paper ingots are given. This currency is colourful and easy to burn.
- The synonyms of Ancestor Money are Spirit Money, Joss Paper, Hell Money,Heaven notes, etc. It is hoped that the departed loved ones can use this ‘note’ to live a better life and find love again in the other world. It is also hoped that the ancestors will also bless you and bring you good luck.
- Ancestor money can be burned for funerals, ancestors' birthdays, Ching Ming Festival (4 April), Ghost Festival, and holidays or any day when you miss them terribly and need energy. (Write what you want to say to them on the Ancestor Gold paper and burn it with the Ancestor Money.)
- Whether you use it in an ancestral spirit communication ceremony or as a teaching tool to educate on the tradition of honouring your ancestors, our Ancestor Money is a profound cultural object. In addition, it can be used as a unique decoration or a thoughtful gift for those who appreciate philosophy and spirituality.
- Note: Chinese Ancestor Money is not legal tender issued by any bank or government agency and has no cash value. They are usually burnt to dedicate to the ancestors and to pray for blessings of prosperity and good luck. Safety is always a priority when burning ancestral money. Burn in a well-ventilated area, preferably in a metal container, and make sure the embers are completely extinguished when you are finished. Never leave the burning process unattended
Compare net interest margin, return on assets, earnings mix, capital composition and funding mix over the same reporting periods. Consider whether the bank relies heavily on a narrow set of depositors or other funding sources, and whether its profits can replenish capital if credit costs rise. An IMF assessment of adequate capital and liquidity overall does not settle whether a particular bank has enough of either.
How should you compare two Chinese banks?
Use the same period and definitions for each institution. The following questions help prevent a headline ratio or a large-bank reputation from substituting for bank-specific analysis.

| Area | What to examine | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Borrower exposures | Property, LGFV, SME and regional concentrations | Shows where repayment stress could be concentrated. |
| Asset quality | NPLs, special-mention loans, write-offs, provisions and restructuring | Helps distinguish recognized problem loans from broader or deferred stress. |
| Profitability | Net interest margin, return on assets and earnings mix | Indicates the capacity to generate capital internally under pressure. |
| Capital and liquidity | Capital composition and buffers; funding mix and concentration | Shows the resources and funding resilience available to absorb shocks. |
| Governance and disclosure | Ownership, reporting detail and explanations of asset-quality changes | Helps assess how much confidence to place in comparisons and reported trends. |
| Security and access | Share class, listing venue, trading currency, broker route and applicable protections | Determines the legal, operational and market-access features of the instrument you would actually hold. |
What risks depend on your share class and investment route?
Check the exact instrument and market access
A mainland A-share, a Hong Kong-listed H-share and any other instrument should be assessed as the specific security, not assumed to provide identical trading, currency, disclosure or investor protections. HKEX’s Stock Connect program provides access to selected eligible A-shares and ETFs, not every mainland-listed security; eligibility, participant rules, quota arrangements and permitted trading activities can matter. Verify the current status of the particular security and the settlement conditions through your broker and the relevant market rules.
HKEX reported that international investors held around RMB 2.6 trillion, or 71% of their shareholdings, through Stock Connect at end-2025. That figure describes the route’s share of international investors’ holdings, not Chinese bank assets, returns or the eligibility of any particular bank stock.

Consider legal, regulatory and currency issues
The SEC’s guidance on China-based issuers identifies potential legal and regulatory uncertainty, changing laws and inconsistent interpretation or enforcement, government influence, differences in governance and reporting, and limits on currency conversion or moving capital. It also notes that pursuing claims against China-based issuers or enforcing foreign judgments may be difficult. Treat these as due-diligence prompts: their relevance depends on the issuer, security and investor’s jurisdiction. The guidance is broad; it does not establish that a particular Chinese bank share uses a variable-interest-entity structure.
For U.S.-traded securities, check audit-related status
The Holding Foreign Companies Accountable Act (HFCAA) creates a potential U.S. trading prohibition for a company identified by the SEC for two consecutive years. Investor.gov’s bulletin said that, as of its publication, the PCAOB could inspect and investigate completely PCAOB-registered firms headquartered in mainland China and Hong Kong. Audit-related status can change. Before relying on a general statement about Chinese issuers, check the latest PCAOB determination and the SEC’s current Commission-identified issuer list for the specific security.
What to verify before placing an order
- Identify the exact security. Confirm the bank, share class, listing venue and trading currency shown by your broker.
- Read the bank’s latest filings. Match the reporting period and definitions for asset quality, provisions, exposures, earnings, capital and funding.
- Assess exposure and loss recognition together. Consider concentrations alongside restructuring, write-offs and provisions rather than relying on a single NPL figure.
- Confirm access and investor protections. Check current eligibility, settlement arrangements and relevant rules for your chosen broker route and jurisdiction.
- For U.S. securities, check current audit-related lists. Use the latest SEC and PCAOB information rather than assuming a past status remains unchanged.
These checks can clarify which risks apply to the investment you are considering, but they do not establish a valuation or make a buy-or-sell decision for you.
