You can personalize an iPhone Home Screen without making it harder to use: keep your most-used apps easy to recognize and reach, add only widgets that answer a recurring question or support a frequent action, then adjust colors and icon styles around that layout. On iOS 26, Apple provides built-in controls for icon appearance, widgets, and accessibility settings.
Start with the apps and information you use most
Before changing the look, identify the apps you open often and the information you want to check at a glance. Keep those apps prominent and their identifying cues familiar. This is a practical way to tailor the screen to your routine, not a measured guarantee that one layout works best for everyone.
Once the functional layout feels clear, choose a wallpaper and icon treatment that suit your taste. When comparing options, consider whether labels and widget text remain legible, icons remain recognizable, useful information fits at the chosen size, and frequent apps are still easy for you to find.
Change the appearance of app icons
- On the Home Screen, touch and hold the background until the icons jiggle.
- Tap Edit, then Customize.

- Check whether the result is still easy to navigate, then keep the setting or choose another.
Large icons remove app names. That may suit someone who recognizes apps by their symbols, but it can make identification less immediate if you rely on labels. If you are unsure, keep names visible and make the screen feel personal with color or wallpaper instead.

Add widgets that earn their space
Apple Support describes widgets as “an easy way to view current information from an app at a glance—today’s headlines, weather, reminders, battery levels, and more.” Some widgets also support actions without opening the app, such as completing a reminder or playing a podcast. - Touch and hold the Home Screen background until the icons jiggle.
- Tap Edit, then Add Widget.
- Find an app, choose one of its available widget sizes or styles, and add it.
- Position the widget and tap Done.
Choose a widget if it answers a question you check regularly or makes a common action easier. If it duplicates information you rarely use, remove it. Larger widgets may show more, but take up more space; compare the information displayed with what you give up in app visibility.

Use a Smart Stack only if its behavior suits you
A Smart Stack combines widgets in one area. Apple says it can use factors such as time, location, and activity to surface a widget; you can swipe up or down through the stack to see the others. This can keep several widgets together, but the changing display may be less predictable than a fixed widget for some people. Adjust accessibility settings for the Home Screen
Set visual options for Home Screen & App Library
On iOS, Apple’s Per-App Settings can apply color, text-size, and motion preferences to an individual app or to Home Screen & App Library. To set them for the Home Screen, go to Settings > Accessibility > Per-App Settings, tap Add App, then select Home Screen & App Library. Try motion controls if effects distract or feel uncomfortable
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Motion to review options including Reduce Motion and controls for animated images, video previews, and message effects. These are settings to try if motion effects bother you; their behavior depends on the iOS release and supported features, and they are not medical advice or a guaranteed fix. - Recognition: Does the icon style preserve the cues you use to identify apps?
- Information: Does each widget provide something useful at its chosen size?
- Routine: Can you still locate frequent apps and complete common actions easily?
- Visual preference: Do the wallpaper, tint, and light or dark appearance feel right without getting in the way?
Make one change at a time and use the screen as you normally would. If a new arrangement makes an important app or piece of information harder for you to find, restore the clearer option. The best customization is the one that feels like yours and still works for your habits.
