The best Humana Medicare Advantage plan for you is the one available in your ZIP code that covers the care and prescriptions you use at a cost and under rules you can manage. Compare local plans by provider network, medications, likely yearly spending, benefits and plan rules—not by premium or extra benefits alone.
Start with plans available in your ZIP code
Medicare Advantage availability and plan details vary by location. Humana announced that its 2026 Medicare Advantage offerings would span 46 states and Washington, D.C., covering 85% of U.S. counties. That national footprint does not mean every plan is offered at every address. Enter your ZIP code in Humana’s plan-shopping tool to see local options.
Humana also said more than 80% of its Medicare Advantage members would be in plans with “stable benefits.” That is Humana’s description of its 2026 offerings, not a guarantee that every benefit, cost or plan rule stayed the same. Review the current documents for each plan you are considering.

Check doctors, hospitals and network rules
Make a list of your primary care clinician, specialists, preferred hospitals and regular clinics. Check each against the directory for the exact plan, and confirm participation with the provider if needed. A provider’s participation in one Humana plan does not establish participation in another.

#1 Best Overall
As a general guide, Humana says HMO plans usually limit routine care to the network and may require referrals. PPO plans may cover out-of-network care at higher cost, while in-network care can cost less. The individual plan’s terms control, including any exceptions and referral requirements.
| Plan type | General trade-off | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| HMO | Generally uses a contracted network; out-of-network routine care is usually limited and referrals may be required. | Named providers, referral rules, service area and exceptions. |
| PPO | May allow out-of-network care, often at higher cost; in-network care can cost less. | Out-of-network coverage and cost sharing, and whether providers accept the plan. |
| PFFS | Payment terms and provider acceptance matter; rules differ by plan. | Whether each provider accepts the plan’s terms and the exact cost sharing. |
| SNP | Designed for people who meet specific eligibility criteria; may be an HMO or PPO. | Eligibility, network, drug coverage and additional plan-specific rules. |
These are broad distinctions, not substitutes for contract-specific terms. See Humana’s plan comparison guide and verify details in the documents for the plan you are evaluating.
Price your actual prescriptions
Most Medicare Advantage plans include Part D prescription coverage, but covered drugs and costs differ. Use Medicare Plan Finder with each medication’s name and strength and the pharmacies you use. Compare whether each drug is covered, its tier, any restrictions and estimated annual cost. Then confirm those details in the plan’s current formulary and pharmacy network.
Estimate yearly costs, not just the premium
Compare the monthly premium alongside deductibles, primary care and specialist copays, hospital and diagnostic costs, prescription spending, and the annual maximum out-of-pocket amount for covered medical services. A $0 premium or $0 copay does not mean all care is free.

Build two estimates for each plan: one based on the care you expect in a typical year and another for a year when you need more care. Current plan-specific amounts should come from the plan’s documents and Medicare’s comparison results; there is no single cost figure that describes all Humana plans for 2026.
Read the details behind extra benefits
Humana’s 2026 announcement says all of its Medicare Advantage plans include dental, vision and hearing coverage. The announcement does not establish the allowance, covered services, provider network, frequency limits or your share of costs for a particular plan. Check the Summary of Benefits and Evidence of Coverage for those details, including any eligibility rules or limits, before valuing an extra benefit in your comparison.

Use star ratings as one input
Medicare rates Medicare Advantage and Part D plans annually on a five-star scale. A rating can inform your comparison, but it cannot tell you whether a specific doctor is in network or a medication is covered. The sources cited here do not establish a rating for any particular Humana contract for 2026; check the current listing rather than relying on a company-wide rating.
A practical comparison sequence
- Find local options: Enter your ZIP code in Humana’s shopping tool and select the 2026 plans available to you.
- Check your care team: Compare your clinicians, hospitals and clinics with each exact plan directory; ask providers to confirm participation if unclear.
- Check prescriptions: Enter your medications and pharmacies in Medicare Plan Finder, then confirm coverage, restrictions and pharmacy participation in the plan’s current materials.
- Compare spending: Review premiums, deductibles, copays, coinsurance and the medical out-of-pocket maximum. Estimate both typical and higher-use years.
- Verify benefits and rules: Read the Summary of Benefits and Evidence of Coverage for the exact plan, including extra-benefit limits, referral requirements and exclusions.
- Compare alternatives: Consider other local Medicare options as well as Humana plans, using the same doctors, prescriptions and spending assumptions.
Know when you can enroll or switch
Humana’s guide lists the Annual Enrollment Period as October 15 through December 7. It lists the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period as January 1 through March 31 for people already enrolled in Medicare Advantage. Which enrollment opportunities apply to you can depend on your circumstances; confirm your options with Medicare or an authorized counselor.
