If your floating-rate loan EMI has increased, first ask your lender for the revised rate and repayment schedule. Then compare the available choices—pay a higher EMI, extend the loan tenor, combine both, switch to a fixed rate if offered, or prepay—by their effect on monthly cash flow, total interest and fees, and payoff date. The applicable RBI reset directions cover EMI-based floating-rate personal loans and, with appropriate adaptation, other equated-instalment loans; confirm how they apply to your particular loan.
1. Verify what changed
A floating-rate loan can change when its linked benchmark or index changes. Your lender may respond by increasing the EMI, extending the tenor, or using both approaches; an increase in the rate does not necessarily mean the EMI must rise. Check your loan agreement and ask the lender to identify the benchmark, applicable spread, reset frequency and date, and revised interest rate.
For background on floating rates and lender comparisons, see the RBI’s borrower guidance on home loans. It explains that repayment can be adjusted through EMI or tenure. The actual impact on your loan depends on its terms and the lender’s revised schedule.
2. Request the revised figures and schedule
Ask the lender to provide the revised amortization schedule and reconcile it with the previous one. You need enough detail to compare options, not just the new monthly payment.

For loans within its scope, the RBI’s August 18, 2023 directions on EMI-based floating-rate personal loans require lenders to communicate an increase in EMI or tenor promptly and make quarterly statements accessible. Those statements must include loan balance repayment details, remaining EMIs, and the annualized rate or APR. The directions were updated as of October 1, 2025.
3. Compare a higher EMI with a longer tenor
These choices trade monthly affordability against time in debt and total cost. A higher EMI puts more pressure on your monthly budget but may avoid stretching repayment over a longer period. A longer tenor reduces the monthly outflow but increases total interest and the overall cost of the loan, according to the RBI’s borrower guidance.

Ask the lender for a revised schedule under each available option and compare the total expected interest and fees, not just the EMI. The rupee difference depends on your outstanding balance, rate, remaining term, and when the change takes effect; there is no single saving or cost figure that applies to every borrower.
4. Check whether fixed-rate conversion is available
Do not assume you can automatically switch to a fixed rate. Under the RBI reset directions, a regulated lender may, at its option and under a board-approved policy, offer a choice to switch at a rate reset. Ask for the written terms, including how many switches are allowed, how long the fixed rate lasts, what happens after that period, and any conversion or administrative charges. Applicable charges must be disclosed under the directions.

5. Consider part-prepayment or full prepayment
For loans covered by the RBI reset directions, borrowers are to be given the choice to prepay part or all of the balance at any point during the tenor, with charges governed by applicable instructions. Request the lender’s current written fee disclosure and ask how a part-prepayment would affect the EMI, remaining tenor, or both.
Weigh the reduction in loan cost against the cash you would use. Keep enough liquidity for essential expenses and emergencies; whether prepayment makes sense depends on your circumstances, loan terms, and charges.

6. Compare repricing or a balance transfer
Ask your existing lender whether it can reprice the loan, then compare any written offer with offers from other lenders. The RBI’s borrower guidance recommends comparing interest rates, terms, and all charges. For a balance transfer, include processing, legal, and administrative costs, the new loan’s terms and remaining repayment period, and your eligibility. Compare the total cost of switching with the cost of staying—not only the headline rate or EMI.

8. Challenge an unexplained change in writing
If the revised rate, EMI, or tenor does not match the loan agreement or the lender’s explanation, ask for a written reconciliation and a copy of the calculation or schedule used. Keep the rate-change notice, statements, schedules, and your complaint reference. Start with the lender’s current complaint process and check the latest RBI guidance for any available escalation route and eligibility; complaint procedures can change.
