You can reduce household water use without remodeling by first checking for leaks, then changing a few daily habits and replacing inefficient fixtures only when they need attention. Start with the water bill, visible plumbing and a toilet dye test; those checks can identify waste before you spend money on new equipment.
Start with leaks before buying anything
Leaks are a useful first priority because they waste water continuously and may be simple to fix. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that household leaks waste an average family 180 gallons per week, or 9,400 gallons per year. That is an average, not a forecast for every home; actual waste depends on the leak and how long it goes unnoticed. EPA WaterSense statistics
Look for visible signs and unusual bills
- Compare recent water bills and investigate an unexplained increase.
- Check faucets, toilets, exposed pipe connections, hose bibbs and irrigation equipment for drips, dampness or puddles.
- Look for pooling, overspray or persistently wet areas around outdoor watering equipment.
For a basic meter check, make sure no one is using water, note the meter reading, wait, and check it again. A changed reading suggests a possible leak. The EPA’s home-maintenance guidance describes this approach; avoid using water during the check so the result is meaningful.
Test a toilet for a silent leak
- Remove the toilet tank lid and add a few drops of food coloring or a dye tablet to the tank water.
- Wait 10 minutes without flushing. If colored water appears in the bowl, the toilet is leaking. Follow the dye product directions if they specify a different wait time.
- Flush after the test to clear the dye.
A worn rubber flapper is a common cause of toilet leaks, according to EPA WaterSense. If the test indicates a leak, identify a replacement compatible with your toilet model rather than assuming flappers are universal. EPA WaterSense Current

Cut everyday use without changing fixtures
Bathrooms account for more than half of indoor household water use, according to EPA WaterSense, so small bathroom habits are a practical place to begin. The EPA’s statistics page does not state a publication year for this figure.
Use less water at the sink and in the shower
- Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving.
- Keep showers brief rather than letting water run longer than needed.
These changes require no purchase, and the amount saved will vary with existing routines and household use. EPA WaterSense recommends both practices in its water-saving guidance.

Run appliances efficiently
- Run the dishwasher with a full load. Scrape food into the trash or compost rather than rinsing plates before loading.
- When washing dishes by hand, plug the sink or use a basin instead of letting water run continuously.
- Run full laundry loads where practical. Skip pre-wash or extra-rinse cycles unless they are needed, and use the detergent amount appropriate for the load to avoid additional rinsing.
These are EPA WaterSense recommendations; the guidance does not establish one gallons-saved figure that applies to every household. EPA home-maintenance guidance
Replace bathroom fixtures selectively
There is no need to replace a working fixture solely to save water. When a faucet aerator or showerhead needs replacement, look for the relevant WaterSense label and confirm the new part is compatible with the existing fixture.

Faucet aerators
A bathroom sink aerator is a small accessory, but threading and fit vary, so check your faucet and the product specifications before buying. EPA’s labeling criteria cited here apply to private lavatory and bar sink faucets, not every faucet type. EPA says replacing old, inefficient bathroom faucets and aerators with WaterSense-labeled models can save an average family $250 over the faucets’ lifetime; this is an EPA estimate, and the statistics page does not state its publication year. EPA WaterSense bathroom faucet guidance EPA WaterSense statistics
Showerheads
EPA says WaterSense-labeled showerheads are certified to save water and provide a satisfying spray. Its estimate for replacing showerheads is more than 2,700 gallons of water and $70 in water and electricity costs per average family per year. The actual savings depend on the showerhead being replaced and household use; the EPA statistics page does not state a publication year for the estimate. Adjust outdoor watering to your property
Outdoor water use averages more than 30 percent of total household water use and can reach 60 percent in arid regions, according to EPA WaterSense. That makes irrigation worth checking if your home has a watered landscape, but the share is not the same for every climate or household. The EPA statistics page does not state a publication year for these figures. EPA WaterSense statistics
Check the system and watering schedule
- Look for leaks, overspray and pooling around sprinklers or other irrigation equipment.
- Adjust watering to the landscape’s condition rather than following a fixed schedule regardless of need.
- Consider larger, less frequent watering to encourage deeper root growth, except where soils are predominantly clay.
- Follow local watering restrictions. Climate, soil, plant type and local rules determine an appropriate schedule.
If you already use automatic irrigation, a WaterSense-labeled controller may be an option. EPA estimates that replacing a clock-based controller with a labeled controller can reduce average-home irrigation water use by up to 30 percent and save up to 15,000 gallons annually. These are EPA estimates, not guaranteed results; the statistics page does not state a publication year. EPA WaterSense statistics

Check for local assistance before paying full price
Your water utility may offer retrofit kits, incentives, water audits or local watering advice. Availability and eligibility depend on the utility and location, so check directly before counting on a rebate or assuming a program is open to you. EPA describes these as approaches utilities may use; it does not establish that a particular household qualifies. EPA guidance on using water efficiently
