Android generally offers more visible control over Home Screen layout and icon styling, particularly on Pixel phones. iPhone still has substantial built-in personalization, including adjustable icon appearance, widgets, and customizable Lock Screens. The difference is clearest when you want to change the grid or the look of icons; it is less clear if your priority is a polished wallpaper, widget, and Lock Screen setup.
There is no official feature-count or common test that proves one platform offers more customization overall. Android settings also vary by manufacturer, model, and software version, so Pixel-specific options should not be treated as universal Android features.
How the comparison works
This comparison focuses on built-in phone interface options: Home Screen arrangement, icon appearance, wallpaper and color, widgets, and Lock Screen or quick controls. It does not measure third-party apps or claim that every user values the same kinds of customization.
Apple’s current guidance covers iOS 26. Google’s general Android help warns that steps can vary by device; Pixel support provides a more specific example of what a manufacturer’s Android implementation may offer.

Home Screen layout: Android has the clearer edge
iPhone
On iPhone, you can rearrange apps and widgets and organize Home Screen pages. Apple’s cited guidance supports page and appearance personalization, but does not establish arbitrary Home Screen grid sizing. Do not assume that iPhone offers the same grid controls described for Pixel.
Android and Pixel
Android lets you arrange apps, shortcuts, folders, and widgets across Home Screen pages. On Pixel, Google documents a specific Home Screen grid or layout setting, giving users a more direct way to adjust how items fit on the screen. The exact controls and steps on other Android phones depend on the manufacturer and device. Google’s Android Home Screen help explicitly cautions that instructions can vary by device.

Can you customize app icons on iPhone and Android?
iPhone: built-in appearance treatments
Apple’s iOS 26 instructions let you display Home Screen icons and widgets in small or large sizes and choose light, dark, clear, or tinted appearances. These are built-in system treatments; the guidance does not establish that you can apply an arbitrary replacement icon to every app. See Apple’s instructions for changing app icon and widget appearance.
Pixel: more icon-style controls
Google’s Pixel guidance documents icon styles and shapes, alongside color choices. That gives Pixel a stronger documented case for icon-level tinkering than the options described in Apple’s iPhone guidance. These controls are Pixel-specific evidence, not a promise that every Android launcher or manufacturer offers the same choices. Google’s Pixel customization instructions also note that some theme-pack features have software and region requirements.

Wallpaper and system color
iPhone
iPhone personalization includes Home Screen and Lock Screen wallpapers. On the Home Screen, icon and widget appearance can also be coordinated using the available light, dark, clear, or tinted treatments. Apple’s guidance supports these choices, not a claim that every system element can be recolored independently.
Android and Pixel
Android wallpaper and color options vary by device. On Pixel, Google documents wallpaper-linked color palettes as well as custom color choices and themes. Pixel wallpaper guidance also describes AI-generated and emoji wallpapers and effects, but AI wallpaper is limited to Pixel 8 and later and may be unavailable for some account types. Widgets: both platforms support them, with different evidence
iPhone
Apple documents widgets on the Home Screen and Lock Screen, as well as in Today View and StandBy. Available sizes and actions depend on the widget and its app; some widgets support direct interaction. Apple’s widget instructions explain placement and sizing. Apple Developer’s Human Interface Guidelines describe a widget as providing “quick access to essential information and focused interactions from your app or game” (Widgets).
Android
Android supports Home Screen widgets that users can add and organize. Resizing is possible only when that widget provides resize handles, and some instructions in Google’s guidance apply only to Android 14 or later. The cited Android documentation does not establish a like-for-like comparison of the total widget selection on the two platforms. Google’s Android help covers adding and organizing Home Screen items.

Lock Screen and quick controls
iPhone
Apple documents Lock Screen personalization with a photo or wallpaper, widgets, clock sizing, and alternate controls such as Timer or Voice Memo. You can also add Home Screen widgets and controls to Control Center. Apple cautions that not all features are available on every iPhone model. The current options are described in Apple’s “Make your iPhone your own” guide.
Android
Google documents At a Glance information on the Home Screen or Lock Screen in supported contexts. The cited general Android and Pixel sources do not establish broad, equivalent Lock Screen control across all Android devices, so the experience should be checked for the specific phone rather than inferred from Pixel features.
Which should you choose for customization?
- Choose Android, especially Pixel, if your main goal is to adjust Home Screen grid or layout and experiment with icon styles and shapes.
- Choose iPhone if you want built-in choices for icon and widget appearance, Lock Screen widgets, clock sizing, and alternate Lock Screen controls within Apple’s documented system options.
- Check the exact phone if you are considering Android. Manufacturer, model, and software version can change which controls are available.
That is a feature-based judgment, not an objective ranking of every Android phone against every iPhone. The better fit depends on which parts of the interface you want to change.
