The right choice depends on the task: reading small text, navigating by listening, using touch controls, inspecting nearby print, or reducing motion effects. Start with the feature that addresses your specific barrier, then try it in a low-stakes situation.
Choose a setting by the task you want to make easier
| Everyday need | Feature to try | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Text is too small or difficult to read | Display & Text Size; Read & Speak | Adjust how text appears, or have iPhone speak selected text or onscreen content. Read & Speak works without VoiceOver. |
| You want to navigate the screen by listening | VoiceOver | Speaks interface items and uses a different gesture model for navigating and operating iPhone. |
| Onscreen content needs magnification | Zoom | Enlarges the screen, either full-screen or in a resizable window. |
| You need to inspect nearby print or objects | Magnifier | Uses the iPhone camera to help examine small text and objects close up. |
| Touch gestures are difficult | AssistiveTouch | Provides alternative ways to interact with the touchscreen. |
| Direct touch is not workable | Switch Control | Lets you interact using a switch, including a button on an external adaptive device. |
| Interface motion feels uncomfortable | Reduce Motion | Reduces certain interface motion effects. |
These features solve different problems rather than competing for a single top ranking. A text-size adjustment may be the simplest fit for reading; VoiceOver changes how you navigate the whole interface. A more substantial change is not automatically a better one if it does not match your needs.
For reading, try text adjustments or spoken content
Make text easier to see
Display & Text Size options change how content appears. This is a sensible first step when the main difficulty is seeing or reading onscreen text; it does not replace the usual touch-and-visual navigation model.
Have iPhone read text aloud
Read & Speak can speak selected text or onscreen content without turning on VoiceOver. Try it when listening is more convenient than reading, or when you need spoken access to a particular passage rather than a screen reader for every interaction. Apple’s Display & Text Size guide and spoken-content guide describe the available features.

For listening-based navigation, learn VoiceOver first
VoiceOver is a screen reader that speaks interface items and uses VoiceOver gestures to operate iPhone. It is not simply a read-aloud toggle: Apple warns, “When VoiceOver is on, you must use VoiceOver gestures to operate iPhone.” That change can make ordinary gestures behave differently, so use VoiceOver’s built-in tutorial and practice area before relying on it for everyday tasks. Apple explains setup and practice in its VoiceOver guide.
For magnification, distinguish the screen from the world around you
Use Zoom for screen content
Zoom enlarges what is displayed on iPhone. It can magnify the full screen or use a resizable window, with options for how magnification follows focus. Choose it when the content itself is onscreen and needs enlargement. See Apple’s Zoom guide.

Use Magnifier for nearby print and objects
Magnifier uses the camera to help examine physical items, such as small print or nearby objects. It is different from Zoom: Magnifier looks at the world through the camera, while Zoom enlarges the iPhone display. Apple describes Magnifier in its accessibility features guide.
For difficult touch gestures, choose an input alternative
AssistiveTouch offers alternative touch interactions
AssistiveTouch can help when particular touchscreen gestures are difficult to perform. It is a built-in alternative for interacting with the device, rather than a guarantee that every task or gesture will work identically. Apple’s AssistiveTouch guidance explains the feature.

Switch Control is intended for interacting with iPhone through a switch, including a button on an external adaptive device. An external switch is optional, and its compatibility with a particular iPhone and setup should be verified before purchase or use. Apple’s Switch Control guide covers the feature.
For motion sensitivity, try Reduce Motion
Reduce Motion can reduce interface motion effects. It is a targeted comfort setting: whether the change helps is individual. Apple describes the option in its motion settings guide. It should not be treated as a general performance or battery recommendation.

Make frequently used features easier to reach
Apple supports ways to reach selected accessibility features more quickly, including the Accessibility Shortcut and Control Center. On supported iPhone models, the Action button can also be assigned to Magnifier or an accessibility feature. The exact options and steps depend on the device and current software, so check Apple’s accessibility overview and shortcut instructions for your iPhone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide which one makes the biggest difference
- Identify the task that causes the most friction, such as reading, navigating, touching controls, or viewing nearby print.
- Start with the feature that addresses that task directly; for example, try spoken content before adopting a full screen-reader navigation mode if you only want text read aloud.
- Consider how much the setting changes interaction. VoiceOver changes navigation substantially, while display adjustments change appearance; neither is inherently better for every user.
- Try the feature in a low-stakes setting, and use Apple’s instructions or practice tools before depending on a new interaction method.
- For features that use external input hardware, verify that the specific device and setup are compatible.
Apple’s support material explains what these features do and how to set them up; it does not rank them by measured everyday impact. The best fit is therefore the one that reduces a particular user’s difficulty without adding unwanted complexity. Features may vary by country, region, or language, as Apple notes: “Not all features are available in all countries, regions, or languages.”
