Crypto investing can involve sharp price swings, significant loss, custody risks, and costs beyond a platform’s advertised trading fee. There is no universal percentage of a portfolio that is appropriate for crypto: the amount, if any, depends on your full financial plan, time horizon, risk tolerance, and ability to lose the speculative investment entirely.

How risky and volatile is crypto investing?

The SEC describes crypto asset securities as exceptionally risky and often volatile, with a significant risk of loss. It also describes bitcoin and ether as highly speculative, including when held through exchange-traded products (ETPs). These are not interchangeable categories: the SEC’s ETP guidance concerns exposure to bitcoin and ether through those investment products, while its crypto asset securities alert addresses crypto asset securities.

Before taking speculative risk, consider whether you could absorb a total loss without jeopardizing essential expenses or other financial goals. The SEC advises investors to risk only money they can afford to lose entirely in a speculative investment. See the SEC’s 2023 alert on crypto asset securities and its 2024 bulletin on bitcoin and ether ETPs.

How much of a portfolio should go to crypto?

The cited SEC materials do not set a standard allocation percentage, and the available evidence does not support a universal “safe” amount. Whether crypto belongs in a portfolio—and at what level—is a decision shaped by your complete financial situation, not a percentage that works for everyone.

Review these factors before deciding:

  • Financial plan and priorities: Consider whether speculative investing would interfere with near-term needs or important goals. The SEC recommends paying off high-interest credit-card debt before making speculative investments.
  • Time horizon: Think about when you may need the money and whether you could tolerate a substantial loss before then.
  • Risk tolerance and loss capacity: Your willingness to take risk is different from your financial ability to absorb a loss. Consider both, including the possibility of losing the entire amount invested.
  • Asset allocation and diversification: Consider how crypto would change the risks in your broader portfolio rather than judging it in isolation.

The SEC’s crypto asset securities alert discusses investment plans, time horizons, risk tolerance, asset allocation, diversification, and high-interest debt. It does not prescribe an allocation for individual investors.

What does crypto custody mean?

Custody is how and where you store and access crypto assets. A wallet is a device or program that lets you access crypto assets; it stores the private keys or passcodes used for access, not the assets themselves. Losing control of the relevant keys or recovery information can therefore affect your ability to access your holdings.

In its December 12, 2025 custody bulletin, the SEC distinguishes between self-custody, where you control the private keys, and third-party custody, where a provider controls access. Each approach assigns responsibilities and risks differently.

Self-custody or third-party custody?

Choice Who controls access? Key considerations
Self-custody You control the private keys. You are responsible for safeguarding keys and recovery information and for maintaining access to the assets.
Third-party custody A service provider controls access. You rely on the provider’s custody, security, policies, and continued operation. If the custodian is hacked, shuts down, or becomes bankrupt, customers may be unable to access assets.

Before choosing a custodian, ask how it safeguards assets and keys, whether it lends or commingles customer assets, what happens if it fails, what insurance does and does not cover, how privacy is protected, and what fees apply. For self-custody, consider whether you can reliably protect private keys and recovery phrases. The SEC’s custody bulletin covers these questions and the risks of both approaches.

What fees should you compare?

Costs depend on the provider, wallet, transaction, and investment structure; the SEC materials do not give current quotes or imply that every provider charges the same fees. Compare the full schedule rather than looking only at a trading fee.

  • Custody and account charges: Ask about annual asset-based fees, account setup and closure fees, and asset-transfer fees.
  • Transaction costs: Wallet transactions typically involve fees. Check the costs that apply when buying, selling, or moving assets.
  • Wallet costs: A physical device used for cold storage typically costs money, while a hot wallet may initially be free. Neither general statement establishes the price of a particular product.
  • ETP sponsor fees: Spot bitcoin and ether ETPs generally pay sponsor fees that direct holders do not pay. Check the relevant product’s documents for its actual costs.

These fee categories are described in the SEC’s 2025 custody bulletin and 2024 ETP bulletin. A self-custody device does not remove the responsibility to protect keys and recovery information, and a wallet’s initial price does not capture transaction costs.

Should you buy crypto directly or use a bitcoin or ether ETP?

A bitcoin or ether ETP can provide price exposure without some of the direct risks of transacting on a crypto trading platform or personally managing wallet keys. It is an investment product, not the same thing as holding crypto directly, and its sponsor fees and structure differ from direct ownership. Exposure remains speculative and subject to price volatility.

Consideration Direct crypto holdings Bitcoin or ether ETP
Access and custody You may need to use a crypto trading platform or manage wallet access and keys, depending on how you hold the assets. The ETP can avoid personally managing wallet keys; it provides exposure through an investment product.
Costs noted by the SEC Wallet transactions typically involve fees; custody providers may charge account, transfer, or annual fees. Spot bitcoin and ether ETPs generally pay sponsor fees that direct holders do not pay.
Investment risk Crypto holdings can be highly speculative and volatile. Bitcoin and ether ETP exposure remains highly speculative and subject to price volatility.

The SEC’s 2024 bulletin on ETPs providing exposure to bitcoin and ether explains the product-specific distinction. Compare the responsibilities and costs that apply to your chosen route; neither route is risk-free.
