Super Bowl Commercials vs. Streaming Ads: Which Reaches a Larger Audience?

A Super Bowl commercial can concentrate a huge U.S. audience into one event. Streaming is a substantial ad-supported TV environment, but its overall viewing share is not a campaign reach estimate.

For a single U.S. moment of mass exposure, a Super Bowl commercial can put a brand in front of an exceptionally large audience. Nielsen estimated that Super Bowl LIX averaged 127.713 million viewers on February 9, 2025. Streaming, meanwhile, accounted for 46.6% of ad-supported TV viewing in Q1 2026. Those figures measure different things: an event audience versus a share of viewing. Neither tells an advertiser how many unique people a particular campaign will reach, what it will cost, or what results it will produce.

What the audience figures actually show

Super Bowl: a concentrated event audience

Nielsen estimated that Super Bowl LIX averaged 127.713 million viewers on February 9, 2025, across FOX, FOX Deportes, Telemundo, and Tubi, with the measurement also including out-of-home and digital viewing. Nielsen’s February 11, 2025 report described it as the largest Super Bowl audience and single-network telecast audience in TV history.

The game reached a peak of 137.7 million viewers between 8:00 and 8:15 p.m. ET, and its average audience was 3.2% higher than the previous year, according to Nielsen’s March 18, 2025 report. The peak is a brief high point, not the average audience or the number of people an individual ad reached. The year-over-year increase describes that event’s historical result, not a forecast for future games.

Streaming: a large share of ad-supported TV viewing

In Q1 2026, streaming represented 46.6% of ad-supported TV viewing, according to Nielsen’s June 23, 2026 Ad Supported Gauge report. This establishes that streaming is a substantial part of the ad-supported TV environment. It does not mean that a streaming campaign reaches 46.6% of viewers, or provide the unique audience for a particular advertiser, platform, or placement.

How the two options compare

Decision factor Super Bowl commercial Streaming ads
Audience pattern A major live event can concentrate a very large audience at one time; Super Bowl LIX averaged 127.713 million viewers in 2025, by Nielsen’s cross-platform estimate. Streaming made up 46.6% of ad-supported TV viewing in Q1 2026, a category-level share rather than a campaign reach figure.
Timing Placement is tied to a specific event and its schedule. Inventory is distributed across platforms and programming; the cited figure does not quantify reach for a specific campaign or flight.
Reach comparison The event estimate covers multiple outlets and viewing contexts, including broadcast, Tubi, digital, and out-of-home. The category share does not identify unique people reached by a campaign.
Measurement Nielsen’s event estimate has a stated event and platform scope. Cross-media measurement can help deduplicate audiences across linear TV, streaming, and digital; the actual method and coverage depend on the measurement used.
Cost and outcomes Comparable current pricing and campaign outcome benchmarks are not stated in the cited sources. Comparable current pricing and campaign outcome benchmarks are not stated in the cited sources.

Which option fits your campaign?

Consider the Super Bowl for a shared, high-concentration moment

A Super Bowl placement is worth evaluating when the objective is broad U.S. exposure around one widely watched event. The audience evidence supports the scale of that moment, but it does not establish that the placement will be cost-effective or achieve a particular business result. Judge the proposed buy against your campaign objective and the audience definition the seller uses.

Evaluate streaming with campaign-specific delivery estimates

Streaming is a meaningful part of ad-supported TV viewing, but the category-wide share is not enough to plan a buy. Ask sellers for estimates tied to the specific platforms, programs, dates, audience, and inventory in the proposal. Do not assume the overall share translates into the reach of an individual campaign.

What to request before comparing media plans

  1. Set a consistent comparison. Ask each seller to use the same geography, audience definition, and campaign dates.
  2. Request unique reach and frequency. Find out how many distinct people the plan is expected to reach and how often, rather than comparing raw impressions or a headline audience figure.
  3. Ask how audiences are deduplicated. A person may watch across broadcast, streaming, and digital. Nielsen describes cross-media measurement intended to provide a deduplicated view across those channels; ask what method and coverage the seller’s estimate uses. See Nielsen’s cross-media measurement overview.
  4. Compare cost against the same reach definition. Request cost per reached person using the same audience and measurement assumptions for both proposals.
  5. Separate delivery from results. Ask what evidence, if any, supports expected brand or business outcomes. A large audience estimate alone does not establish campaign effectiveness.

Why Super Bowl viewing totals are not ad-performance results

Nielsen reported that Super Bowl Sunday 2025 generated more than 110 billion total-day TV viewing minutes. During the game, Tubi accounted for one-third of all streaming usage and rose to nearly 16 times its January 2025 average, according to Nielsen’s March 2025 analysis. These figures describe viewing behavior around the event; they do not show how many people saw a particular ad or whether an ad caused a response.
