A streaming service changing owners does not automatically cancel your subscription or immediately change your price, app, or access. What happens depends on the service’s transition plan, its terms, and who bills you. Check the service’s official notice and your account before canceling, resubscribing, or assuming your current plan will stay the same.
What a change of ownership means for your subscription
There is no single outcome for subscribers when a streaming company changes ownership. A service may continue under its existing name and terms, transfer subscriptions to a new provider, or move some customers to another product. The agreement, transition notice, and billing arrangement determine what applies to your account.
For example, the HBO Max company update FAQ about Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Skydance coming together as Skydance said there were no immediate changes to the HBO Max or Paramount+ apps, content, subscriptions, pricing, or access. It said subscribers could keep using the services as before and did not need to act right then. The FAQ said it would be updated as information became available, so its statement describes the status at the time of that update—not a guarantee about future plans. Read the HBO Max update FAQ.
What may change—and what may not
Your access may continue, transfer, or end under a transition plan
An ownership change alone does not prove that your subscription has been canceled. Some service terms expressly allow an agreement and subscription to be transferred to an entity that acquires the platform. The discovery+ agreement, for instance, includes such a provision. That is a term of that service’s agreement, not a rule that applies to every streaming subscription. See the discovery+ Terms of Use.

A transition can also involve discontinuing a standalone service. SHOWTIME’s help center described the end of its standalone streaming service and the availability of its programming through Paramount+ with SHOWTIME. Some customers were eligible for automatic transfer; others were directed to contact their provider. The instructions depended on how the subscription was billed. See SHOWTIME’s transition guidance.
Your price can change even if you keep access
Continued access does not guarantee that your current price will remain unchanged. Paramount+’s US terms allow subscription price changes with notice, taking effect at renewal rather than during the current billing period. For a subscription billed through a third party, that provider’s terms may govern price changes. Read Paramount+ US Terms of Use.

The catalog or app may change separately from your subscription
A service can keep your subscription active while changing the programs available. The discovery+ terms say its content changes regularly and may become unavailable when rights-holders restrict or withdraw rights. Check transition notices for separate details about app access, content, plan features, and any bundle; continuity in one area does not establish continuity in all of them. See the discovery+ Terms of Use.
Why your billing provider matters
If you pay through an app store, device platform, channel, bundle, or another company, the streaming service may not handle your billing or cancellation directly. Your billing provider can determine where to manage the subscription and which terms apply to payment, cancellation, or refunds.

- Hulu: Its agreement says third-party subscriptions are billed by the third party and must be canceled according to that provider’s instructions. Where terms conflict on purchase, billing, cancellation, refunds, or payment, the third party’s terms control. Read Hulu’s Subscriber Agreement.
- Paramount+ in the US: Its terms direct subscribers who pay through a third party, affiliate, or another service to that provider for cancellation or payment-method changes. Third-party bundle terms may differ in features, structure, price, and other conditions. Read Paramount+ US Terms of Use.
- discovery+: Its agreement says a third party may handle billing and that subscribers paying through one must follow that provider’s cancellation process. Read the discovery+ Terms of Use.
These examples are service-specific. Your country, plan, and billing route may affect which terms and consumer protections apply; the cited agreements do not establish one set of rules for every subscriber.
How to check what will happen to your account
- Read the official update and direct notices. Check the service’s current help or update page, plus any email or in-app message. Look for whether the change is immediate, scheduled, or still under discussion, and whether the notice says you need to act.
- Find who bills you and when your plan renews. Check the streaming account and, if necessary, the account for the app store, channel, bundle, or other provider that collects payment.
- Compare the proposed plan with your current one. Confirm whether access continues or transfers, whether the service or app changes, what happens to your price and features, and whether a new price starts now or at renewal.
- Check cancellation and refund instructions before acting. Use the billing provider’s process when it handles your subscription. Do not assume an ownership change automatically gives you a refund or the same cancellation options as other subscribers.
- Wait for transfer instructions before starting a replacement subscription. During the SHOWTIME transition, some accounts transferred automatically while others needed provider-specific instructions. The help center warned customers who were not eligible for transfer to cancel the old subscription before starting another to avoid overlapping charges.
- Keep a copy of the notice. Save the message and note your renewal date, the stated effective date, and any action you take.
How to evaluate a specific transition
Use these questions to compare what you have now with the terms in the notice. If the notice does not answer an item, contact the service or the company that bills you before making a change.
