Assam GST officials reportedly intercepted a goods-laden truck at Sagolia in Dhubri district as it entered from West Bengal, but the report available does not confirm that local residents alerted authorities. India Today NE reported on May 22, 2026, that the truck lacked an e-way bill and that officials were checking whether its cargo matched the invoice. No final tax liability, penalty or case outcome was reported.
What happened at Sagolia
India Today NE reported that Assam GST officials stopped the container truck at Sagolia, in Dhubri district, while it was entering Assam from West Bengal. Official entry records cited in the report showed a journey from Delhi toward Dimapur. The account does not establish that local residents flagged the vehicle, so that detail should not be treated as confirmed.
What the paperwork reportedly showed
According to the May 22 report, officials found no e-way bill. The transporters reportedly relied on an ordinary tax invoice dated May 3, 2026. The invoice listed the following goods and values:

What is known about the penalty and investigation
The report gave preliminary penalty estimates of ₹3.60 lakh to ₹7.20 lakh, linked to documentation violations. It said the final tax liability and penalty would be determined after full unloading and physical verification. Those estimates are not a final demand or adjudicated penalty; the report did not establish the vehicle’s eventual release, seizure, confirmed cargo quantity or final case outcome.
The investigation was described as active on May 22, 2026. That dated status does not establish whether it remains active or has since concluded.

How Assam GST interception procedure generally works
The Comptroller and Auditor General of India’s 2025 Assam state-revenue audit describes the general procedure under section 129(1) of the Assam GST Act: goods and the conveyance may be detained or seized when transported in contravention of the Act or rules, and released on payment of applicable tax and prescribed penalty. The audit outlines inspection reporting through Form GST MOV-04; release through MOV-05 if no discrepancy is found; and, where detention proceeds, an order and notice through MOV-06 and MOV-07, followed by a demand order through MOV-09.
This is general procedural context, not evidence that officials used each of those forms in the Dhubri case. The CAG audit says it scrutinized 320 booked cases from ten preventive units while reviewing vehicle-interception procedures; that is historical audit context, not a measure of this incident. Assam’s Commissionerate of Taxes lists the Assam GST Act and related state GST resources.
