Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPause before sending money. Guaranteed or unusually easy returns, pressure to act quickly, vague explanations, and requests to pay crypto to a stranger are serious warning signs. Verify the promoter and investment independently—because a polished website, glowing testimonials, or a balance shown on a platform can all be fabricated.
What are the clearest warning signs?
- Guaranteed, quick, or low-risk profits: No endorsement, testimonial, or displayed account balance makes a promised return reliable. Treat claims of easy gains as a reason to stop and check, not as proof of an opportunity. The Federal Trade Commission’s crypto scam guidance and its investment scam guidance warn about these claims.
- Urgency or secrecy: A limited-time offer, pressure to deposit immediately, or discouragement from doing your own research can be a tactic to prevent scrutiny.
- Vague answers: Be wary if the promoter cannot explain in writing how the investment works, who controls the funds, and where your money will go.
- Crypto sent to someone else: A request to transfer crypto to a stranger or an account controlled by a supposed investment manager is a major warning. Crypto transfers are often difficult to reverse.
- Extra payments to withdraw: A platform that blocks withdrawals or demands a fee to release supposed profits may be part of the scam. Do not send more money to try to recover funds.
In 2026, the FTC reported more than $7.9 billion in investment-scam losses in 2025, with a median individual loss above $10,000. These figures cover investment scams overall, not crypto scams alone. In 2024, the FTC reported $4.6 billion in investment-scam losses for 2023, also across investment scams generally; the figures reflect different reporting years and should not be read as crypto-only totals. FTC investment scam guidance provides the context.
How do crypto investment scams typically work?
A scam may begin with an unsolicited message, call, email, social-media post, or contact on a dating app. The person may pose as an investment expert or offer to teach you how to invest. They may direct you to buy crypto and transfer it to an account on a convincing-looking but fake platform. The platform can display fabricated gains to encourage further deposits. When you try to withdraw, it may block access or demand more money.
Watch for trust-based approaches
A new online contact, a member of a community group, or even a friend’s compromised account can be used to build trust before an investment pitch. The FTC’s advice is direct: “Never mix online dating and investment advice.” The warning appears in its consumer guidance on cryptocurrency and scams.

Recognize impersonation and giveaway pitches
Scammers may impersonate a celebrity or promote a giveaway that claims to multiply your cryptocurrency. A token or coin may also be pushed with unsupported claims. A legitimate-looking site, testimonial, or displayed account balance is not independent evidence; each can be faked.
How to check an offer before investing
- Pause and record the details. Write down the promoter’s name, company, cryptocurrency or token, and specific claims. Do not transfer crypto while someone is pressuring you to act.
- Search independently. Search the promoter, company, and cryptocurrency with terms such as “review,” “scam,” and “complaint.” Read multiple results rather than relying on links or references supplied by the promoter. The FTC recommends this kind of independent checking in its crypto scam guidance and investment scam guidance.
- Ask for a written explanation. Request clear details on how the investment works, who holds or controls the funds, and where your money will go. Do not treat evasive answers or verbal assurances as verification.
- Check registration or licensing where applicable. Requirements depend on the investment and applicable law. A relevant registration check can be one part of your review; registration does not guarantee returns, and a missing result by itself does not prove that a particular offer is fraudulent.
- Get an outside perspective. Discuss the proposal with someone you trust who is not involved in selling it. If the offer cannot withstand a pause and independent questions, do not proceed.
What if you already sent crypto or suspect a scam?
Stop communicating with the suspected promoter and do not send more crypto, including money described as a tax, release fee, or recovery payment. Do not trust someone who contacts you claiming they can retrieve your funds for a fee; the FTC’s guidance does not promise recovery, and reporting a scam does not guarantee that money will be returned.

For U.S. readers, the FTC identifies several possible reporting routes: ReportFraud.ftc.gov, the SEC, the CFTC, IC3, and the cryptocurrency exchange used to send the funds. Choose the relevant channels for your circumstances. These are U.S. routes, not universal reporting agencies; readers elsewhere should consult their local consumer-protection and financial regulators.
