To find a household water leak, first check your bill and water meter, then test toilets and inspect visible fixtures and connections. Fix only a leak with a clear, simple cause; if water keeps moving, the source is hidden, or damage is occurring, contact a qualified plumber.
Start with your water bill and meter
Look for an unusual increase
Compare your latest bill with the same month in the previous year, allowing for changes in household size, weather, or water use. The EPA notes that winter use above 12,000 gallons per month for a family of four may indicate a serious leak. That is a screening clue, not a universal cutoff: household use and local conditions vary. EPA WaterSense’s home-maintenance guidance also recommends checking for unexplained bill increases.
Run a two-hour meter check
- Turn off faucets and make sure water-using appliances are not running. Avoid using water during the test.
- Record the water meter reading. If your meter has a leak indicator, note whether it is moving.
- Wait two hours without using water, then read the meter again.
- If the reading changed, water is probably flowing somewhere in the system. The test does not identify the source, so continue with the checks below.
This meter-check method is recommended by EPA WaterSense. A changed reading can reflect a leak, but the meter alone cannot tell whether it is in a toilet, fixture, appliance connection, irrigation line, or concealed pipe.
Test toilets for silent leaks
Use food coloring or a dye tablet
- Remove the toilet tank lid and add a few drops of food coloring or a dye tablet to the tank water.
- Wait about 10 minutes without flushing.
- Check the bowl. If colored water appears, the toilet is leaking from the tank into the bowl.
- Flush after the test to clear the dye and reduce the risk of staining.
A worn flapper or flush-valve seal is a common cause of a positive dye test. Check that any replacement flapper fits your toilet model. A faulty fill valve or another toilet component can also be responsible, so replacing the flapper is not guaranteed to solve every leak. EPA describes the test and common toilet causes in its leak-check guidance and 2026 leak-detection guide.

A running toilet can waste substantial water. The EPA’s 2026 guide gives an example of a stuck toilet fill valve left unaddressed wasting 4,300 gallons per day and costing up to $1,400 per month. Those figures describe that specific example, not every toilet leak; actual waste and cost depend on the fault and local water rates.

- Faucet spouts, handles, and gaskets
- Showerheads and their connections
- Visible pipes and fittings under sinks
- Toilet bases and tank connections
- Hose bibs and outdoor faucets
- Appliance connections, including those for washing machines and dishwashers
- Water heaters and nearby pipe joints
- Outdoor irrigation equipment and lines
Visible moisture may show where water is escaping, but water can travel along a pipe or surface before becoming noticeable. For outdoor systems, check whether irrigation is running when it should be off and look for persistently wet areas. The EPA lists fixtures, fittings, appliances, and irrigation among the places to inspect in its Fix a Leak Week guidance.
Choose a repair that matches the cause
Toilet leak
If the dye test is positive, inspect the flapper or flush-valve seal and confirm the replacement part is compatible with the toilet. If the parts look sound or the toilet still runs after replacement, the fill valve or another component may need attention. A plumber can diagnose faults you cannot identify confidently.

Dripping faucet or showerhead
EPA says some dripping faucets and showerheads can often be addressed with a wrench or pipe tape, depending on where the leak is coming from. Tape is not a universal fix for a leaking pipe or a failed internal faucet component. If the source is unclear, the drip persists, or the fitting is damaged, stop and get professional help rather than tightening parts blindly. See EPA’s repair guidance.
When replacement makes more sense
If a fixture needs replacement rather than repair, EPA recommends looking for WaterSense-labeled toilets, faucets, or showerheads. The label relates to water efficiency and performance criteria; it does not mean a fixture is leak-proof or diagnose an existing leak. EPA explains the label in its consumer guidance.

Concealed, persistent, or damaging leak
If the meter changes but you cannot find a visible source, water is continuing to escape, or you see damage, contact a qualified plumbing professional. Pipe materials, fixture designs, and shutoff arrangements differ between homes, so there is no single safe repair procedure for every concealed leak.

Manual checks can identify many leaks without installed equipment. Devices are optional and serve different purposes: a moisture sensor detects water at the spot where it is placed, while a flow monitor watches water-use patterns for unusual consumption. EPA’s 2026 guide to leak-detection and flow-monitoring devices describes these categories but does not endorse a specific model.

| Option | What it detects | Coverage and installation | Useful limits to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual meter check | Water movement while household use is paused | Uses the home’s water meter; no additional device installation | Indicates probable flow but does not locate the leak |
| Toilet dye test | Water leaking from a toilet tank into the bowl | Tests one toilet at a time; uses food coloring or a dye tablet | Does not check other fixtures or concealed plumbing |
| Moisture sensor | Water reaching the monitored spot | Placed near a fixture or other area of concern; installation can be DIY or professional | May not detect a leak that does not reach the sensor |
| Flow monitor | Unusual water-consumption patterns | May monitor a point of use or the main line; installation ranges from DIY to professional | Can help narrow down unusual use but does not guarantee that every leak will be located |
Before choosing an installed device, consider the area you want covered, whether it needs access to the main line, installation requirements, available alerts, whether automatic shutoff is offered, and any ongoing maintenance. Confirm those features for the particular device: EPA’s guide describes device categories, not guaranteed capabilities for every model.
Put the potential waste in context
Undetected household leaks can waste thousands of gallons a year, according to EPA WaterSense; the actual amount depends on the leak. Specific examples illustrate why it is worth investigating: EPA’s 2026 guide cites an estimated $5,700 per year for a drip-irrigation malfunction leaking at one gallon per minute. Separately, Penn State Extension estimates that a faucet dripping once per second wastes about 10 gallons in a day. These are distinct examples with different causes and should not be treated as a universal estimate for every leak.
